An ominous ghostly aura hung over the place.
Even just standing there, he could feel wave after wave of foreboding.
Images seemed to rise in his mind of how, nearly a hundred years ago, the husband she had once loved so deeply had dismembered her here, cut by cut, and buried her...
And just then...
The faint, clear ringing of a bell seemed to drift from the street corner. In the eerie darkness, its clarity sent chills down their spines.
Lin Ying's body tensed almost instantly.
Creak-creak-
From within the gray mist came the grating sound of an old wooden-wheeled cart.
Under Lin Ying's nervous gaze, a hunched, white-haired old woman emerged from the rolling gray mist, dragging a cart toward them with slow, shuffling steps. A coffin rested on the cart behind her, and she held a rusty bell in her withered hand. That was where the ringing came from.
The sudden appearance of an old woman in a place steeped in such an eerie ghostly aura was utterly incongruous.
"Is she... a ghost?" Lin Ying asked nervously.
Lynn adjusted his Monocle, looked at the old woman, and said:
"Human."
The gray mist billowed.
As though she hadn't seen them at all, the old woman dragged the coffin over to the courtyard gate ahead and stopped, her back hunched. She reached out with her withered hand and began burning stack after stack of Ghost Money she had brought. The clear ringing of the bell grew ever more chilling.
"Old man, she's back... No matter how many years have passed, the debt we owe from back then must still be repaid..."
Her face was gaunt, her voice aged. The Ghost Money slowly burned to ashes in her hands.
Lynn glanced at Lin Ying and the two Night Doctors beside him.
