The Eastern Route Allied Army under Alleria's command had the High Elf Expeditionary Army Corps at its core, with the Hinterlands Eastern and Western Corps forming its left and right wings.
Alleria's strategy of advancing steadily and securing each position gave the orcs no openings to exploit. They could not even climb the arrow towers to threaten the High Elf mages with arrows while they chanted their spells.
A full hundred loaded and cocked ballistae watched from the distance. Any orc archer who dared climb an arrow tower would likely be blasted to pieces before getting more than a few arrows off.
The many orc troops hiding behind the fortifications had intended to fight the Eastern Route Allied Army at close quarters once it charged into the camp. But after the bombardment, instead of an assault by masses of High Elves, trolls, or dwarves, they faced Area-of-Effect Magic Attacks from a great number of High Elf mages.
Vast banks of dark clouds merged overhead, covering the orcs, while the Wildhammer Dwarves' Gryphon Riders had already taken flight and were circling above the Orcs Camp, pinpointing concentrations of orcs for the High Elf mages.
Faced with the terrifying, almost apocalyptic spectacle brought on by so many mages unleashing area attacks at once, the orcs, sorely lacking in magical power, had no choice but to retreat for the moment.
Without enough magical power to counter it, foolishly remaining in that area would have been pointless, no matter how many troops they had. It would have been nothing short of suicide.
The orcs retreated in time, for the most part. Only a small number were too slow to withdraw, and the countless blasts of Rain of Fire and Ice Shards descending from the sky left nothing of their bodies.
