"Whizz-"
The arrow streaked through the air and struck a Soft Bone Rabbit squarely in the neck. Its legs kicked twice before it went still. Three experience orbs popped out, and a white soul ring began forming above its corpse.
A child of about seven emerged from behind the bushes. As he approached, he absorbed the experience orbs, and his soul power level finally rose from level nine to level ten.
"I didn't expect it to actually be ten years old."
Li Chen looked at the ten-year soul ring before him and immediately summoned his martial soul: an orange metal block.
Veteran Minecraft players might have recognized it. That was right-his martial soul was a Command Block.
As a transmigrator, Li Chen had awakened his system before transmigrating. It let him spin a wheel to determine which world he would enter and freely choose one game, anime, manga, or similar work as his cheat after transmigration.
The options were sorted according to what he had most recently played and watched.
When he saw that loading Minecraft would give him a Command Block martial soul, he selected it without even reading the rest.
The good news was that he had twin martial souls: the Command Block and the Book of Knowledge.
The better news was that the Command Block's soul rings provided no soul skills and were unaffected by their age. Instead, each ring always allowed him to enter one command as a soul skill.
The Book of Knowledge worked similarly, though it was affected by soul ring age. Aside from its basic ability to unlock crafting recipes, he currently had no idea whether it had any other abilities.
The bad news was that he had zero innate soul power, because Steve started at level zero.
The worse news was that, before obtaining soul rings, the Command Block and the Book of Knowledge were probably only good for bashing people.
Fortunately, he also had Minecraft power. Killing monsters—soul beasts—smelting, mining, fishing, and breeding all earned him Experience Points. As long as he had enough Experience Points, he could level up.
After spending a year on it, he had finally caught up to the starting line of those geniuses with innate full soul power. In any case, the Command Block was unaffected by soul ring age.
He immediately sat cross-legged. The white soul ring floated above his head and slowly descended.
Since it was merely a ten-year soul ring, he felt no pressure whatsoever. He finished absorbing it in just fifteen minutes, reaching level eleven.
[Congratulations! The player's level has passed level 10! You may add 1 more MOD.]
Li Chen could not be bothered with the system right now. He had something more important to do: place the Command Block on the ground.
He clicked it again, and an input field finally appeared. Without hesitation, he quickly entered the command: /gamemode1@s
He had only meant to give it a try. He had never expected it to actually work. Didn't that make him invincible?
He retrieved the Command Block and activated his soul skill to switch to Creative Mode. Although he could fly directly, he still jumped twice on the spot for the sake of ceremony.
Next, he tried opening his inventory. Every vanilla item was inside. Just as he took out a stack of villager spawn eggs, something happened.
He suddenly felt all his soul power drain away and fell out of the air. Fortunately, he had not flown very high, and there was grass beneath him, so he was not seriously hurt.
"I knew it."
He did not find it too hard to accept that he could not maintain Creative Mode indefinitely. After all, he had expected restrictions. They merely limited him to using it once a day and capped the number of times he could take items.
He had taken the villager spawn eggs because he wanted to see what these creatures would be like when summoned. After all, the system had only loaded Minecraft's content for him and adapted it to this world.
Li Chen used a villager spawn egg on the ground, and a villager in brown clothing appeared. Rather than the blocky figure from the game, he looked like a young adult man.
The villager looked bewildered for a moment. Upon seeing Li Chen, he immediately dropped to his knees, pressing his forehead against the grass. His entire body trembled, yet he said nothing.
The villager's sudden kneeling left Li Chen baffled. He scratched his head, looked at the man in brown cloth clothes before him, and could not help asking, "What are you doing?"
The villager raised his head, his eyes filled with reverence and his voice trembling. "Lord Creator God, you awakened me from the void and bestowed life and intelligence upon me. You are my god!"
The corner of Li Chen's mouth twitched. So he even had a Creator God role built in? And judging by the look of things, the villager's loyalty was maxed out. He could certainly put him to work.
But if these villagers were intelligent, it seemed he could not build such villager-friendly contraptions as iron farms, villager trading halls, and discount machines.
Still, with Creative Mode, there probably was no need to build them anyway.
"What's your name?"
"Your servant has no name. Please grant me one, Lord Creator God."
Li Chen thought for a moment, unwilling to spend much effort on it. "You're wearing brown clothes, so I'll call you Brown Robe."
Despite such a perfunctory name, tears actually welled in Brown Robe's eyes. He kowtowed heavily once more. "Thank you for granting me a name, Lord Creator God. Brown Robe is willing to serve you for all eternity."
"All right, all right. Get up first." Li Chen waved a hand. As a modern person, he was not used to people constantly kneeling before him like this.
Only then did Brown Robe cautiously rise, standing to one side with his hands lowered, his bearing respectful to the utmost.
"What abilities do you have?" Li Chen asked directly.
Brown Robe paused, seemingly trying to understand the meaning of "abilities," then answered honestly, "Your servant can farm, trade, build houses... and run."
Li Chen nodded. Those were all basic villager abilities. He then asked, "Oh, right. Do you have a martial soul?"
"My lord, your servant cannot awaken a martial soul. You must bestow one upon me personally."
Was this like giving a villager a job site block to change his profession? Or could items other than job site blocks also become martial souls?
"How do I bestow a martial soul upon you?"
"My lord, once you give your servant a profession through a job site block, your servant will obtain the corresponding martial soul. Furthermore, the first item you give your servant will become his second martial soul."
Li Chen's eyes lit up at that. Didn't that mean everyone could have twin martial souls? He looked at the remaining villager spawn eggs in his hand and immediately gave them to Brown Robe.
The transformation into a martial soul would take some time. He took the opportunity to open his system's status panel for the first time in a while.
[Unique Player System of All Heavens] [Player]: Li Chen [Level]: Level 11 (innate soul power: level 0) [Martial souls]: Command Block, Book of Knowledge [Loaded content]: Minecraft [Minecraft]: Unlocks certain features and all blocks, items, crafting recipes, and commands; all content will automatically adapt to the world; the player may load 1 additional MOD upon reaching levels 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 (currently available: 1 MOD)
Aside from this interface, the system had no other functions whatsoever. He did not even know how to load more content. He had to figure everything out himself.
It really was just like Minecraft. There wasn't even a tutorial.
"Forget it. Let's see what I can add with a MOD first."
