The old shopkeeper's face filled with anguish at the sight, but Xue Ju's slap had injured him so badly that he could barely stand, much less do anything.
Old Daoist Huang immediately asked the old shopkeeper in a low voice:
"Xu, who exactly is this man?"
Over the past fortnight, he had already become well acquainted with everyone in the restaurant.
Amid Xue Ju's shouting, the old shopkeeper sighed and said:
"Xue Ju was the proprietress's husband, and the original owner of Fortune Comes Restaurant. But he was an idle wastrel. He had cultivation, yet never put it to any proper use."
"Later, he even gambled so heavily that he pawned off Fortune Comes Restaurant, and then vanished without a trace."
"Afterward, the mistress sought help from her family and finally redeemed the restaurant."
"Things had only just started looking up when this scoundrel got wind of it somewhere and came running back. He gathered a pack of disreputable cronies and tried to take the restaurant back."
"Fortunately, Shenhou Ruins' market followed its rules and paid him no heed, so the mistress managed to keep the restaurant."
"But ever since, every few years, he comes back with others to make trouble and extorts most of the restaurant's earnings from her."
After hearing the old shopkeeper's explanation, understanding dawned on all three of them.
