Black tentacles swept toward Mu Chen and the others like towering black waves, each one radiating a nauseating aura of evil. Sharp barbs covered their surfaces, glinting coldly in the darkness like the Grim Reaper's scythe. Mu Chen's gaze sharpened, and he reacted swiftly. Spiritual energy gathered in his hand, forming a dazzling sword that he swung at the nearest tentacle. With a clang, the spiritual energy sword collided with the tentacle, sending black sparks of spiritual energy flying. Although the tentacle was driven back a little, the powerful recoil sent Mu Chen sliding several steps backward. "These tentacles are powerful! Everyone, attack together!" Mu Chen shouted. The other cultivators unleashed their strongest attacks. Beams of spiritual energy, firestorms, showers of frost arrows, and all manner of offensive techniques rained down on the black tentacles. Working together, they temporarily held the tentacles' assault at bay. Yet the tentacles seemed endless; no sooner had one wave been repelled than another surged forward. Amid the fierce fighting, Mu Chen discovered that the tentacles' attacks seemed to follow a pattern. They would first attack from one direction, then swiftly change course when they met resistance, launching another assault from elsewhere in an attempt to disrupt the group's defenses. "Watch for changes in the direction of their attacks!" Mu Chen warned his companions. He concentrated, carefully observing the tentacles' movements as he tried to find a way to counter them. Suddenly, Mu Chen noticed a mysterious dark figure flickering in and out of view at the edge of the black vortex. Its form was indistinct, as though condensed from dark spiritual energy, yet it exuded an aura of absolute control. Whenever the dark figure moved, the black tentacles' attacks became fiercer and more precise. "Look, there's a dark figure over there. I think it might be the key to controlling these tentacles," Mu Chen told his companions, pointing toward it. His companions followed his finger and spotted the mysterious dark figure as well. "We need to find a way to attack that dark figure. Perhaps that will eliminate the threat of these tentacles," said the cultivator in silver armor. They continued fending off the tentacles while moving toward the dark figure. But it seemed to sense their intentions. The dark spiritual energy around it grew denser, forming layer upon layer of protective barriers. "Let's combine our strength and break through those barriers first!" Mu Chen said. He pushed the spiritual energy within his body to its limit and unleashed Surging Star River, the second level of Star Transformation. A small phantom star river appeared around him, and the stellar power within it erupted with his attack, blasting toward the dark figure's barriers. The other cultivators also unleashed their ultimate techniques. Their powerful spiritual attacks converged, pounding the barriers like cannonballs. Under the relentless barrage, cracks began to appear in the dark figure's defenses. At the sight, the dark figure let out a low roar. It reverberated through the ruins like thunder, its powerful sound waves battering the cultivators' minds. Some of the weaker cultivators turned pale under the impact, their spiritual energy falling into disarray. "Steady your minds!" Mu Chen bellowed. He forcibly steadied his own mind while increasing his spiritual energy output, continuing to attack the dark figure's barriers. Through their unrelenting efforts, the barriers finally shattered. Exposed before them, the dark figure had a humanoid body but no facial features. Black smoke streamed from its entire body, making it look exceedingly eerie. The dark figure seemed furious that its barriers had been broken. It waved its arms, and the surrounding black tentacles attacked Mu Chen and the others as though driven mad. At the same time, its body began to swell, and the black smoke rising from it transformed into beams of black spiritual energy that shot toward the cultivators. Mu Chen bore the brunt of the assault, yet he faced the rain of attacks without a trace of fear. Using nimble footwork, he darted between them. The spiritual energy sword in his hand flashed again and again, severing every black tentacle that came near him. Meanwhile, he used his powerful soul force to sense the direction of the dark figure's attacks and evade them in advance. The other cultivators fought their own battles, clashing fiercely with the black tentacles and beams of spiritual energy. The battlefield descended into chaos, the radiance of spiritual energy interweaving with black smoke and illuminating the entire ruins. During the battle, Mu Chen discovered that whenever the dark figure launched a large-scale attack, a brief weakness appeared in its own defenses. Seizing the right moment, he charged toward it. The instant he drew close, he unleashed his strongest strike-Wrath of the Starry Firmament, the third level of Star Transformation. A complete phantom starry firmament condensed around his body, containing a vast reservoir of stellar power. With a loud shout, he blasted that power toward the dark figure. The strike was immensely powerful, like a blazing meteor crashing into the earth, carrying the momentum to destroy heaven and earth. Sensing the tremendous power of the blow, the dark figure tried to dodge, but it was already too late. Wrath of the Starry Firmament struck it squarely, erupting in dazzling light. The tremendous impact hurled the dark figure backward, while the surrounding black tentacles dissipated beneath the force of the blast. Yet the dark figure had not been destroyed. After struggling on the ground for a moment, it rose again. Although its body had become somewhat insubstantial, an even fiercer look shone in its eyes. "This thing is incredibly tenacious!" Mu Chen said with a frown. He knew they had to find a way to destroy the dark figure completely, or they would never resolve the crisis on the Spirit Road. The dark figure attacked again, changing its tactics this time. Instead of merely using black tentacles and beams of spiritual energy, it poured dark spiritual energy into its surroundings. The walls of the ruins began to tremble, and huge chunks of stone broke loose, hurtling toward the cultivators. At the same time, numerous black spiritual energy vortices appeared on the ground, their powerful suction threatening to drag the cultivators inside. Faced with this new crisis, Mu Chen and his companions united once more. Some shattered the falling stones, while others evaded the pull of the spiritual energy vortices. Even as he dodged, Mu Chen kept his eyes fixed on the dark figure, searching for a new opening. While evading one of the falling stones, Mu Chen discovered that when the dark figure controlled the changes in the ruins, its connection to the surrounding dark spiritual energy briefly fluctuated. This was a perfect opportunity, and Mu Chen decided to attack it again. After a brief exchange with his companions, he charged toward the dark figure. As he approached, he deftly avoided the falling stones and spiritual energy vortices. When he reached the dark figure, he and several of the stronger cultivators attacked simultaneously. They pooled their spiritual energy, forming a powerful shock wave that blasted toward it. The dark figure sensed the danger, but it was occupied with controlling the ruins and could not devote its full strength to dodging. The spiritual energy shock wave struck it, and it let out a piercing scream. Its body began to tremble violently, and the surrounding dark spiritual energy fell into turmoil. "Keep attacking!" Mu Chen shouted. Taking advantage of the dark figure's weakened state, they launched another round of attacks. Under the continuous barrage, it finally could no longer hold on. Its body gradually dissipated, turning into a cloud of black smoke that vanished into the air. With the dark figure's disappearance, the black vortex within the ruins slowly began to settle. The surrounding evil spiritual energy gradually dispersed, and the symbols and patterns on the walls, previously shrouded in darkness, no longer flickered with an eerie light. "Did we succeed?" one of their companions asked wearily. "We should have resolved the problem here for now, but we still need to investigate further to make sure the Spirit Road is no longer threatened," Mu Chen said. They inspected the ruins carefully and only breathed a sigh of relief after finding nothing else amiss. Although investigating these strange occurrences had been extremely difficult, they had successfully found the source of the problem and resolved the crisis, restoring peace to the Spirit Road. Yet Mu Chen had a premonition that this incident might only be the beginning, and that the Spirit Road might still conceal more secrets and dangers unknown to anyone. In the days ahead, he would have to keep improving his strength to face whatever new challenges might arise.
