Wei Zelin was born to Wei Ming and his first wife, Qi Ling, three years before Wei Zexuan. Wei Ming abandoned them to marry Wei Wanwan, whose family possessed considerable wealth and influence. Although both families happened to share the surname Wei, Wei Ming married into Wei Wanwan’s family 1.

His maternal grandparents were teachers who condemned Qi Ling’s attachment to her former husband and treated Wei Zelin as a reminder of his father’s betrayal.
