The hollow was quiet, but not the kind of quiet that put people on guard. Lu Chi and Ning Xiaohe sat by the puddle for quite a while without either of them speaking. The wind that passed through the hollow was warm, carrying the scent of grass blades and wet earth. It was neither too light nor too strong, just enough to disperse the stifling heat they had brought out of the pine forest.
Lu Chi's left arm was still itchy, though the wound on his palm had stopped bleeding. The bruising on his knee stretched all the way down to his calf, swollen in a ring, and he could barely put strength into it when he walked. But none of that seemed too important. Sitting on the ground and watching the tadpoles dart through the water plants, he felt as though the sensation of his heart nearly leaping out of his throat back in the pine forest had happened a long time ago.
Ning Xiaohe suddenly spoke. "Mr. Luo."
"Mm."
"If Lu Chi hadn't drawn that Grey Stinger away just now, and had retreated from the right with me instead, what would have happened?"
Luo Wen sat at the top of the slope, one elbow braced on his knee. He glanced down at them.
"It would have chased you to the edge of the pine forest, then stopped at the boundary. Once you left the forest, it would have gone back. It doesn't touch anything outside the pine forest."
Ning Xiaohe was silent for a moment before saying, "Then he wouldn't have gotten hurt."
Lu Chi immediately cut in. "What's wrong with getting hurt? It's just a little scraped skin."
