Background / History
Early Career
The Crime Alley shooting was Gordon’s first case after joining the police. He photographed the eight-year-old Bruce Wayne, the sole witness, and promised to catch his parents’ killer. Gordon fulfilled that promise; the murderer was tried and executed, but Bruce showed no satisfaction at the outcome 9.
Bruce’s question—why criminals still existed if Gotham had police—stayed with Gordon for years. He eventually concluded that police could punish criminals, while people with Bruce’s resources could help prevent new ones from emerging. He admired Wayne Enterprises’ charities, addiction treatment, orphan care, affordable insurance, and student loans 9.
Gordon met Barbara when he was around William’s age. For their first date at a French restaurant, he borrowed an ill-fitting tailcoat from Bullock because he could not afford formal clothing 10.
Batman’s Disappearance
Gordon once argued fiercely with Bullock over whether vigilantism and extrajudicial punishment undermined justice. After Batman disappeared, however, Gordon deeply missed the lower crime rates associated with his presence. He prayed for Batman during the first months of his absence, then tried to focus on protecting Gotham without him 2.
Batman vanished a year before William’s investigation, while looking into the Mad Hatter. A searchlight Batman had proposed installing on the police station roof remained in storage. Gordon and Bullock continued pursuing leads despite declining morale and widespread absenteeism among detectives 2.
Appearance
Gordon is tall and powerfully built, with a recognizable mustache. William estimates his age at thirty-five or thirty-six and notices that he looks younger than the Gordon familiar to him from comics 2.
- Clothing: Wears a black leather police jacket covered in creases and cracks 2.
- Signs of exhaustion: Develops dark circles after suppressing a violent protest and spending a sleepless night worrying about William’s secrets 12.
- Injuries: Suffers a bleeding forehead in the car bombing and loses a molar after fighting Dares Hob 10 11.
Personality
Gordon remains committed to police work even when much of the department withdraws from its duties. He recognizes William’s determination as resembling his younger self and hopes the rookie will resist Gotham’s corrupting influence 2 8.
His protectiveness is immediate and physical: he checks William for injuries during the Zsasz rescue operation and attacks the masked bomber threatening him. Nevertheless, admiration does not erase suspicion. He initially keeps William outside the Batman investigation and later loses sleep over the young officer’s unexplained knowledge 2 6 10 12.
Gordon refuses Wolf’s bribe and rejects Dares’s proposed compensation-and-psychiatric-assessment arrangement, even though he badly needs money for his destroyed car and dental treatment. His integrity also stops him from eavesdropping on William’s private conversation with Dares 11 12.
His legal principles become increasingly strained. Before the bombing, he tolerates some gang activity to preserve stability; afterward, anger drives him to attack Dares without backup. He also keeps Dares detained for another day and subjects him to freezing air conditioning without questioning him. By the operation against Harold Wayne, Gordon knowingly participates in an illegal abduction, believing ordinary procedure cannot secure justice against Wayne Enterprises’ powerful figures 11 16 39.
Abilities & Skills
Police Investigation
Gordon is an experienced investigator who maintains case records, evaluates evidence, and checks witnesses’ identities 2 9 41.
- Recognizes the professional quality of William’s crime-scene deductions and questions where he learned them 2.
- Knows Gotham offenders personally, including Angie’s extortion history and Wolf’s smuggling activities 12.
- Investigates a fatal driving case and reports that its file names Bruce Wayne as the driver 29.
- Locates the Wayne double’s family and obtains a photograph supporting his claimed identity 41.
Marksmanship
Gordon is explicitly described as an expert marksman 10.
- Believes he could stop Dares’s fleeing car by shooting a tire, but refrains because a ricochet might injure a bystander 10.
- Shoots out Dares’s car-door lock while attempting an arrest 11.
Close-Quarters Combat and Physical Resilience
Gordon can recover quickly from injury and fight aggressively, but is not invincible 10 11.
- Gets back up after a nearby car explosion and lands two kicks on the masked attacker 10.
- Vaults a guardrail and repeatedly reengages Dares after being thrown from his car 11.
- Is disarmed and decisively beaten by Dares, a former Black Hawk special-operations soldier; William ends the fight with a stun gun 11.
Equipment / Vehicles
- Service firearms — Checks a revolver’s ammunition before dangerous operations and draws his service weapon at the roadblock 2 10 11.
- Riot shield and visor — Used while entering Zsasz’s hideout, where he suspects William’s call might have been coerced 6.
- Notebook and pen — Used to record William’s assessment of the Bowery Street murder 2.
- Handcuffs — Carried at the small of his back 12.
- Personal car — Lent to William for his Wayne Manor visit, then destroyed by Dares’s bomb. Gordon’s insurer had entered bankruptcy protection, leaving him without transportation while still owing bank payments 9 10.
- Rental car — His replacement costs twenty dollars per day, excluding fuel 16.
Relationships
- William Hans / William Maroni — Junior colleague and investigative ally. Gordon values his ability and determination but worries about his secrets and apparent dealings with powerful suspects. He offers to investigate Norman privately so William need not endanger himself 2 8 12 29 37.
- Bullock — Longtime police partner. They disagree over vigilantism but work together to find Batman; Bullock also lends Gordon clothing for his first date with Barbara 2 10.
- Bruce Wayne / Batman — Gordon handled Bruce’s parents’ murder and later worked with Batman without knowing they were the same person. He initially believed Wayne Enterprises supplied equipment to a separate, possibly ex-special-forces vigilante 9 12.
- Stuart — The amnesiac fighter William presents as Batman. Gordon worries about his safety, helps explain Bruce’s childhood, and joins the effort to restore his identity. Stuart is later revealed not to be Batman 13 15 37 45.
- Norman Steele — Superior whom Gordon initially considers trustworthy because of his anti-gang efforts and officer-friendly policies. William’s secret assignment raises concerns about Norman’s corruption; Norman later blocks Gordon from questioning William 17 29 36.
- Barbara — A cherished romantic connection; recalling their first date brings a rare smile to his face 10.
- Dares Hob — Bombing suspect and adversary who destroys Gordon’s car and beats him during arrest. Gordon refuses to settle the matter through the lawyer’s proposed arrangement 10 11.
- Wolf — Underground boxing-club owner Gordon previously arrested for smuggling videotapes. Wolf remains frightened of him and unsuccessfully attempts to bribe him 12.
