After exchanging a shocked glance, Du Le and I hurriedly sat up straight and each opened a book as though nothing had happened.
We just quietly pricked up our ears.
"There's no need to make it sound so ugly. We all sleep with men. The only difference is that you don't charge, and I do." A woman's voice drifted over, making no attempt to hide it.
Judging by her voice, she seemed to be Cai Wen, the girl everyone considered a goddess.
Du Le had mentioned before that Cai Wen's family seemed rich. She was driven to and from class.
She had a sugar daddy?!
Du Le and I kept our necks rigid, not daring to turn around. We glanced sideways, communicating our shock through the corners of our eyes.
"Uh..." Her friend seemed at a loss for words.
Cai Wen laid out her reasoning. "Tell me, why put yourself through that? You get a boyfriend and let him sleep with you for free. Doesn't that make you even cheaper than a prostitute? At least they have a price, while you aren't worth a cent!
"Give it some more thought. If you come around, you can find me. I'll ask my boyfriend to introduce you to a businessman. You'll get at least S$3,000 a month, and you'll only have to go keep him company occasionally, when he needs you."
The other girl said nothing. Perhaps she was thinking it over, or perhaps she was hesitating.
Cai Wen pressed her point. "Our visas don't let us work legally anyway. It's just getting a boyfriend. Why turn down free money?"
In her view, this probably really was no big deal, so she spoke with complete confidence and no restraint.
Not only had Du Le and I heard her, but everyone sitting nearby probably had too.
Everyone except Bai Zhigao, who was still delivering his impassioned speech.
And it was a good thing he hadn't heard.
If Bai Zhigao had heard such an earth-shattering statement, he would definitely have gotten so excited that his voice cracked again.
Jin Ling'er asked Cai Wen curiously, "Is it really just getting a boyfriend? You wouldn't be coming between a married couple, would you?"
Jin Ling'er was incredibly innocent. Tall and slim at five foot nine, she had thick eyebrows, large eyes, a delicate little nose, and not a scheming bone in her body.
She also came from a small county town and hadn't seen much of the world. She was no stranger to hard work, and she was currently working part-time while attending school.
She probably felt that, if you were getting a boyfriend either way, having a guy willing to spend money on you really was a good thing for a girl.
Cai Wen explained carefully, "That depends on what kind you're looking for. Some have never married, some are separated but not divorced yet, and some are widowers who are single."
Even though Du Le and I had heard everything, as two grown men, we felt too awkward to butt into the girls' conversation about this sort of thing.
All we could do was keep our necks stiff and sit motionless, pretending to be terracotta warriors.
Fortunately, class started soon afterward, and only then did we breathe a sigh of relief and relax.
After class, Jin Ling'er went over to Cai Wen again to talk about finding a boyfriend.
Bai Zhigao knew nothing about the earlier conversation. The moment he heard Jin Ling'er mention finding a boyfriend, he excitedly cut in. "You silly fool, do you have any idea how much dating costs?
"Love is a luxury. We can barely afford to eat, so what do you need a boyfriend for?"
Du Le and I both tensed at that. I hurriedly made up an excuse to change the subject. "Hey, Zhigao, Du Le just said he didn't understand that point the teacher explained last class. Why don't we find somewhere to talk it over?"
"Exactly, exactly!" For once, that blockhead Du Le managed to think on his feet.
Before Cai Wen and Jin Ling'er could react, we hurriedly pushed Bai Zhigao away.
As we headed out, Du Le kept looking back reluctantly.
His eyes were practically overflowing with regret.
Actually, even without Bai Zhigao, Du Le and I would have had to leave.
Class was already over, and everyone else was getting up and leaving one after another. If we kept sitting there like idiots, we'd only make it painfully obvious that we were eavesdropping.
I put an arm around Du Le's shoulders and reassured him, "We can just ask Jin Ling'er next time we get the chance."
"Ask her what? About finding a boyfriend?" Bai Zhigao looked puzzled.
"Yes, yes, yes. We'll tell her not to let dating distract her. Only by studying hard and making progress every day can we live up to the expectations our country and its people have of us," I bluffed.
"That's more like it. You've shown quite an admirable attitude today." Bai Zhigao nodded approvingly.
"Uh... I just remembered, I still have to take Li Xuan home. You two can discuss it. I'll head off first." I made an excuse and slipped away.
"Oh, I just remembered I have work too. It's almost time. Let's talk another day." Du Le also made an excuse and escaped.
Even after I'd gone a fair distance, when I looked back, I could still see Bai Zhigao standing there in a daze, unable to figure out what had happened.
