"Miss Lin." Even after everything she had said, Feng Wanting's voice held no anger. "Stop making a scene. Go home and wait for news that the engagement has been called off."
"Wait for what!" Lin You looked close to tears. "You've ruined everything for me! I probably have no choice but to marry you now! Go tell my father right now that-that you don't care about any of that, and that you'll be at the engagement banquet as planned."
Feng Wanting sounded amused. "Weren't you just saying you didn't want to marry me?"
"As long as you promise to turn a blind eye to what I do after we're married, I... could settle for a husband who's all looks and no use." Lin You struggled to get the words out.
Feng Wanting smiled.
Seeing his smile, Lin You thought she had a chance. Before she could breathe a sigh of relief, Feng Wanting said coldly, "In your dreams."
"You!" Lin You, a pampered heiress, had never suffered such humiliation. Her slender fingers curled into a fist, her knuckles whitening with the force, and she swung at Feng Wanting's face.
Halfway through the swing, someone caught her arm. A person had appeared out of nowhere in the corridor and stepped in front of Feng Wanting.
An almost imperceptible crease formed between Feng Wanting's brows. He looked at the back of the head before him, half a head shorter than his own, both familiar and unfamiliar, and his gaze briefly froze.
Lin You's stick-thin wrist struggled in Pei Yang's grip. It took her a while to shake him off. Flushed with anger and utterly rattled, she spotted the tiny red bumps on Pei Yang's face and lashed out without thinking. "Where did this ugly freak come from!"
Pei Yang frowned. He had barely parted his lips when Feng Wanting pulled him behind him. While Lin You and Pei Yang were arguing, Feng Wanting had taken a call. He had just hung up when Wu Rui approached from the elevators with two security guards, who seized Lin You on either side as though arresting a criminal.
"Let go of me! Feng Wanting, you've got some nerve! Ah-you're hurting me!" Lin You struggled wildly.
Feng Wanting's head throbbed at her shrill cries. Finally losing patience, he beckoned to the guards. "Be gentle and take her back to the Lin Family Old Residence."
At the words "Old Residence," Lin You struggled even harder. "Feng Wanting, don't you dare! I'm not going back! It took so much effort to sneak out! Feng Wanting! You can fucking stay single for the rest of your life! With that condition of yours, what other heiress besides me would ever marry you!"
Lin You's voice was gradually cut off by the elevator doors. Wu Rui anxiously looked Feng Wanting up and down. "Director Feng, are you all right?"
"How did she get up here?" Feng Wanting irritably loosened the tie around his neck.
"I checked... She used your father's access authorization," Wu Rui said quietly.
...In other words, Feng Gui had tacitly allowed Lin You to come here and cause this scene.
Feng Wanting briefly closed his eyes, then turned around. Pei Yang was right behind him, watching him quietly.
The moment their eyes met, Pei Yang started to say something, but Feng Wanting brushed past his shoulder, giving him only a glance. Just one glance.
"..." Pei Yang stood rooted to the spot. His steady breathing grew shallow, and for a moment, he even held his breath.
Wu Rui had no idea what was happening. He paused, nodded politely to Pei Yang, and followed Feng Wanting.
One step, two steps, three. Listening to the footsteps slowly receding behind him, Pei Yang's eyes grew damp. "Feng Wanting," he called.
The clicking of leather shoes against the floor stopped. Feng Wanting asked coolly, "Do you need something?"
Pei Yang turned around, only to see Feng Wanting's back. Feng Wanting had not even turned his head.
Wu Rui was following Feng Wanting, so naturally, when Feng Wanting stopped, he stopped too. His eyes drifted helplessly between Pei Yang and Feng Wanting, like a gossip desperate for a story he couldn't quite get hold of.
Pei Yang did not want to confront Feng Wanting in the corridor. "Can we talk in your office?" he asked.
"I don't think that's necessary."
Pei Yang snapped. "Then can you fucking turn around and face me when you talk?"
"..."
The atmosphere was strange and tense, the air itself seeming to freeze solid. Catching Feng Wanting's pointed glance, Wu Rui quietly left.
Feng Wanting remained where he was. Furious, Pei Yang strode around to stand in front of him. By the time he stopped, his feet ached. "Why did you delete me on WeChat?"
Feng Wanting lowered his head and countered, "Why should I keep a stranger on my WeChat?"
"..."
Pei Yang's throat hurt. Every nerve in his body felt swollen with aching bitterness. His right hand trembled unconsciously inside his sleeve. After a long while, he managed a smile and said cuttingly, "You haven't collected your fee for the sex yet."
Feng Wanting froze. Once he understood what "fee for the sex" meant, his breathing fell completely out of rhythm. But he quickly recovered and said, in a fairly loud voice, "No need."
Pei Yang blinked blankly.
Feng Wanting continued, "You're reasonably good-looking, and you sound nice when you moan. Those two nights weren't what I intended, but I did enjoy myself. Let's call it consensual and never bring it up again."
"..." In an instant, Pei Yang felt as though a rope had tightened around his chest, digging deeper with every breath. He nodded stiffly. "Fine."
"That settles things between us personally." Pei Yang stared hollowly at Feng Wanting, his fingers unconsciously curling and loosening. "But we can't cut ties at work just yet."
Feng Wanting feigned confusion. "Hmm?"
"The project starts next month. The Exhibition Planning Department sent me to handle the handover and report to the board." Without Pei Yang noticing, his dry eyes had already begun to glisten, and his voice trembled at the end. "So we still need to add each other on WeChat."
"Sure." Feng Wanting took out his phone and switched from his personal account to his work account right in front of Pei Yang. "Add this one."
Pei Yang lifted his lashes, clear surprise on his face.
Both were Feng Wanting's WeChat accounts, but there was a world of difference between them.
He took two quick breaths and slowly reached for his phone. Just as he was about to scan the QR code, Feng Wanting suddenly withdrew his hand, as though remembering something. "Sorry, we might not need to add each other on WeChat."
"Your job is just to handle the handover and report. Once your department has drafted the proposal, come upstairs and discuss it with me directly. There's no need for WeChat."
Pei Yang's hand froze in midair.
Feng Wanting unhurriedly turned off his screen and slipped his phone back into his suit trouser pocket. "Was there anything else?"
Pei Yang searched his mind for something to say. A dozen or so heartbeats later, he said, "I don't have access to this floor."
"How did you get up here today?"
Pei Yang answered honestly. "I borrowed Supervisor Liao's employee badge."
Afraid Feng Wanting would not believe him, he even took out Liao Yang's badge to show him.
"Thanks for the effort." Feng Wanting did not even glance at it. He smiled, but the smile was distant. "You can borrow it again next time."
Pei Yang: "..."
Now there truly was nothing left to say.
