Cheng Tian was out in front, with the Raticate pack behind him. A deadly chase unfolded through the forest.
Cheng Tian ran for his life. Whenever he glanced back, the Raticate pack pursuing him spurred him to run even faster.
"Holy crap, you just won't stop haunting me!" Cheng Tian gritted his teeth and swiftly dodged a rock half the size of a person.
The Raticate behind him did no such thing. Light shone from their leader's front teeth as it opened its mouth and bit down on the rock.
Hyper Fang!
Boom! The rock shattered into pieces. Hearing the noise behind him, Cheng Tian shivered. There was no question about it-if that move hit him, taking off an arm would be child's play...
Cheng Tian chose not to let Yamper out. For one thing, the enemies had strength in numbers. For another, Yamper's level was too low to beat them.
Seriously, there had to be a limit to fighting above your level! Making a level 13 fight a level 34-what was that if not courting death?
Besides, Yamper had short legs and stood low to the ground. Running away would definitely be awkward for him. Cheng Tian was better off keeping him in his Poké Ball and carrying him as he ran.
"Pant... pant... I'm dying here. I can't keep running like this. They'll catch me for sure."
A human body couldn't compare to a Pokémon's, after all. Cheng Tian had exhausted his strength, while the Raticate clearly had plenty to spare. The distance between them shrank little by little.
What do I do? What do I do? What am I supposed to do? They'll catch me at this rate.
Suddenly, Cheng Tian spotted a patch of woods ahead, its tree trunks densely covered in yellow cocoons.

But unless he escaped his current predicament first, everything else was just empty talk!
To hell with it. I'm going all in!
Cheng Tian sped up again and ran toward those woods. Upon reaching a large tree inside them, he was panting hard, but he didn't keep running.
Instead, he stopped, took out his Poké Ball, and summoned Yamper.
"Raticate!" The Raticate leader soon caught up with its pack. Looking at Cheng Tian, who had stopped running, it wore the delighted expression of a cat toying with a mouse.
The sight made Cheng Tian's temper flare.
You really fucking think I'm an easy target!
Seeing Cheng Tian summon Yamper only deepened the contempt in the Raticate leader's eyes.
What a joke. Does he think this little fellow can stand against me? Raticate looked mockingly at Yamper's small body. Something that size couldn't withstand even one Hyper Fang.
"You forced me into this." Cheng Tian gritted his teeth. "Yamper, use Thunder Shock on the cocoons in the tree!"
"Yamp!" Electricity surged over Yamper's body, and he sent a bolt crashing into several cocoons.
The cocoons let out cries of pain and fell one after another. Anyone taking a close look would have turned pale with alarm.
The yellow cocoons falling to the ground were Kakuna, the evolved form of the Weedle Cheng Tian had encountered earlier.
Kakuna usually appeared in groups, staying together as they awaited evolution. Wherever a group of Kakuna appeared, their final evolved forms were almost certainly nearby.
The Bee Pokémon, Beedrill! These Pokémon were tyrants of the forest. Although Bug-type Pokémon generally had short lifespans, their terrifying numbers made up for it.
Swarms of Beedrill would always be near the Kakuna, protecting them. Once the Kakuna were attacked, the entire swarm would rise against the attacker! That was why no one dared provoke them.
Sure enough, once the Kakuna fell to the ground, it was as though someone had stirred up a hornet's nest. A buzzing immediately rose from deep within the woods.
Cheng Tian chuckled, swiftly scooped up Yamper, and ducked into a clump of bushes. Seeing his movement, the Raticate leader had intended to attack, but a moment later, its pupils contracted in terror.
A dense swarm of furious Beedrill flew out of the woods with their poisonous stingers thrust forward.
Who was blind enough to dare provoke us?
Hidden in the bushes, Cheng Tian suddenly saw his mind fill with densely packed, nearly identical information panels.

They really were packed together. Cheng Tian made a rough estimate: there were at least sixty, led by one particular Beedrill.

Cheng Tian was astonished. This Beedrill actually had the Hidden Ability Sniper. No wonder she was the leader!
At that moment, the Beedrill swarm stared at the Kakuna on the ground in utter fury.
Aside from their natural enemies, the Spearow flock, who dared provoke them like this? The Raticate leader clearly wanted to explain.
But the enraged Beedrill wouldn't listen. They raised their poisonous stingers and stabbed at the Raticate and Rattata.
The clash quickly began. There was still a substantial gap between the strongest fighters on either side: one was level 31, while the other was level 34.
Among the ordinary fighters, however, the difference wasn't nearly as clear. And there were twice as many Beedrill as Rattata! Almost every Rattata had to fight two Beedrill.
Raticate wasn't having an easy time either. Its level might be higher, but its opponent could fly!
The Beedrill leader first used Agility twice in succession, greatly boosting her speed. Then she began kiting Raticate. She unleashed Pin Missile again and again, while Raticate could do nothing but dodge. Despite its level advantage, it didn't have a single ranged move capable of hitting her.
Relying on her speed, Beedrill suddenly swooped in while Raticate struggled to cope. She used Poison Sting on top of Twineedle, driving her stingers hard into its body.
"Raticate!" Raticate cried out in pain. A purple tinge spread across its brow as it became poisoned.
Enraged, Raticate's front teeth shone as it tried to bite Beedrill. But with Beedrill's current speed, it couldn't get its teeth into her at all.
The remaining Rattata were even worse off. Each one faced attacks from two Beedrill and had little ability to hold them back.
The Raticate pack soon fell into danger. Watching the Rattata go down one after another, the Raticate leader burned with rage.
It's all that human's fault! If I find him, I'll bite his head off!
It had to be said that, although Cheng Tian's attempt to provoke a fight had been risky, it had produced outstanding results. He had successfully escaped the Raticate pack.
"Now's the time to get out of here!" Cheng Tian dared not delay. If the Raticate lost, or a few Beedrill discovered him, he would be in danger.
With Yamper in tow, Cheng Tian crouched and crept toward the edge of the woods, not daring to make a sound.
After walking a little over two hundred meters, the sounds of battle no longer seemed so close. Cheng Tian breathed a slight sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness. They didn't spot us." Just as he was about to hurry away, another Beedrill suddenly flew out of the bushes in front of him.
Cheng Tian's face darkened. What kind of rotten luck was this, running straight into one? He hurriedly ordered, "Yamper, Charge!"
The Beedrill before him wasn't very high-level, only level 12. It froze briefly at the sight of Cheng Tian, then grew excited.
Another one escaped over here!
It took a fighting stance and brandished its twin stingers. At the same time, it let out a buzzing cry, trying to tell its companions that one had slipped through the net.
No, I can't let it alert them! Cheng Tian was frantic. If it sent word, he might find himself pursued by both the Beedrill and the Raticate!
Just then, two clumps of white foam suddenly flew out of a large tree! One struck Beedrill's mouth, and the other struck its wings.
The sound immediately died away. Beedrill lost its balance in the air and fell to the ground. It tried to shake the foam off, but failed. The foam was extremely sticky!
Cheng Tian froze. What's going on? Where did that foam come from? He finally looked toward the large tree it had flown out of. The leaves rustled, but there was nothing there.
Before he could think any further, Beedrill began wobbling into the air again. Of course, Cheng Tian couldn't let it get its wish. "Yamper, quick, use Thunder Shock!"
"Yamp!" Yamper released a surge of electricity that struck Beedrill. In the end, Beedrill failed to take flight and fell back down.
"Quick Attack, then Nuzzle!" Yamper shot forward and slammed into Beedrill, fine currents of electricity streaming from his cheeks. Beedrill was paralyzed.
"All right, let's go!" Cheng Tian didn't linger another moment. Taking Yamper with him, boy and dog swiftly fled those woods.
