Background / History
Transmigration and the Luo Family
The original owner secluded himself to prolong his life, but an unstable Dao heart caused fatal cultivation deviation. Luo Yan transmigrated into the body and inherited its peak Quasi-Emperor cultivation. A century later, he still faced death from exhausted lifespan and descended the mountain to seek Immortal Medicine, temper his Dao heart through combat, and experience mortal life 1.
In Mo City, Luo Zongqi recognized him as the Luo Family’s ancestor. The family descended from the original owner’s elder brother, not from Luo Yan himself. It had founded Mo City to conceal and protect his seclusion site, maintaining a rotating vigil even after his Soul Lamp went out 121 years earlier. Luo Yan agreed to return with them, but warned that he had only three hundred years left unless he broke through or consumed a whole Immortal Medicine 2.
The family was being pressured by Yaoguang Holy Land over Luo Yixian’s Primordial Chaos Divine Physique. Luo Yan suspected that the Ruthless One Lineage intended to use her physique as source essence for the Yaoguang Holy Son. Before addressing the threat, he shared cultivation notes with the younger generation and investigated the shattered Time Mirror 2 5.
Tianxuan Holy Land, Six Thousand Years Earlier
Seeking the origin of time to repair the mirror, Luo Yan entered the River of Time. He obtained a portion of it, but a surge swept him into historical turbulence while the mirror became dormant. Stranded six thousand years before his own era, he rescued the young Wei Yi and accompanied him to Tianxuan Holy Land 5 6.
Luo Yan concealed his strength and used the Saintess Pursuers Organization to gather information about Nine Secrets: Xing. After an unsuccessful search of the Scripture Pavilion, he found the technique in the Thatched Cottage. There, he also reinforced the formations suppressing Taihua’s Divine Spirit Thought rather than release a being he believed would restore itself through a Dark Turmoil 7 13 14 15.
His warning about Tianxuan’s planned attack on the Desolate Forbidden Zone drew the Saintess’s attention. They became close confidants, but he refused her pleas to subdue the patriarch and prevent the expedition. His investigations had shown that indirect guidance could escape the Great Dao’s notice, whereas directly changing major historical outcomes could expose him to its punishment 9 16 18 19.
Before leaving, Luo Yan entrusted the Scripture Pavilion elder with a drop of River of Time water containing temporal imprints of Tianxuan’s disciples and elders, excluding those above the Saint realm. He hoped that the Saintess might eventually reach a realm capable of rescuing them. When his interference was exposed, he escaped through the Time Realm before the rules could erase him; only about ten days had passed in Mo City 20 21.
Confrontation with Yaoguang Holy Land
On returning, Luo Yan learned that Yaoguang had killed Luo clansmen, abducted Luo Yixian, and threatened to destroy the family. He rode Donkey to the holy land, killed its defenders, and demanded that Fang Jin appear to settle their encounter six thousand years earlier 21 23.
Fang Jin recognized him as the mysterious man whose presence at Tianxuan had been erased from history. Luo Yan rejected apologies alone, demanding punishment for the attackers, Yixian’s return, and compensation. He forced the Dragon-Patterned Black Gold Cauldron into slumber, split the holy land with a sword strike, and stripped the listed attackers of their remaining lifespans. Cui Jinhua surrendered the gourd containing Yixian and was crippled; Fang Jin suffered backlash and cultivation deviation before leaving in madness 24 25 26.
Yaoguang paid ten thousand jin of variant source. Luo Yan subsequently reformed the Luo Family’s internal systems, guided its young cultivators, and studied the Ji Family’s Void Mirror. By examining the original owner’s life through the Time Mirror, he discovered that the mirror was an Immortal Artifact acquired by chance, not a weapon personally forged by his predecessor 27 28.
Earth and Ye Fan
After twenty years of searching without finding the revived ancient emperors, Luo Yan settled on Earth. He became Ye Hai and Ye Fan’s neighbor, gave the boy a valuable jade charm, and later supplied his own blood essence to help Ye Fan overcome the Desolate Antiquity Taboo. Although he displayed supernatural powers, he insisted that they were practicing martial arts and should “believe in science” 29 30.
At Kunlun, the Time Mirror briefly awakened the Ruthless Great Emperor’s deceased elder brother through a broken Ghost Face Mask. Luo Yan accepted the youth’s request to care for his little sister, sensed the female emperor’s gaze, and fled with Donkey and Dragon Horse. Ye Fan later recalled that Luo Yan had also rescued him from kidnappers, crossing dozens of li in a single second 31 33.
Guardian of the Azure Emperor
Luo Yan intended to travel roughly twelve thousand years into the past, but arrived eighteen thousand years earlier instead. The mistake placed him before the Azure Emperor’s emergence from the Immortal Green Lotus. He waited for the transformation, claimed the medicine’s discarded remains, and offered to become the young emperor’s Dao guardian in exchange for future assistance 29 34 49.
He erased the traces of the Azure Emperor’s birth and brought him to Demon Star to cultivate as Wan Qing. Luo Yan allowed him to face dangerous opponents and deliberately arranged for news of his Immortal Medicine origins to reach Big Dipper, intending the resulting enemies to temper him. He intervened when necessary, including killing the Three Demon Sages who tried to devour him 34 38 39 41.
As his lifespan ran out, Luo Yan appeared to die but instead hid within the Time Mirror, refined the Green Lotus Medicine, and entered a deep slumber. The medicine produced his Second Lifetime Body, unexpectedly leaving him without cultivation. He converted his First Lifetime Body into a puppet to regain access to his former power 41 42.
Later, Luo Yan worked as a waiter at the Fresh Delicacies House and cared for the wandering Xiao Nannan. When the Time Mirror’s consciousness awakened, it warned that his alterations to history carried tremendous karma: its previous master, a True Immortal, had been permanently killed after disrupting another space-time 48 49.
Appearance
- Usual appearance: A strikingly handsome young man in his twenties, despite his original body being thousands of years old 1 27.
- Clothing: A Daoist robe, tied-up long hair, and a blue-green longsword at his waist when he descends the mountain 1.
- Aged form: Can release his deathly aura and appear as a decrepit old man, then restore his youthful appearance 2.
- Second Lifetime Body: A fair-skinned boy of seven or eight, almost identical to Luo Yan’s childhood self 42.
Personality
Luo Yan refuses to passively await death. His search for longevity is accompanied by a desire to travel, enjoy ordinary life, and test himself through combat. He retains a playful modern sensibility, furnishing his residences with sofas, televisions, and other inventions while teasing Ye Fan with deliberately implausible explanations for cultivation 1 16 28 30.
He favors caution and concealment when confronting historical rules or beings connected to Ruthless and Emperor Zun. Nevertheless, he is ruthless toward those who threaten people under his protection, rejecting Yaoguang’s attempt to settle its attacks through apologies alone. His restraint during the confrontation comes from concern about Ruthless’s buried lifetime body, not sympathy for the holy land 6 24 26.
As a mentor, Luo Yan values foundations, self-discovery, and adversity. He encourages Wei Yi to fight an opponent he expects him to lose against, and lets Wan Qing endure danger rather than solve every problem for him. He openly describes his guardianship of the Azure Emperor as an investment in the latter’s future 7 16 34 39.
Abilities & Skills
Time Manipulation
Luo Yan commands the power of time, supported by the Time Mirror.
- Lifespan removal: Ages enemies and drains their vitality; he kills Wei Yi’s tormentor by cutting away a hundred years and later strips the lifespans of Yaoguang’s attackers 7 26.
- Historical erasure: Family legends credit the original owner with killing enemies in their youth and cutting an entire span from the Starry Sky Ancient Road’s history 4.
- River of Time traversal: Travels between eras and gathers the origin of time, but requires the mirror’s protection 5 6.
- Temporal preservation: Stores strands of other people’s time in River of Time water; cannot imprint those above the Saint realm 20.
- Historical restrictions: In the Tianxuan era, the myriad Daos suppress him to less than one-tenth of his strength. Direct interference with important figures or events can draw the Heavenly Dao’s attention 6 11 18.
- Traversal limits: Without sufficient protection, the river’s time laws would consume him within an hour. The mirror also requires prolonged recovery after carrying him through time 29 49.
Peak Quasi-Emperor Combat
His original body possesses overwhelming strength compared with the experts active in his era.
- Kills Immortal Platform cultivators and a fully accomplished King with simple strikes 22 23.
- Gravely wounds a Great Power cultivator with an ordinary glance 23.
- Remains unharmed by a fully accomplished King’s God-Slaying Art 23.
- Uses the Time Mirror against the Dragon-Patterned Black Gold Cauldron and cleaves Yaoguang’s Quasi-Emperor formations with his sword 25 26.
- Can intercept concealed voice transmissions and directly examine another person’s thoughts 10 49.
Second Lifetime Body and Puppet Control
The Green Lotus Medicine grants Luo Yan a new physical existence rather than restoring his cultivation normally.
- Possesses physical strength and toughness comparable to a Great Emperor’s 42.
- Cannot open a Bitter Sea, cultivate, or independently wield magical power 42.
- Enters the puppet body’s Bitter Sea to access peak Quasi-Emperor cultivation 42.
- Suffers fluctuating divine sense, ranging from near peak Quasi-Emperor strength to mortal-like weakness; the puppet can abruptly stop moving 42.
Nine Secrets: Xing
- Records the technique from the stone stele in Tianxuan’s Thatched Cottage 14.
- Seeks it because its highest development reaches the domain of time; the provided account does not establish that he masters it to that level 6 15.
Teaching, Artifact Work, and Construction
- Explains cultivation foundations and distributes the original owner’s cultivation insights to the Luo Family’s younger generation 5 7.
- Refines a disguise treasure that blocks even a Saint King’s attempts to inspect his identity 13.
- Repairs and reinforces the formations suppressing Taihua’s Divine Spirit Thought 15.
- Creates modern-style furnishings, appliances, and residences, including a three-story villa on Demon Star 16 34.
