Power Progression

  • Personal Dou Qi readings and weapon strength are distinct: the three-star Da Dou Shi comparison describes his Vortex Hammer’s accumulated power, not a confirmed personal realm 104.
Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Fifth-stage Dou Qi 13 Identified retrospectively when Xiao Yi discovers that his small reserve of fifth-stage Dou Qi has disappeared.
Dou Qi depleted 13 17 Finds his body empty of Dou Qi; suspects that something near Xiao Yan is forcibly absorbing it.
Two-stage Dou Qi 63 Recorded during the clan’s cultivation test, provoking Xiao Zhan’s anger.
Unranked combat-energy accumulation 95 97 His spinning bucket drains Xiao Li and nearby mercenaries. Xiao Ding and Xiao Li interpret this as cultivation improvement; the passage locates the newly accumulated power inside the bucket.
Vortex Hammer power comparable to a three-star Da Dou Shi 103 104 Reached after extracting the Dou Qi of a dying Da Dou Shi. The weapon also begins passively absorbing ambient energy without activation.
Element-pill energy reserve 129 Learns that the Mysterious Yahe Luo Gourd can compress ambient elemental power into pills, offering a way to prepare energy before battle rather than gather it only as needed.
Jade Pivot Void Danger Scripture acquired 173 Receives Xiao Yan’s handwritten copy. Says the method will spare him from using true qi to move Dou Qi; mastery or a subsequent realm breakthrough is not documented.

Background / History

On Earth, Xiao Yi wandered with a Daoist master who praised his suitability for cultivation but criticized his restless temperament. He learned talismans, incantations, basic evil-banishing methods, blessing rites, and fortune examination. He never mastered advanced arts such as “Five Ghost Transport” or “Sowing Beans to Make Soldiers” 16.

His master later sent him to a Buddhist temple to chant scriptures with monks. After reappearing and claiming that Xiao Yi needed to escape a calamity, the master sent him to the “Church of the East,” whose members took him abroad. Xiao Yi consequently describes his training in terms of Daoist talismans and formations, Buddhist meditation, and Western prayer and communion 17.

After transmigrating, he used gold brought from Earth to commission a bicycle from Blacksmith Wang 16. Xiao Zhan subsequently adopted him, partly hoping that a lively companion would draw the dispirited Xiao Yan out of isolation. The formal ceremony replaced his mocking nickname, “Crazy Ghost,” with Xiao Yi and granted him clan membership, a status token, money, and his own courtyard 9 15 25.

Appearance

  • Build and face: Slender and youthful, with delicate features; his early opponents mistake his scrawny appearance for weakness 12 91 119.
  • Eyes: Blue 55.
  • Usual manner: A signature half-smile, hands tucked into his sleeves, and leisurely, splay-footed steps 82.
  • Clan clothing: Initially wears a newly issued Xiao Clan disciple’s outfit 10.
  • Ritual clothing: Uses a bright yellow Daoist robe embroidered with cloud and bagua motifs, paired with a whisk 68.
  • Combat clothing: A practical black vest filled with cartridges and reloading accessories 91.
  • Temporary injury: Yao Lao’s flames burn away a small tuft of his hair during a fight 52.

Personality

Xiao Yi is irreverent, theatrical, and quick to retaliate. He boasts about his techniques, disguises firearms as “Daoist arts,” and repeatedly turns disagreements with Xiao Yan into dirty brawls. His verbal agility is equally troublesome: when questioned by the Third Elder, he brazenly recasts the youths he defeated as conspirators who injured themselves to frame him 13 14 34 83.

His mischief coexists with a strong concern for vulnerable people. He takes the suspected mutilation of child beggars seriously, helps care for the rescued children, and works to locate their families. He also intervenes against academy seniors humiliating newcomers 39 48 52 175. When Xiao Yan questions whether compassion is impractical, Xiao Yi warns that sacrificing moral limits for power can become a path toward ruthless exploitation 48.

He can nevertheless be strikingly detached and lethal. He views mercenaries with hostility, though his connection to Xiao Yan makes him avoid firearms against Xiao Ding and Xiao Li. During his campaign against the Black Sand Alliance, he calmly shoots a Da Dou Shi and extracts the dying man’s remaining Dou Qi 95 103 104. After their year together, Xiao Yan increasingly regards this distance from the world as something deeper than eccentricity 119.

Abilities & Skills

Chain-Rebound Force

An internal martial art also called Pinball Force, built around circular movement, redirection, and successive rebounds 13.

  • Turns an opponent’s force against them rather than meeting it directly 13.
  • Uses contact with one enemy to propel an attack toward another 13.
  • Allows him to evade and counter several attackers in fluid succession 12 13.
  • Works better with multiple opponents to rebound between; Xiao Yi explicitly identifies single-opponent combat as a limitation 13.
  • Does not make him unbeatable in ordinary grappling: Xiao Yan can pin and overpower him during their early fights 13 34.

Dao of Constancy and Change

Xiao Yi explains his cultivation through a practical relationship between constancy and change, rather than perfect balance. He demonstrates this by transforming a Tai Chi Diagram’s sun-and-moon symbols into a fixed violet North Star and a moon 154.

  • His off-center approach accounts for his unpredictable, resilient, ball-like movements 154.
  • Yao Lao interprets the principle as meeting countless changes with the unchanging; Xiao Yi stresses that constancy and change depend on each other 154.
  • His internal practice uses true qi to move Dou Qi before he receives the Jade Pivot Void Danger Scripture 173.

Vortex Manipulation and Energy Absorption

His fighting method uses vortices to absorb and refine energy from the surroundings 129.

  • Dou Qi extraction: A spinning bucket traps Xiao Li’s whip and drains his Dou Qi; it can also cover another fighter’s head and render them unable to fight 95.
  • Growing weapon power: Extracted energy accumulates and compresses inside the Vortex Hammer 97 104.
  • Passive intake: The evolved hammer draws energy from mist, dew, soil, and stray ambient Dou Qi 104.
  • Large-scale control: He commands an enormous mud-and-rock dragon and joins its head and tail into a rotating ring around a mining mountain 111.
  • Water manipulation: Draws river water into a rapidly spinning sphere 154.
  • Concentrated strikes: Forms an air vortex in his palm and shatters a heavy stone roller 185.
  • Preparation limit: Before obtaining the gourd’s element pills, he says he can gather energy as needed but cannot store it through his usual method 129.

Exorcism and Soul Suppression

Although many of his rituals are deliberately theatrical, his wooden sword and talismans possess genuine effects against souls 21 28.

  • Knocks Yao Chen’s apparition out of the Black Ring with a talisman-tipped peachwood sword 21.
  • Injures Yao Chen’s soul origin; Yao Chen identifies the power as distinct from Dou Qi, with a suppressing and purifying quality directed at souls 28.
  • Uses red cord capable of restraining Yao Lao until Xiao Yan removes it 51 52.
  • Establishes an offering altar that lets Yao Lao temporarily leave the ring to gather intelligence 89.
  • Mixes Buddhist, Daoist, and Christian terminology in improvised invocations 18.
  • Also employs stage effects: his spectacular burning fist uses water-soaked cloth with oil on its outer layer 70.
  • Yao Lao speculates that these soul-targeting methods could make him a natural enemy of the Hall of Souls; no encounter with that organization is documented 28.

Engineering and Firearms

Xiao Yi reproduces unfamiliar Earth-style devices and makes practical use of local materials 58 89 91.

  • Repurposes a broken ritual altar into portable market furniture 29.
  • Assembles a cargo tricycle from his bicycle, wooden components, and metal parts shaped by Yao Lao’s Gu Ling Cold Flame 58.
  • Manufactures ammunition and carries modified firearms suited to his small stature 89 91.
  • Shoots through a Da Dou Shi’s Dou Qi Armor, delivering a fatal chest wound 103.
  • Uses a pistol to pierce another Da Dou Shi’s hand and wound his shoulder 111.

Improvised Combat and Escape

  • Dirty fighting: Uses groin attacks, hair-pulling, bites, and kicks to an opponent’s supporting leg 11 183.
  • Chili powder: Blinds and confuses attackers, turning a group assault into infighting 35.
  • Sword interception: Catches Xiao Ning’s blade between his palms and breaks it; calls the technique “Israeli Krav Maga” when questioned 141.
  • Vortex Swimming Dragon Hammer: Launches a manure bucket tethered by a viscous fluid chain, combining ranged strikes with close-range mop attacks 165.
  • “Earth escape”: His method is literal tunnel-digging, learned during his childhood with his master and used repeatedly to evade confinement 29 37.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Angel Halo / Halo Treasure — A nearly transparent ring of light with storage and “World Online Shopping” functions. Xiao Yi browses martial arts books and seasonings through it, later boasting that it surpasses Xiao Yan’s ring in utility and size 128 129 183.
  • Mysterious Yahe Luo Gourd — A palm-sized gourd whose talking octopus core compresses unclaimed elemental power into pills. The octopus requires fish to work 129.
  • Three Hundred Nursery Rhymes — One of the unusual treasures he inspects; he initially finds nothing remarkable about it 129.
  • Vortex Hammer — A shoulder-pole-and-bucket weapon that extracts, compresses, and eventually passively absorbs energy 95 104.
  • Firearms and ammunition — Includes a large six-shot revolver, a modified rifle, rapid-reloading moon clips, and the Thompson Contender taken by Xiao Yan 91 111.
  • Ritual implements — Peachwood sword, talismans, bronze bell, cross pendant, wooden prayer beads, red cord, and whisk. Xiao Yan breaks one early wooden sword during a market fight 17 18 34 51 68.
  • Bicycle and cargo tricycle — The bicycle provides transportation and supports his livelihood; its rebuilt tricycle form carries recovering children home 9 16 58 60.
  • Music box — A black wooden box operated with a knob, used to play lively music for the children 58.
  • Fortune-telling tools — A battered eight-trigram compass, rusted copper coins, and a worn scroll 30.
  • Jade Pivot Void Danger Scripture — A cultivation text copied and given to him by Xiao Yan 173.

Relationships

  • Xiao Zhan — Adoptive father and clan head. Grants him membership and a home, disciplines him for his disruptions, and later acknowledges his exceptional strength 9 37 185.
  • Xiao Yan — Adoptive younger brother, fellow Earth transmigrator, frequent opponent, and trusted collaborator. They cooperate to help injured children despite their constant fights; Xiao Yan nurses him through a fever and later recognizes his value as a protector of the clan 15 39 48 77 185.
  • Yao Chen / Yao Lao — Initially the target of his exorcisms and threats, later a reluctant collaborator in healing, engineering, intelligence gathering, and staged rituals. Yao Lao remains fascinated by his unusual powers 21 28 58 67 89 124.
  • Xun’er — Objects to his accusations against Xiao Yan. Their interactions also include Xiao Yi delivering a thread-bound book that deepens her appreciation of Xiao Yan 11 82.
  • Xiao Ding and Xiao Li — Xiao Yan’s elder brothers. Xiao Yi avoids shooting them because of their family connection but drains their Dou Qi and repeatedly provokes them over his treatment of Xiao Yan 95 97 121.
  • Xiao Ning — Recurring antagonist who leads group attacks against him and challenges his legitimacy as a clan member. Xiao Yi defeats his followers and later breaks his sword 12 35 141.
  • Unnamed Daoist master — His childhood teacher on Earth, responsible for his Daoist training and subsequent stays among Buddhists and Christians 16 17.
  • Paul — The talking octopus core of the gourd, named by Xiao Yi after explaining its pill-making function 129.
  • Huzi, Goudan, and the rescued children — Children he helps care for, entertain, and return to their families 48 52 58 60.

Notable Quotes

“If I can't cultivate Dou Qi, I'll try another path!” 17

“At first, you might just want to be a little more ‘realistic’ and avoid some trouble. But once you open that breach, your moral bottom line can keep sinking.” 48

“My specialty is performing shamanic rituals, and I've held two exorcisms in the Xiao Clan. As for my usual hobbies... well, I like picking on Xiao Yan.” 96

Trivia

  • Xiao Yi privately suspects his name was chosen as a pun on being an adopted—or “yi”—son, despite Xiao Zhan’s explanation about the clan’s “Yi” generation 9.
  • While feverish, he murmurs English lyrics. Xiao Yan connects his memories of an MJ concert with the hopeful possibility that Xiao Yi lived long enough to witness peace; this remains Xiao Yan’s conjecture 77.
  • His theatrical attacks include shouting “Ha-dou-ken” during the public exorcism and “Useless, useless, useless!” during a later fight 70 185.
