Even so, Feng Wanting remained composed, his calm expression betraying nothing of his emotions. A jumble of footsteps came from the corridor, growing clearer like a summons to his doom. Then someone knocked on the door.
Leaning against the desk, Feng Wanting unhurriedly adjusted the silver buttons on his cuffs. The finely tailored shoulders of his suit caught a cold sheen in the morning light. As though he had not heard the knocking, he suddenly looked up and asked softly, "Can I kiss you?"
Those words pierced Pei Yang's taut nerves like a length of searing wire. With his eyes brimming, he abruptly grabbed Feng Wanting by the collar and kissed him.
Feng Wanting cupped the back of Pei Yang's neck, and the touch of his fingertips made Pei Yang's eyes sting even more.
The knocking outside came one blow after another, turning from tentative to urgent. Amid it all, Pei Yang and Feng Wanting kissed each other, only slowly drawing apart when they had had their fill.
"You never used to ask my permission." Nestled against Feng Wanting's neck, Pei Yang could distinctly feel the vibrations in his chest.
"I was afraid... this might be the last time." An indescribable hoarseness threaded Feng Wanting's low voice. "So I wanted to treat it seriously."
"The last time? You're going to cooperate with an investigation, not face execution." Pei Yang wanted to say more, but, receiving no response, the person knocking outside issued a warning. "Mr. Feng, we are here to investigate the funds for your group's charity projects last year. Please cooperate."
"A year is too long. If you can't wait for me..."
