A chill ran down Feng Chuxun's spine. He clapped his little hand over his mouth and chewed even faster.
"Stop hiding it." Feng Wanting sat down opposite Feng Chuxun. "I saw everything."
Then he took a small travel pack of wet wipes from his suit's inner pocket, reached out with his long arm, pried Feng Chuxun's little hand away, and wiped every trace of pastry from the corners of his mouth.
Watching from the side, Pei Yang felt as though Feng Wanting was glowing, radiating something called "maternal love." Who would have thought that a handsome, debonair man in a sharp suit would carry wet wipes in his pocket?
"I wanned to eat it mythelf! (I wanted to eat it myself!)" Feng Chuxun rushed to speak before he had finished chewing, his words muffled by the food. "Don't blame Mommy!"
Feng Wanting glanced at Pei Yang.
He had been gone for less than ten minutes, and these two were already this close?
Feng Wanting paused. Since Feng Chuxun kept calling him Daddy, would Pei Yang get the wrong idea? Should he explain? Or...
Forget it. What was there to explain? Did Pei Yang really care about any of this?
"I'll let it slide this time, but don't do it again," Feng Wanting lectured. "You need to eat less junk food."
Pei Yang: "..."
He had only had a few bites of snacks and pastries. Was all this seriousness necessary? Were rich people's stomachs made of gold, so they could only eat gold?
Unable to help himself, he shot back, "Does being cheap automatically make something junk food? Rather than wasting your energy on things like this, Director Feng, why not pay more attention to your child's mental health?"
Feng Wanting turned his head and gave Pei Yang a look.
Pei Yang met his gaze. "Xile's kindergarten classmates may be young, but the things they say are still very hurtful. If Xile grows up in an environment where he's constantly questioned and mocked, even a healthy body won't stop him from hating school or feeling depressed."
Feng Wanting had not expected Pei Yang to care so much about Feng Chuxun. After a pause, he said, "Thank you for your concern, Curator Pei. I'll transfer Xile to another school."
"Changing schools only treats the symptoms, not the cause," Pei Yang continued mockingly. "You should hurry up and find Xile a kind stepmother, Director Feng, so he can experience a mother's love sooner. Then he won't have to make a scene like this in public."
"He is young and doesn't know any better. If anything Xile did today offended you, Curator Pei, then as his father, I apologize."
"...But," Feng Wanting changed tack, "aren't you at least a little at fault yourself, Curator Pei?"
"What did I-"
"With so many people there, why did Xile throw himself into your arms and call you Mommy? When it comes down to it, wasn't it because..." Feng Wanting lazily arched a brow, leaned closer, and lowered his voice. "You ran out of my room with your clothes in disarray, Curator Pei?"
"You!"
As the two traded barbs in their "conversation," Feng Chuxun kept turning his little head back and forth, looking at "Daddy," then "Mommy." He did not understand any of it and simply asked, "Daddy, Mommy, why don't you call each other hubby and wifey?"
Feng Wanting: "?"
Pei Yang: "?"
Feng Chuxun frowned in displeasure. "A girl in my class told me her mommy calls her daddy hubby, and her daddy calls her mommy wifey."
"..."
Pei Yang's ears tingled slightly. He let out a soft snort and watched Feng Wanting with a teasing look, waiting to see how he would respond.
There was a smile in Feng Wanting's eyes that he himself did not notice. He stroked Feng Chuxun's head. "Not all mommies and daddies call each other that."
"But I want to hear it!" Feng Chuxun wheedled at them both. "Say it, say it! Daddy, you go first!"
"Why should I go first?" Feng Wanting stalled childishly. "I'll say it if your mommy does."
Fuck.
Pei Yang really wanted to roll his eyes, but he had to keep smiling. Under the table, he gave Feng Wanting a light kick.
Feng Wanting narrowed his eyes at Pei Yang, looking fake as hell.
"Then Mommy, say it...! If you say it, Daddy will too!" Feng Chuxun happily grabbed Pei Yang's braid and swung it back and forth.
The corners of Pei Yang's mouth twitched stiffly.
That scheming bastard Feng Wanting knew he would not fall out with him in front of the child, so he had dumped the problem in his lap. Call Feng Wanting "hubby"? He might as well tell him to die.
Retreat was the best strategy. Pei Yang patted Feng Chuxun's shoulder, trying his hardest to sound gentle. "Next time. I have to get back to work."
Next time? There would never be a next time.
Pei Yang stood, turned, and fled.
"Thanks for working so hard, Mommy!" Feng Chuxun called after him in his childish voice. "Don't forget!"
Pei Yang ran even faster.
Feng Wanting withdrew his gaze and helplessly brushed the bangs out of Feng Chuxun's eyes. "Don't call him that again. He's a man. He'll get angry."
"You're lying to me again. Mommy wasn't angry at all," Feng Chuxun said. "He said I could call him that."
"...He said you could?" A rush of heat surged to Feng Wanting's head. In disbelief, he glanced again at Pei Yang's ethereal figure as he walked away. "He really agreed? What did he say to you?"
"Mommy said he really likes me, and he said..." Feng Chuxun recalled. "He also said he likes it when I call him Mommy!"
Feng Wanting was skeptical. "He really said that?"
"Of course!"
Feng Wanting could not begin to imagine Pei Yang saying those words.
Pei Yang returned to his work station, the Archery Experience Area. Most visitors had not reached this section yet, and there were only a few off-target arrows stuck in the targets. Pei Yang pulled them out one by one and put them away, then slacked off on his phone for a while during the lull.
He casually opened Moments and refreshed the feed. Someone he had never expected had posted a picture just a minute ago.
It was none other than Feng Wanting.
Feng Wanting, who had not posted on Moments for five years, had shared a photo capturing the exhibition's lively atmosphere. The colors and composition were highly professional, making it pleasing to the eye.
Pei Yang spread his index and middle fingers across the screen to zoom in, hoping to work out where Feng Wanting was in the exhibition hall from the photo. Wait... Why did the person right in the center, holding his headset as he maintained order, look more and more familiar?
He froze. It was Yin Sufang.
How could it be such a coincidence? Feng Wanting had casually snapped a photo and caught Yin Sufang in it?
While Pei Yang was puzzling over this, the sound of leather shoes striking the floor came from behind him. Guilty at being caught slacking off, he hurriedly put away his phone and turned around with a smile. Then his smile faded.
Feng Wanting really would not leave him alone. They had only just parted, and now he was standing a short distance away in the bow selection area, toying with a Recurve Bow.
"You..." Pei Yang parted his lips, only to realize he had nothing to say.
Feng Wanting wore an exquisitely tailored black suit, its shoulder lines sharp as blades, setting off his tall, straight figure. His long fingers idly plucked the bowstring, making the metal string hum faintly beneath his fingertips.
As the person in charge of this area, Pei Yang was just about to warn him not to dry-fire the bow when Feng Wanting slowly eased the string back, took an arrow from the quiver, and expertly drew the bow to its full extent, aiming the dangerous point at Pei Yang's heart.
Then he said slowly, "Curator Pei, what a coincidence."
