Chapter 4: Crisis descended. In the mysterious, unfathomable space of the Spirit Road, Mu Chen had cut through thorns and brambles, beginning to show his edge, but the ripples of fate could swell into terrifying waves when least expected. As he ventured deeper, an unprecedented crisis was quietly descending. It was a seemingly ordinary day. Sunlight filtered through the Spirit Road's strange clouds and mist, dappling the path ahead of Mu Chen. He and his companions had just left the ancient ruins filled with treasures and dangers and were heading into unknown territory. The scenery around them was as lovely as a painting or a poem: brilliant spirit flowers swayed gently in the breeze, giving off an enchanting fragrance; graceful spirit birds circled overhead, their feathers shimmering with multicolored light like sprites of the sky. Yet beneath this peaceful, beautiful facade lurked a deadly threat. They reached the edge of a vast, boundless forest, where thick mist hung among the trees and faint pulses of powerful spiritual energy emanated from within. Mu Chen frowned slightly. He could sense that this forest was unusual, but curiosity about the unknown and a thirst for exploration led them to enter nonetheless. Shortly after they stepped into the forest, the temperature plummeted, and an eerie chill began to assail them. The mist thickened, drastically reducing visibility, until they could only find their way through a vague sense of spiritual energy. Suddenly, a deep, thunderous roar came from the depths of the forest. It sounded like a furious cry from hell, shaking the ground beneath their feet and sending leaves showering from the surrounding trees. Mu Chen's heart tightened. He realized that something powerful was approaching. Before they could react, an enormous magical beast emerged from the mist. Its body was as massive as a mountain, covered in black scales, each like a sturdy shield gleaming coldly in the dim light. Its eyes resembled two enormous red lanterns, glowing with bloodlust and savagery. Fangs as sharp as spears filled its huge mouth, and foul-smelling saliva streamed from its corners. The moment it appeared, the magical beast lunged at Mu Chen and his companions like a bolt of black lightning. Mu Chen hurriedly summoned his spiritual energy and darted backward, shouting for his companions to scatter and dodge. But the beast's reach was far too great. With a single sweep of its enormous claw, it sent several of his companions flying. Blood spattered through the air, and their screams echoed through the forest. Anger and resolve flashed in Mu Chen's eyes. He knew he could not retreat now. Gripping his longsword tightly, he poured every bit of spiritual energy in his body into it, and the blade erupted with dazzling light. He charged at the beast, unleashing a fiercely incisive sequence of sword strikes. Each stroke carried his strongest spiritual attack as he tried to find a weakness in its body. But the beast's defenses surpassed anything he had imagined. His attacks struck its scales and produced only a few faint sparks, unable to inflict any real damage. Seemingly enraged by his assault, the beast opened its gaping, blood-red maw and spewed a torrent of black flames. The fire held immense spiritual energy and burned at an extremely high temperature. Wherever it swept, the ground was instantly scorched and trees turned to ash. Mu Chen hastily raised a spiritual energy shield to block the flames, but their impact was too powerful, and cracks began to spread across his shield. He gritted his teeth and fought with all his strength to sustain it, yet that tremendous force still hurled him backward into a large tree. The tree snapped under the impact, and Mu Chen fell to the ground, blood gushing from his mouth. His companions, too, were trapped in desperate straits. Some had been grievously wounded by the beast's attacks and could no longer fight; others had lost their way in the thick mist amid the chaos, their fate unknown. Looking at the devastation before him, Mu Chen was filled with despair and an unwillingness to accept defeat. He knew that unless he found a way to deal with this beast, they would all perish here. The beast gave him no chance to catch his breath. It lunged at him again, its enormous claw whipping up a gale as it swept toward him with crushing force. Mu Chen endured the pain and tried to rise and dodge, but the agony in his body slowed his movements. Just as he thought he would die beneath its claw, a mysterious force suddenly came from deep within the forest and briefly halted the beast's attack. Seizing the opportunity, Mu Chen stood and looked toward the source of that mysterious force. Through the dense mist, he could just make out a blurry figure. Before he could get a clear look, the beast attacked again. Apparently enraged by the interference, it charged at him with even greater frenzy. Mu Chen knew he could not rely on a mysterious force that might belong to friend or foe. He had to depend on himself. He closed his eyes. With his life hanging by a thread, he struggled to still his heart. He recalled the days of arduous training back with his clan, the moments when he had gritted his teeth and persevered despite his clansmen's cold treatment, and his mother's gentle face. Those memories became a source of strength, kindling a flame of hope in his heart. He began to attempt a new way of wielding spiritual energy, one inspired by the murals he had found while exploring the ruins, but which he had never fully mastered. He circulated his spiritual energy along a special route through his body, then gathered it in his palm. His hand began to emit a strange light containing a unique fluctuation of spiritual energy. When the beast lunged in front of him once more, he snapped his eyes open and thrust the energy in his palm toward it. His spiritual energy collided with the beast's power in an earth-shaking explosion. The immense shock wave dispersed some of the surrounding mist and sent Mu Chen flying once again. This time, however, his attack finally had an effect. The beast's body trembled slightly, and fine cracks appeared in its hard scales. The beast seemed somewhat surprised as well. It stopped attacking and stared at Mu Chen with its enormous, savage eyes, as though reassessing this seemingly weak human. Mu Chen took the opportunity to catch his breath. He knew the crisis had only been eased for the moment. The beast would soon attack again, and he had to devise a more effective response in this brief respite, or death would still await him. With his life at stake, Mu Chen's mind raced. Studying the cracks on the beast's body, he noticed that they were concentrated around its neck and abdomen. He suspected these might be its comparatively vulnerable areas, but striking them was easier said than done. The beast was extremely vigilant, and its attacks remained devastatingly powerful. While Mu Chen racked his brains, the mysterious force appeared again. This time, it seemed to be guiding him. Sensing its intent, he followed its guidance and discovered certain unusual features in his surroundings. Natural spiritual array patterns existed within this forest. Under normal circumstances, they were difficult to detect, but with the mysterious force guiding him, Mu Chen became aware of their presence. An idea stirred in his heart: perhaps he could use these patterns to fight the beast. Following the mysterious force's guidance, he began to merge his own spiritual energy with the array patterns. As he infused them with energy, they began to glow. The surrounding spiritual energy gathered toward them, forming a special spiritual energy field. The beast seemed to sense the danger. It roared furiously at Mu Chen and the array patterns, then attacked again. Charging toward the patterns, it sought to destroy the thing that threatened it. Mu Chen watched for his opportunity. Once the beast entered the array's effective range, he unleashed the patterns' power with all his strength. The array patterns erupted with brilliant spiritual light, sending beams of spiritual energy shooting toward the beast like sharp arrows. They struck the cracks on its body precisely, especially those around its neck and abdomen. The beast howled in pain and struggled wildly, but the power of the array patterns continued to assault it without pause. Under the barrage, the cracks in its body grew wider and wider, and black blood gushed from them. Its strength gradually waned, yet it still struggled desperately to the last. Mu Chen knew he could not give it a chance to recover. Once again, he summoned his spiritual energy, combining it with the power of the array patterns to launch a final attack. Amid a burst of dazzling light and a violent explosion, the beast finally crashed to the ground. Its enormous body struck the earth, throwing up a cloud of dust. His spiritual energy exhausted, Mu Chen also collapsed. Gazing at the beast's corpse, he was filled with relief at having survived the calamity. This crisis had nearly driven him into a hopeless corner, but through courage, wisdom, and that sliver of luck, he had defeated the powerful magical beast. Yet he knew the dangers of the Spirit Road were far from over. More challenges awaited him, and he had to grow stronger.
