Feng Chuxun's voice was so loud that quite a few people nearby turned to look at them.
Pei Yang stared blankly at the tiny, tiny little bean beneath him and raised his arms helplessly. "I'm not..."
"Feng Xile." Feng Wanting was still standing in the same spot, his expression somewhat dark as he called, "Come here."
Pei Yang grew slightly wary. This child's surname was Feng.
Feng Chuxun pouted. Not only did he refuse to go over, he tilted his head up and took Pei Yang's hand. Spotting a few kindergarten classmates, he yelled with every ounce of strength he had, "Everyone, come look-come over here! I, Feng Chuxun, have a big announcement!"
Feng Chuxun was a born leader. With a wave of his little hand and a shout in his little voice, he soon drew a crowd of children from across the exhibition hall. "Isn't that Feng Chuxun? What's he doing?"
"Who's that he's holding hands with? Another nanny?"
"Hmph, this nanny's pretty enough. So what! No matter how rich his family is, he's still an orphan."
Everyone talked over one another, the crowd bubbling like a pot of boiling water. Pei Yang looked utterly bewildered. Once surrounded, he wanted to pull free of that warm little hand, but after hesitating for ages, he still couldn't bring himself to do it.
"H-hey, little guy," Pei Yang asked softly. "What are you trying to do?"
Feng Chuxun lifted his flushed little face and declared proudly, "I'm not an orphan! I found my mom!"
With that, he pulled Pei Yang along and pushed through the crowd to find Feng Wanting, who still hadn't caught up with what was happening.
"Huh?" Confused and at a loss, Pei Yang let the child lead him forward. Holding up his skirt with one hand, he had no time to worry about the silver bells on his head as he was dragged, jingling and jangling, in front of Feng Wanting.
"..."
Oh, for the love of- Pei Yang hurriedly covered half his face with his other sleeve.
Please let Feng Wanting understand that this is for work, not some personal fetish...
Feng Chuxun stood between them like a little charging adapter. He took Feng Wanting's hand with his free one, linking the two men together, and said gleefully, "Everyone, look closely!"
Feng Chuxun proudly shook Feng Wanting's arm. "This is my dad! His name is Feng Wanting."
-Dad?!
Pei Yang glanced at Feng Wanting in surprise. Feng Wanting immediately met his eyes, and Pei Yang guiltily lowered his gaze again, keeping his sleeve over his face.
From Feng Wanting's angle, it was only a hazy layer of gauze. He could still see Pei Yang's profile, so beautiful it hardly seemed of this world.
"Feng Chuxun really has a dad?"
"His mysterious dad finally decided to show up?"
"Then, Feng Chuxun, where's your mom?" one child asked.
Feng Chuxun grew even more excited and shook his other hand. "He's my mom!"
Pei Yang: "?"
This kid is out of control. How can he just claim random people as family?
"I-I'm not..." Pei Yang was just about to explain himself when Feng Chuxun blinked his sparkling eyes and asked, "Mom, what's your name?"
"I..." Pei Yang's voice caught in his throat. He didn't know whether to answer.
Answering would feel like admitting he was this child's mom. But if he didn't...
Pei Yang lowered his head. The child was still staring up at him with those clear eyes full of expectation.
Left with no choice, he settled on a compromise. Turning his face aside, he held up the staff badge hanging around his neck for Feng Chuxun to see.
Feng Chuxun was still in kindergarten and barely knew any characters to begin with. The two characters in "Pei Yang" had so many strokes that he opened his mouth but couldn't read them. He could only turn to his father for help. "Feng Wanting, what does this say?"
Without even looking, Feng Wanting said evenly, "Pei Yang."
"...!"
The way Feng Wanting said those two words sounded exactly like the way he said "Feel good?" in bed. Goosebumps instantly rose all over Pei Yang, as though an electric current had passed through him.
Now that Feng Chuxun knew, he introduced him again. "He's my mom! Pei Yang!"
The children's shrill laughter burst out all around him, stabbing at his eardrums. Pei Yang wanted to find a hole and crawl into it.
"Chuxun, your mom's really pretty."
"Like a fairy from heaven!"
At the praise, Feng Chuxun immediately let go of Feng Wanting and stretched out his little arms to hug Pei Yang. "Of course. My mom is the prettiest in the whole world."
"Feng Xile." Once the crowd had thinned a little, Feng Wanting slowly crouched down on one knee and firmly turned Feng Chuxun to face him. "He isn't your mom."
Feng Chuxun's wide grin vanished at once. His thick lashes fluttered twice before he flung off the hand Feng Wanting had placed on his arm and ran behind Pei Yang. "You're lying! You're a liar! He is my mom! I saw him come out of your room with my own eyes! And you weren't wearing any clothes!"
Feng Wanting: "..."
Pei Yang: "...?" Oh no. There's no explaining this now.
The adults nearby hurriedly covered their children's ears and shot Feng Wanting faintly disdainful looks. "...Good grief, what kind of parent is that? He doesn't even keep the kid away when he's doing that?"
Feng Wanting looked somewhat resigned, but his voice remained gentle. "Didn't I tell you that your mom is a woman?"
Feng Chuxun confidently grabbed the braid draped over Pei Yang's shoulder and shook it, sending the silver bells jangling. "Long hair! How is he not?"
"..."
Just then, one of the children noticed something. "He's a man!"
"A man?!"
"Hahahaha-Feng Chuxun's this old and he still can't tell boys from girls."
"How can a mom be a man!"
"He actually found a fake mom to trick us!"
"I told you Feng Chuxun couldn't possibly have a mom. His mom never comes to the parent-child activities!"
Feng Chuxun cried anxiously, "So what if he's a man! My mom is a man! So what!"
"But all our moms are women?"
"Why do I have to be like you!" Feng Chuxun pouted, his little face set stubbornly as tears instantly welled in his eyes. "As long as I have a mom... that's enough."
Hearing that trembling, tearful voice, Pei Yang's heart clenched. He glanced at Feng Wanting.
Feng Wanting's expression was grim, but faced with a group of children too young to know better, there was nothing he could do.
Pei Yang frowned. Having never dealt with children, he had no idea how to comfort such a tiny little bean. He bent slightly and drew Feng Chuxun into his arms. At that same moment, the walkie-talkie clipped to his collar and the phone in Feng Wanting's pocket rang together.
Feng Wanting took out his phone and stood. The name on the screen meant he couldn't simply hang up. Today's meeting was extremely important, and he had already done everything he could to get out of it for Feng Chuxun, but he had to answer this call. At a loss, he looked at Pei Yang. "Help me... watch him for a moment."
"...Huh?" Pei Yang looked down at Feng Chuxun, who was clinging tightly to his thigh, then nodded. "Okay."
"Thank you."
After Feng Wanting left, Pei Yang unclipped his walkie-talkie. Yin Sufang was watching him from some unknown nook or cranny and shouted, "Pei Yang! I'm giving you three seconds! Clear that crowd around you right now!"
Pei Yang bent down and picked Feng Chuxun up with one arm, then said weakly into the walkie-talkie, "Copy."
"You didn't deliberately find this kid to ruin my exhibition, did you!" the walkie-talkie blared again.
"You're sick in the head," Pei Yang snapped.
