Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Class-D Personnel 1 |
| Alias(es) | D-class personnel; Class-D; D级人员 (original designation) 1 2 |
| Affiliation | Anomaly Containment Facility 1 |
| Occupation/Role | Expendable human subjects used in anomalous experiments 1 2 |
| Recruitment | Primarily death-row inmates; additional personnel recruited from people with relatively minor crimes when shortages occur 2 9 |
| Identification | Numerical D-prefixed designations, such as Zhou Ze’s D-87465 2 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1, “D-class personnel” 1 |
Recruitment and Classification
Class-D personnel are mostly recruited from death-row inmates worldwide. This is not an absolute requirement: Wang Lei explains that personnel shortages trigger a temporary recruitment protocol drawing from people whose crimes are relatively minor 2 9.
Zhou Ze’s file illustrates the uncertainty surrounding this process. According to the file, this world’s Zhou Ze killed a burglar who attacked his younger sister and signed an agreement to become Class-D before a verdict was delivered. Zhou Ze suspects irregularities but also questions whether the file accurately describes what happened 9.
- Administrative identity: Staff routinely address Class-D subjects by their numbers rather than their names 1 2 38.
- Institutional position: Although Zhou Ze describes himself as technically an employee, Wang Lei acknowledges that Class-D personnel have no freedom or dignity within the Facility 9.
- Transfers: Personnel can be transported between sites in armored vehicles and pooled to meet experimental staffing shortages 37 38.
- Leaving the classification: Lu Fei states that the only way to escape Class-D status is to prove one’s worth and ability and join the Facility in another capacity. He presents survival as the prerequisite, not release as a reward automatically earned through participation 16.
Experimental Duties
Class-D personnel serve as experimental subjects rather than laboratory technicians. Their nominal “volunteering” can involve being forced into containment chambers at gunpoint 1 2.
Documented Assignments
| Anomaly / Project | Class-D task | Risk or outcome |
|---|---|---|
| E-695 — Death Painting | Participation in earlier experiments; the specific procedure is not described | Dai Yong’an reports a zero survival rate before D-87465 survived by encountering a periodic dormant phase 36. |
| E-566 — Game Box | Obey color-based movement rules: move in red light, remain still in blue light, and avoid green light | Zhou Ze survives escalating light screens; a burly participant is killed by green beams 2 4. |
| SCP-239 — Witch Child / Alice | Pose as a wizard’s apprentice, interact with Alice, and later teach her about good and evil | D-87465 is chosen for emotional stability and controllability; breaches of the interaction rules carry a threat of execution 17 18 31. |
| Number-075 | Collect the subject’s secretions in containers | The anomaly bursts from a safe and kills one of the three Class-D participants 39. |
Selection and Psychological Assessment
- Psychological state can be an experimental variable. Dai Yong’an deliberately selects a mentally unstable Class-D participant for the Game Box experiment to provoke new developments 4.
- Counseling also supports research. Wang Lei counsels personnel and assesses their psychological condition; Dai Yong’an separately requests objective assessments of D-87465 from Lu Fei 9 11.
- Stable subjects are unusual. Wang Lei describes extreme fear and anxiety, or numbness and despair, as common among the Class-D personnel she has met 9.
- Assignments can require unusual resilience. D-87465’s clear thinking and emotional stability under pressure make him a preferred candidate for contact with SCP-239 15 17.
Living Conditions
Housing, Food, and Recreation
- Cells: Zhou Ze’s initial room is windowless and smaller than twenty square meters, with a hard bed, wooden table, plastic stool, and partitioned washroom 1.
- Meals: Food is ordinarily unremarkable, but meals before and after experimental work are more lavish. Zhou Ze calls these “last suppers,” noting that not everyone survives to eat the second 1.
- Yard time: At Site-17, ordinary Class-D personnel receive recreation access every other day in an enclosed, heavily monitored area 11.
- Exercise equipment: The yard contains fixed frames, pull-up bars, and sit-up benches, but no dumbbells or barbells that could be used as weapons 11.
- Inmate bullying: Guards generally ignore intimidation and minor conflicts unless they develop into actual fights 12.
Security and Discipline
- Armed supervision: Guards escort personnel through the Facility; Zhou Ze is also handcuffed when taken for interrogation 2 8.
- Execution threats: Lu Fei warns Class-D subjects that disobeying orders can result in immediate execution 2.
- Actual lethal enforcement: Three Class-D men are shot dead following a yard confrontation, despite Zhou Ze having struck first and the men not retaliating 13.
- Exposure during emergencies: During an anomalous corridor incident, a guard makes Zhou Ze scout ahead while keeping his own distance 22.
- Memory erasure: After Zhou Ze survives a containment breach, an authority orders combat personnel to administer Class-A Amnestics 6.
Regulations and Exceptions
Temporary Recruitment Protocol 7-B
Under Temporary Recruitment Protocol 7-B, Class-D personnel obtained through nonstandard channels should, in principle, not participate in high-risk experiments rated Dangerous or above. Dr. Gears confronts Dai Yong’an over violating this restriction twice in D-87465’s case 36.
Gears invokes the Ethics Committee’s role in balancing the Facility’s mission against limits on inhumane conduct. Dai Yong’an responds by proposing an Anomalous Interaction Experiment on the grounds that D-87465 may himself be a potential threat entity; Gears then requires a new application report 36.
Special Treatment of D-87465
| Exception | Terms |
|---|---|
| Special training | Lu Fei arranges five days of physical conditioning and basic instruction in place of ordinary duties. Shi Yaming calls such training for Class-D personnel practically unheard of 14 16. |
| Special observation status | Zhou Ze retains his Class-D classification but receives access to the Level 1 staff cafeteria and two hours of recreation-room use daily 30. |
| Mandatory escort | At least one security officer must accompany him whenever he leaves his room 30. |
| Revocable privileges | Violations can lead to immediate loss of privileges and additional punishment 30. |
Known Personnel
| Individual | Designation | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Zhou Ze | D-87465 | Repeatedly survives dangerous experiments and breaches; later receives special-observation privileges while remaining Class-D 2 30 36. |
| Liu Xin | Not stated | Says he was imprisoned after a woman accused him of rape. Hopes to survive and leave early, and volunteers to follow Zhou Ze into the same project 37 38. |
| Gaunt yard inmate | Not stated | Has been at the Facility only a few days and identifies drugs and dealing as the reasons for his imprisonment 11. |
| Burly Game Box participant | Not stated | Attacks E-566 with a rib and is killed during the resulting escalation 4. |
| Number-075 participant | Not stated | Claims unusually sharp intuition and predicts their deaths before being killed by the anomaly 39. |
Appearance
- Standard clothing: Orange prison uniforms, also described as orange-red 2 31 37.
- Limited protection: Zhou Ze’s thin Class-D uniform is easily shredded by a giant hound’s claws 47.
- Recognizable classification: Other Facility personnel keep their distance when they see Zhou Ze’s orange uniform and armed escort 8.
