Night fell.
On a muddy path, an off-road vehicle slowly stopped outside the village, and Yin Qin and Bai Yi got out.
By the time they reached this place, they had already passed beyond the military's outer cordon and entered the heart of the area. Apart from specialists like them, all unrelated personnel were forbidden from approaching after nightfall unless specifically ordered otherwise.
There had already been casualties because of this a few days earlier.

Yin Qin picked up her briefcase and turned for one last look at the setting sun before raising her gaze toward the village.
Beneath the silent night sky, the entire village was eerily quiet, like an enormous, soundless tomb.
In fact, shortly after discovering traces of the Flesh God Cult's activities, the military had evacuated all the villagers and made proper arrangements for them. That meant there were no living people in the village now apart from the two of them and the members of the Supernatural General Administration waiting to receive them.
Bai Yi gripped his sword hilt tightly, surveying their surroundings with an uneasy gaze. He said:
"Yin Qin, there... there shouldn't be any evil spirits or anything showing up here just yet, right? I've seen them before, but... but..."
With her head raised, Yin Qin strode down the path and said:
"Don't be afraid. As long as you don't disturb them, most souls won't actually do anything to you. In many cases, they still believe they're alive, so they keep repeating the things they did before they died."
"So if you do see them, don't be frightened. Just treat them like ordinary people. Of course..."
She turned and glanced at Bai Yi's shoulder.
"Except for vengeful spirits."
