Background / History

Lingyue comes from a different cultivation continent, where medicinal pills can enable people with mortal bones to cultivate. She attributes their exclusion from cultivation on Xu Taiping’s continent to severed cultivation legacies, though she later recognizes that its scarce spiritual energy and stronger laws of Heaven present additional obstacles 10 36. She eventually identifies her homeland as the Sumeru Realm and warns Xu Taiping not to investigate it before reaching the Transformation Realm, because powerful beings use the One-Leaf Book to search for Sumeru cultivators 266.

Alchemy was her greatest specialty. Her initially unnamed sect is later identified as Huangting Dao Palace, whose master she identifies herself as when offering to vouch for Gongshu Bai. Her own master is Zuoxing, the Sword Ancestor’s successor and lord of the Yellow Court; she once witnessed him slay a dragon single-handedly. She initially avoids teaching Xu Taiping her sect’s secret arts because recognition of their lineage could expose his connection to her and bring deadly calamities upon him 34 35 47 810 882 3940.

Lingyue’s cultivation history spans several lives. Seeking to complete a sword strike inherited from the Sword Ancestor, she repeatedly reincarnated and cultivated within Buddhist, Confucian, and Daoist traditions. She later explains that only through these successive lives did she gather the powers necessary to unleash the inheritance. Her Confucian cultivation alone extends across three lifetimes 1427 3983.

During an upheaval she initially refuses to describe, a palm strike shattered her divine soul and left gaps in her personal memories. She cannot guarantee that further Earth Fruit harvests will restore those memories 1350. Her original body was not destroyed, but sealed by an existence she could not safely name. She also explains that she abandoned that body and merged with the Earth Fruit to sever a strand of karma, escaping to the mortal world of True Martial Heaven rather than being consumed as a Dao fruit by a half-immortal 980 1723.

By the time Xu Taiping plants his grandfather’s soybean seed, Lingyue has survived inside it as a remnant soul for six hundred years. She reveals that it is the Earth Treasury Fruit and exchanges its secrets and a cultivation-enabling prescription for the contents of two of its three pods. Its continued development provides the means to repair her soul and eventually produce a substitute body, rather than directly restore her sealed original body 9 11 980 1652.

Much later, the Gray-Robed Daoist reveals that Zuoxing entrusted her sleeping soul to an Earth Fruit before entering Taiqing Paradise with her eldest senior brother. The Daoist had previously borrowed Zuoxing’s sword to sever a surviving portion of Sumeru as the Great Void Calamity devoured it, preserving many of its legacies. Journey Beyond True Martial Heaven

Before departing, Lingyue arranges for Lü Daoxuan to protect Xu Taiping and leaves a Divine Soul Mark explaining matters she cannot safely disclose directly. Lü persuades her not to rely solely on concealment: once Xu Taiping reaches Heaven Shocking, he will tell him the truth, and she must leave clues that make assistance possible. She promises to preserve herself if trapped and wait for them rather than face every danger alone 1936 1937.

Her journey is connected to battlefield ruins, the Heaven-Demon Battlefield, and the passage used by the Heavenly Emperor and surviving divine officials to reach Taiqing Paradise after the Ancient Heavenly Court’s destruction. Immortal Elder Wuji later relays a message assuring Xu Taiping that she is safe, although communication takes more than a decade 1907 2511 3333.

The route she initially leaves for Xu Taiping is not her true route. She later admits that it was designed to provide cultivation opportunities, protect him for ten thousand years, and help him escape the Great Void Calamity without entering her karma. As he overcomes successive trials, she reveals more, ultimately acknowledging that his rescue of Dugu Qingxiao from the Yellow Springs leaves her no justification for forbidding him to seek her 3005 3103 3333.

Reunion and the Heaven-Treading Contest

When Xu Taiping reaches the realm in which she has been hiding, Lingyue steps before him and breaks the Demon Mother’s attack. Despite the severe cost, she tells him to continue forming the Human Race Army’s battle formations while she holds off the enemy, with Lin Buyu and Lin Buyan offering assistance 3895.

She then advises him that reopening Shangqing’s path to ascension is insufficient unless Taiqing Paradise—the hidden power that would otherwise seize that opportunity again—is confronted directly. She reveals that Taiqing Paradise has become Yujitian and that the answer she found concerning the Great Void Calamity is deeply entangled with it and the contest 3933 3934.

Lingyue eagerly hopes to be selected for the Heaven-Treading Contest but is not chosen by the Heavenly Dao Edict. Even so, she accepts one of the Ancestral Dragon’s three secret opportunities after Xu Taiping and Lady Jade Mother suggest that another way to participate may be found 3935 3941 3948.
