Ch. 83Fighting Dumbledore

Cyrus, disguised as Tom Riddle, was discovered by Albus Dumbledore in the Shrieking Shack and fought him while trying to escape. Dumbledore blocked Cyrus’s Apparition and urged him to surrender to Azkaban.

  • Dumbledore revealed that he had recognized Cyrus beneath the Invisibility Cloak and demanded the cloak and other stolen items.
  • Cyrus removed the cloak, claimed that Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley were dead, and tried to unsettle Dumbledore.
  • Dumbledore attacked Cyrus with powerful magic, and Cyrus defended himself with a shield and several Killing Curses.
  • Dumbledore noticed that Cyrus’s Killing Curses seemed unusually weak, then conjured a fiery rope to bind him.
  • Cyrus turned the flames into a Fiendfyre snake and cast a spell at Dumbledore, who redirected the snake into an explosion.
  • Cyrus attempted to Apparate, but Dumbledore’s Anti-Apparition Jinx kept him trapped, and Dumbledore demanded his surrender.

Ch. 84My name is Cyrus

Cyrus tried to escape Dumbledore by using the basilisk as a distraction, but Dumbledore defeated the creature and captured him. As Dumbledore took the Diary and Diadem, Cyrus insisted that he was not Tom Riddle and asked to be called Cyrus.

  • Cyrus stopped attacking and used the Marauder's Map to draw Dumbledore's attention while asking how he had appeared in two places at once.
  • Dumbledore revealed that he had used a Time-Turner, leaving Cyrus to realize how thoroughly Dumbledore had anticipated his escape.
  • Cyrus released the basilisk and fled as it lunged at Dumbledore, but Fawkes blinded the creature while Dumbledore used magic to drag Cyrus back and bind him.
  • Dumbledore used a rooster's crow to kill the blinded basilisk, then took the Diary and Diadem from Cyrus.
  • Cyrus accepted his defeat and told Dumbledore that he was not Tom Riddle, asking to be called Cyrus.

Ch. 85A night of dim moonlight

Dumbledore defeated and arrested Cyrus, while Harry and the others returned safely with Ginny. Dumbledore then revealed that Mr. Riddle was Tom Riddle, the wizard known as Voldemort.

  • Dumbledore bound Cyrus, confiscated his wand and the magical objects, and took him away to be handed over to the Aurors.
  • Harry, Ron, Ginny, and Lockhart arrived at the Headmaster's Office, where Molly and Arthur embraced Ginny and thanked Harry and Ron.
  • Harry explained that Ginny had been unharmed in the Chamber and that they could not remember what object Mr. Riddle had inhabited.
  • Dumbledore returned the Marauder's Map to the twins, the cloak to Harry, and the harmless Diary to Ginny.
  • Dumbledore told Harry that Mr. Riddle had manipulated people and revealed that Tom Riddle was Voldemort.

Ch. 86The Wager

Fudge accepted Galleons from Lucius Malfoy, who arranged to visit Azkaban after hearing that Cyrus had been imprisoned. During the journey, Cyrus prepared to attempt an Animagus Transformation and escaped being caught without the ingredients he needed.

  • Fudge treated Cyrus’s arrest as a convenient public result, though he doubted the boy was the Tom Riddle from Hogwarts’s records.
  • Lucius Malfoy paid Fudge and asked whether he could visit Tom Riddle, then gained permission to visit Azkaban under the pretext of seeing relatives.
  • Narcissa met Lucius outside the Ministry, and they planned to request a visit to Sirius Black while concealing their real purpose.
  • Cyrus realized the prison carriage was nearing Azkaban and caught a mandrake leaf that fell from his hair.
  • Cyrus relied on his wager that Lucius would come to Azkaban, hoping the visit would help him obtain ingredients for an Animagus Transformation.

Ch. 87Hogwarts' Fifth House

Cyrus arrived at Azkaban and discovered that Dementors could drain his hope, while the prison’s lack of moonlight threatened his plan to become an Animagus. Dawlish locked him in a cell among the long-term prisoners, but Cyrus remained confident he would not break like them.

  • John Dawlish brought Cyrus to Azkaban, where the perpetual storm and lack of moonlight made Cyrus fear he could not complete the Animagus ritual.
  • Dementors drained Cyrus’s hope, but he recognized their influence and regained control of his thoughts.
  • Cyrus and Dawlish passed the graves and entered the prison, where the prisoners showed little interest in welcoming him.
  • Cyrus saw Bellatrix Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Antonin Dolohov, and other imprisoned Death Eaters, none of whom recognized him as Tom Riddle.
  • Dawlish locked Cyrus in a cell and predicted he would become like the other prisoners, but Cyrus rejected the warning and stayed confident.
