The night wind swept over the wall, carrying the dusty air of the wasteland. It stirred the gravel on the ground with a faint rustle.
On the wall, the Ogre skulls clacked their teeth as hard as they could to cheer on the Treants. But their voices, usually so clear and unnerving, sounded feeble and absurd beside the chaos of the battlefield.
Thin bands of white light descended from the Wizard Tower. Like jellyfish tentacles drifting through the sea, they floated toward the Treants outside the wall.
"Why have they stopped?"
The moment Hermione activated the final spell, Poseidon blurted out the question that had been weighing on her mind. She pointed at the Behemoth Monsters standing motionless beyond the camp, baffled. "If those big things had attacked while you were activating the spell, they might have uprooted your Wizard Tower by now—"
The jellyfish "tentacles" crossed the wall.
They seemed slow, but moved swiftly.
In an instant, they attached themselves to the Alchemy Battle Puppets, passed beyond their formation, and pressed on. The longest had already connected to the largest Treant at the very back.
"I don't know."
Hermione held her breath slightly, her eyes fixed on that Treant, but she still answered Little Fox's question patiently. "The Monster King might be plotting something. Captain Jiang might have cast some powerful magic over at Central Base—or perhaps these Monsters, being creatures of chaos, simply hate our Wizard Tower and the order it represents."
Ragdoll Fox nodded solemnly.
She thought the last reason was the most likely.
Back when they had straightened out the Earth Qi, the Monsters had fled the areas they had finished even without being driven away. Everyone had known then how much Monsters hated order.
But a plot by the Monster King sounded far more exciting.
