Background / History

Jiang Hai arrived in the world of Douluo Continent: Peerless Tang Sect after selecting it in his previous world. He transmigrated in soul alone and became an infant. His mother died in childbirth, leaving his father, Jiang Tian, to raise him 1.

Jiang Tian operated a mortuary using his wooden-coffin martial soul. Despite collecting bodies and providing burial arrangements, he remained too poor to afford his son’s martial soul awakening. Jiang Hai consequently passed the normal awakening age of six without receiving the ceremony 1.

To raise the necessary money, Jiang Tian traveled into the Dujing City area during an outbreak of Evil Soul Master activity. The Evil Soul Masters captured him and used him as a hostage against Shrek Academy’s pursuing students. His coffin and accumulated corpse aura led the Shrek party to mistake him for one of their enemies, and he died during the incident 1.

At eight, Jiang Hai carried his father’s coffin over a hundred li from Dujing City to Pinghai City. Zhang Lexuan, who had led Shrek’s Inner Court group, subsequently awakened his martial soul and promised to help him obtain his first ring 1 9.

Over the following three years, Jiang Hai traveled through more than half the Star Luo Empire. He killed Pinghai City’s lord, Lin Youtian, in pursuit of revenge and sealed his corpse inside the Bronze Coffin. Refining that corpse enabled his rapid growth in strength and soul power 2 5 8.

Appearance

  • Build: Thin, with relatively slender arms despite his extraordinary strength 3 11.
  • Hands: Covered in thick calluses by age eleven, reflecting years of physical hardship 10.
  • Diamond Body transformation: His exposed skin turns gold, giving him the appearance of someone cast from solid gold 5.
  • Martial soul: An enormous bronze coffin covered in mottled verdigris, with ancient patterns still visible beneath the corrosion 1 8.

Personality

Jiang Hai is rebellious, stubborn, and irreverent, but deeply committed to becoming stronger. He does not accept teachers or institutions as unquestionable authorities, preferring to judge their advice against his own principles. His provocative challenges to older students serve both to earn money and to force his potential to its limits 16 35 36.

His father’s death leaves him with resentment, guilt, and a fierce hatred of wrongdoing. He nevertheless regards coffins as protective resting places rather than inherently evil objects. As his martial soul grows stronger, he becomes increasingly conscious that power without self-restraint could endanger him 1 2 4 9.

He prizes personal freedom over patriotic obligation and initially considers moving to the Sun Moon Continent. In combat, he treats deception and surprise as legitimate tactics rather than violations of honor. This outlook repeatedly clashes with Wang Dong’s expectations and the academy’s rules 2 7 29 31.

Despite his abrasive manner, Jiang Hai recognizes kindness and supports his friends. He accepts Shrek’s invitation largely because of Zhang Lexuan, helps classmates develop their martial souls, and eagerly studies theory once he gains access to proper instruction 5 24 27.

Abilities & Skills

Bronze Coffin Martial Soul

A mutation of Jiang Tian’s wooden-coffin martial soul, the Bronze Coffin combines physical reinforcement, corpse refinement, protection, and heavy-weapon combat 4 8.

  • Corpse refinement: Devours the strength and soul power of sealed corpses. Lin Youtian’s remains were the principal source of Jiang Hai’s early growth 5 8.
  • Soul ring filtration: Makes violent soul-beast energy gentler and easier to absorb, allowing him to withstand rings beyond ordinary age limits. The total energy still places strain on his body 4 10.
  • Heavy weapon and shield: Jiang Hai swings the coffin to crush opponents or places it between himself and incoming attacks 11 12 16.
  • Expanded interior: After his first ring, the coffin grows from roughly ten to thirteen feet long; its internal space is approximately ten times larger than its exterior 8.
  • Underwater refuge: An invisible force keeps lake water outside when the coffin opens, allowing him to enter and cultivate beneath Sea God Lake 25.

Golden Coffin and Intelligence Enhancement

The Golden Coffin formed inside the Bronze Coffin when the Diamond Tiger’s corpse and soul bone dissolved into golden liquid. It remains part of the same evolved martial soul 4.

  • Faster soul-power growth: Its formation initially doubles the rate at which Jiang Hai receives soul power 8.
  • Intelligence enhancement: Sharpens his perception and makes previously hazy memories clearer 8.
  • Refinement of a living occupant: Ma Xiaotao’s cultivation inside it increases his strength, intelligence, and soul power without requiring her death 27 28.
  • Concealment: Jiang Hai hides its capabilities because he fears corpse refinement will cause Shrek’s staff to classify him as an Evil Soul Master 5 9 31.

Diamond Body

His first soul skill comes from the eight-hundred-year-old royal-blooded Diamond Tiger. Golden light from the Golden Coffin spreads across his body when activated 5.

  • Greatly strengthens resistance to blows and physical endurance, making his “bones like crystal glass” and “body like diamond” 5.
  • Increases physical strength by approximately 10% 5.
  • Can initially be maintained for around half an hour, provided he is not fighting intensely 5.
  • Its quality is compared to an ordinary thousand-year soul skill despite coming from a hundred-year-category ring 5.

Borrow Power / Borrow Strength

Jiang Hai can temporarily draw on the power of a body sealed within his martial soul. He first openly demonstrates this by borrowing Lin Youtian’s strength against Xu Sanshi 19.

  • Corpse borrowing: Adds the sealed corpse’s remaining strength to his own, but heavily depletes that stored power with each use 19.
  • Living-source borrowing: Uses Ma Xiaotao’s strength to suppress her evil fire while she is inside the Golden Coffin 26 27.
  • Proximity borrowing: After prolonged cultivation together, Ma Xiaotao’s aura becomes embedded in his martial soul. He can then borrow part of her power without enclosing her, provided they are not too far apart 46.
  • Physical limits: Borrowed power does not make him invulnerable. His arm’s blood vessels rupture during the Hell White Tiger battle, and he admits he could not have won without Ma Xiaotao’s help 44 46.

Evil Suppression and Spiritual Resistance

The coffin can suppress and refine Ma Xiaotao’s phoenix evil fire. Their first successful treatment completely clears her immediate evil fire, relieving its effects for at least half a month 27.

  • Contact with Ma Xiaotao’s power strengthens the evil-suppressing quality of Jiang Hai’s soul aura 42.
  • Gives strong resistance to abnormal spiritual effects, including Cui Yajie’s Charm and Huo Yuhao’s Spiritual Shock 42 48.
  • He cannot directly wield the strengthened soul aura as a separate technique 42.
  • Repeated treatments place dangerous strain on him; he warns Ma Xiaotao that frequent use could kill him without Mystic Water Pills 27.

Combat Judgment and Martial Soul Guidance

Jiang Hai combines overwhelming strength with prediction, timing, and tactical planning rather than relying on brute force alone 13 17 25.

  • Attack prediction: Calculates an opponent’s likely attack path and timing, then strikes in advance. A mistaken prediction can leave his heavy weapon too slow to recover 13 17.
  • Strength control: Practices reducing the noise of his steps while carrying extreme weight, refining his handling of force 25.
  • Illusion tactics: Helps Sun Yunhai turn Seven-Colored Cloud Illusion into disguises, duplicates, and deceptive battlefield shapes 24 33.
  • Weapon instruction: Demonstrates sweeping shuo techniques for Wang Cheng and recommends strength training, suitable rings, and a mount 24.
  • Knowledge acquisition: Studies martial souls and soul beasts intensely to compensate for the fragmentary information retained from his previous life 27.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Bronze Coffin: His martial soul also functions as his principal weapon, shield, storage space, and cultivation chamber. Its reported weight doubles from roughly 700 to 1,400 jin after the Golden Coffin forms 3 8 11.
  • Iron training garment: Weighs 200 jin; combined with his coffin, his weighted-running load exceeds 1,700 jin 25.
  • Mystic Water Pills: Wins three from Xu Sanshi’s wager. Their meridian-cleansing and constitution-improving effects are especially valuable given his low initial aptitude 18 19 20.
  • Soul Ascension Pill: Remains unused through Chapter 50. Jiang Hai intends to save its one-rank increase for advancing from rank twenty-nine to thirty 28 50.
  • Forty-thousand-year-old White Tiger Left Arm Soul Bone: Receives it as compensation from the White Tiger Duke’s family. He stores it rather than absorbs it, suspecting a soul bone may be more useful for forming another coffin layer; Zhang Lexuan also warns that the family may seek its return 46 50.

Relationships

  • Jiang Tian — Father. Raised Jiang Hai alone and died while trying to finance his awakening; Jiang Hai vows to continue his work of collecting bodies, targeting “monsters in human skin” 1.
  • Zhang Lexuan — Benefactor and trusted senior-sister figure, not his formal master. Awakens his martial soul, helps secure Shrek admission, defends him from accusations, and delivers his compensation soul bone 1 6 9 26 46 50.
  • Ma Xiaotao — Cultivation partner, protector, and combat mentor. Exchanges protection for access to his coffin’s evil-fire suppression, regards him as her junior brother, and opposes his interest in transferring toward soul tools 27 35 46.
  • Chen Yong — Roommate in Dormitory 109, close friend, and assessment teammate. Calls Jiang Hai “Boss,” follows his training advice, and keeps watch while he absorbs medicine 13 20 29.
  • Sun Yunhai — Classmate and assessment teammate. Develops his cloud illusions through Jiang Hai’s guidance and supplies the deception central to their team’s tactics 24 29 33.
  • Huo Yuhao — Friend and rival. Helps Jiang Hai against Ma Xiaotao with Spiritual Detection and Sharing, protects the coffin’s secret, and thanks him for confronting Dai Huabin 26 27 46.
  • Wang Dong / Tang Wutong — Classmate and rival. Jiang Hai recognizes her identity during admission; they clash over combat ethics and later face each other in the assessment final 11 29 48.
  • Zhou Yi — Homeroom teacher. Appoints him acting monitor, challenges his behavior, and recognizes his independence and cultivation dedication 21 24 35.
  • Xu Sanshi — Wagered opponent and source of Mystic Water Pills. Loses their restricted duel when Jiang Hai’s borrowed-power strike forces him to use a soul skill 18 19.
  • Dai Huabin — Hostile assessment rival. Jiang Hai defeats his fusion with Zhu Lu and acts partly on behalf of Huo Yuhao’s grievance 41 44 46.
  • Lin Youtian — Revenge target whose corpse fuels Jiang Hai’s early development. His remains eventually crumble to dust during refinement 5 8 27.

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Soul Ring and Shrek Recruitment

Jiang Hai accompanies Zhang Lexuan into the Star Dou Great Forest and insists on challenging the royal-blooded Diamond Tiger despite her warning that its ring exceeds his physical limits. He kills it with repeated coffin strikes, safely filters its energy, and gains both Diamond Body and the Golden Coffin 2 3 4 5.

Although Zhang Lexuan initially proposes Tang Sect membership as a route into Shrek, Jiang Hai declines Bei Bei’s invitation. He considers the sect’s finesse-oriented arts poorly suited to his forceful fighting style. He eventually chooses Shrek while concealing Lin Youtian’s corpse and the Golden Coffin’s abilities 5 8 9.

Admission and Upperclassman Challenges

During Shrek’s admission tests, Jiang Hai demonstrates his coffin’s weight, passes the ring-and-skill assessment, and dominates much of the combat trial. He enrolls alongside Wang Dong, Chen Yong, and Le Qianqian 11 12 13.

Before regular classes begin, he challenges second- and third-year students for ten gold coins per fight. His victories establish his Outer Court reputation, produce a rank-fourteen breakthrough, and culminate in the restricted wager against Xu Sanshi 16 17 18 19.

Class One and Ma Xiaotao’s Evil Fire

As acting monitor, Jiang Hai helps classmates identify new uses for their martial souls and inspires them during Zhou Yi’s weighted-running trial 24 25.

When Ma Xiaotao approaches under the influence of her evil fire, he intervenes to protect Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong. The incident reveals that his coffins can suppress her condition, leading to a mutually beneficial cultivation arrangement and later intensive combat training 25 26 27 28 35.

Freshman Assessment

Jiang Hai teams with Chen Yong and Sun Yunhai, registering all three as support soul masters to mislead opponents. Their illusion-based strategies conceal much of their strength while carrying them through the early matches and into the semifinals 29 31 33 41.

Against Dai Huabin and Zhu Lu, Jiang Hai sends his teammates off the arena and defeats the Hell White Tiger with repeated coffin blows empowered by Ma Xiaotao. Yan Shaozhe subsequently confirms that he is not an Evil Soul Master, and the White Tiger Duke’s family is ordered to compensate him with a soul bone 44 46.

His team faces Huo Yuhao, Wang Dong, and Xiao Xiao in the final, where spiritual attacks and detection challenge their usual tactics. Chapter 50 records the team celebrating its victory; Jiang Hai then prepares to hunt his second ring with Zhang Lexuan and Ma Xiaotao 46 48 50.
