Before the roar in its throat could fully escape, the Flood Dragon was sent flying by a single sweep of the tail from a monster with an eagle's head and serpent's body. Hermione recognized it: Gorynych, a Dragon Monster from Slavic legend.
No sooner had Gorynych taken the Flood Dragon's place than it was rammed away by Watatsumi, which resembled some colossal beast of the deep sea. Then Chilong, elegant and hornless as it wound through the air, replaced Watatsumi, only to be replaced in turn by Yinglong, imposing in form with broad wings spread across its back.
One dragon phantom after another emerged from the rolling aura above the Dragon Nest. From Flood Dragons, Chilongs, Qiulongs, and Yinglongs; to Qiu Niu, Bi'an, Pu Lao, and Ya Zi; then to Red Dragons, Green Dragons, White Dragons, even Brass Dragons, Emerald Dragons, Shadow Dragons, and more from the Western dragon lineage. There were even many more ancient, distinctly regional dragon creatures mixed among them. Their varieties and forms were countless, covering nearly every classic dragon image listed in the Encyclopedia of Wizards.
They circled above the Dragon Nest, tossing their heads and lashing their tails as they darted endlessly through the air. One after another, they let out soundless roars and cries that shook the soul, then charged greedily and urgently toward the stone sphere within the Dragon Nest.
Every one of them looked as though it wanted to take possession of the stone sphere.
Yet the grayish-white shell coating the stone sphere seemed to have become the strongest magical barrier in the world. No matter how many dragon forms crashed into it, it remained immovable as a mountain, as though they had struck an invisible wall. Other than rings of nearly transparent magical ripples, the impacts produced no effect
