Background / History
Intelligence career and the Port Mafia
Santoka Taneda sent Ango undercover into the Port Mafia, both because he valued Ango’s abilities and because the assignment offered a fast route to promotion. Its success helped Ango become the second-in-command of the Special Division for Unusual Powers in Yokohama while still young 74.
Ango’s friendships with Osamu Dazai and Sakunosuke Oda were genuine despite his covert mission. He nevertheless bore responsibility for events surrounding Oda’s death and the deaths of five innocent children. When Oda appears among the viewers, all three acknowledge that their friendship cannot simply return to what it was. Ango says he would rather have surrendered his promotion and turned back time 74 84.
His respect for the dead predates his work as a Secret Keeper: he had compiled details of casualties from the Dragon Head Conflict and remained unable to dismiss those losses as acceptable 80.
Becoming Prophet’s counselor
In the depicted apocalypse cycle, Ango works at the underground installation housing Prophet, the source of humanity’s rapid technological advances. The Human Alliance recruits him as a monitor after repeatedly reviewing his intelligence background and ability, partly to prevent Japan’s government from using him to obtain Prophet’s secrets independently 71.
Initially, Ango watches surveillance footage without permission to meet Prophet. He is later selected as one of fewer than ten counselors, despite having studied psychology only as a minor. His duties include assessing Prophet’s mental condition and probing for concealed information. Extensive security checks govern every visit, and information about Prophet cannot be written down or stored in files 71.
Prophet’s unexpectedly personal response to their first meeting leads Ango’s superiors to increase their contact time. While others assume this attention must have strategic significance, Ango suspects Prophet is lonely. During their fourth meeting, Prophet secretly writes the name An Xinyi on his palm 72.
Ango begins resisting instructions to exploit every conversational opening for intelligence. He delays intrusive questions, sympathizes with An Xinyi’s total lack of privacy, and offers sincere trust rather than treating their conversations solely as assignments 73 74.
Joining the Secret Keepers
After a prophecy leaves An Xinyi gravely exhausted, Chris reassigns Ango to the secret keeper project. When An Xinyi’s condition deteriorates further, Ango tries to stop the emergency removal but yields to Chris’s insistence that it is an order. His glasses fall and crack as he gives up resisting 74 76.
Following several days of depression, Ango resolves to rise high enough to gain information and avoid being powerless again. He joins the Secret Keepers as Owl, receiving survival training from Fox. The training reverses his instincts as an intelligence agent: noticing, remembering, and investigating too much can expose him to supernatural corruption 77 78.
On his first mission, Ango becomes trapped staring at a mural inside a sealed house where twenty-seven people have disappeared. Fox breaks his gaze with a blow and explains that the mural absorbs those who look at it. Later, when Fox becomes corrupted, Ango blocks an evil god’s name from entering his awareness, uses a stun baton and pendant to restore Fox’s clarity briefly, and witnesses Fox’s final prayer answered by silver-white flames 78 79.
Ango survives repeated losses, trains newer Investigators, and eventually advances from field operative to administrator. After Mountain Rabbit’s death, he uses Fallen Theory on the deceased Investigator’s belongings to preserve his personal memories rather than let his life disappear behind an identification number 80.
Discovering An Xinyi’s repeated deaths
Upon meeting Prophet again, Ango notices that the wrist number has changed from 217 to 218. He conceals his immediate shock but chooses to demand an explanation despite the threat of arrest 80 81.
Chris takes him to a facility containing numerous An Xinyi clones, including number 219, and reveals that An Xinyi has already died 218 times. Ango angrily challenges whether those deaths were truly voluntary. Chris counters that other Secret Keepers have also sacrificed their lives, suffered contamination, and been erased from records. Ango comes to recognize the courage of people resisting humanity’s annihilation, even while remaining deeply distressed by their choices 81.
“The Lost Promise”
After Chris departs on a fatal mission, Ango takes An Xinyi outside the base to see the real night sky. An Xinyi uses Prophet’s authority to make the excursion permissible and keep their guards at a distance. Ango asks what An Xinyi personally wants, separating the person from the duty of saving humanity; the answer is an ordinary life in a future that no longer needs Prophet 82.
An Xinyi confirms that humanity cannot defeat the beings threatening it and that those directing the resistance already know this. Ango nevertheless affirms that resistance has meaning: humanity’s struggle cannot be judged solely by whether it succeeds 83.
Before the guards return An Xinyi to confinement, Ango promises to answer whenever his friend asks for help and to stay alive until then. Temporarily imprisoned and questioned afterward, he realizes that An Xinyi has been protecting him throughout his dangerous investigations. He becomes a devoted believer in the Lord of the Sea of Hearts and vows to become someone An Xinyi can depend on. The cycle ends under the title “The Lost Promise,” followed by “Record overwritten” 84.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Black hair and obsidian-colored eyes 80 82.
- Glasses: Round glasses, described as unfashionable in the café interlude; he frequently adjusts or removes them 73 85.
- Professional dress: Suit, bow tie, meticulously combed hair, polished leather shoes, and a briefcase 71.
- Visible fatigue: Pale features and pronounced dark circles during emotionally demanding periods 82 85.
Personality
Ango is diligent and professionally trained to carry out assignments without questioning them. He prepares carefully for counseling work and ordinarily conceals his emotions, particularly in front of superiors, subordinates, former associates, and enemies 71 85.
His obedience is limited by conscience. He cannot reduce human lives to convenient numbers or accept exploitation merely because it serves an institution. Although he understands the reasoning behind harsh decisions, he remains emotionally unable to endorse them and will bend rules to preserve a person’s dignity 74 77 80.
Ango’s ambition grows from helplessness rather than a desire for prestige. His personal ideal is modest: work as an ordinary civil servant, contribute to his country, drink in his spare time, and have two or three friends. An Xinyi values precisely this contradictory humanity—his fear, guilt, selfish wishes, and continued effort to become better 77 82 84.
Despite possessing an exceptional intelligence-gathering ability, Ango does not enjoy prying into others’ private histories. His friendship with An Xinyi centers on offering help, not claiming that he can “save” someone whose burdens he cannot fully bear 84.
Abilities & Skills
Fallen Theory
An intelligence-gathering ability that allows Ango to recover memories from belongings 71 80.
- Reads Mountain Rabbit’s possessions to preserve memories of the deceased Investigator’s life 80.
- Makes him suitable for intelligence work and contributes to his selection as Prophet’s monitor 71.
- Becomes hazardous in Secret Keeper investigations, where acquiring knowledge can itself cause corruption. Ango’s use of it to remember fallen Investigators exposes him to dangers they encountered 80 84.
Intelligence and counseling
- Experienced in undercover operations, observation, and compiling intelligence dossiers 71 74.
- Reviews his limited psychology education before meeting Prophet rather than relying solely on his ability 71.
- Develops enough emotional control to conceal his reaction to Prophet’s changed wrist number 80.
- Advances into administration after becoming one of the finest Investigators 80.
Supernatural survival training
- Learns to avoid looking, listening, recalling, or thinking about dangerous beings unnecessarily 78.
- Blocks his sight and hearing to prevent an evil god’s name from entering his awareness 79.
- Uses a high-voltage stun baton and holy pendant against Fox’s corruption 79.
- Teaches recruits to prioritize survival over heroism 80.
Divine protection
- An Xinyi’s protection explains his survival despite repeatedly violating investigative taboos and using Fallen Theory dangerously 84.
- The final promise protects him even from time and old age, but is dependent on An Xinyi’s continued existence 84.
- This protection belongs to the depicted counterpart; the viewing Ango is not shown acquiring it 84 85.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Silver spiral pendant: Holy emblem of the Lord of the Sea of Hearts, supplied by Fox. Provides limited warnings; Fox’s pendant briefly restores his clarity during corruption. Ango later keeps the silver amulet Fox left behind 78 79 84.
- High-voltage stun baton: Secret Keeper equipment used to stun the corrupted Fox 79.
- Briefcase: Carried during visits to Prophet’s heavily secured base 71.
- Round glasses and lens cloth: Frequently handled while thinking, concealing emotion, or composing himself 73 80 83.
Relationships
- An Xinyi / Prophet — Begins as Ango’s monitored subject and becomes his friend. Ango seeks to preserve An Xinyi’s individuality, promises help, and eventually becomes a devoted believer and prospective pillar of support 72 82 84.
- Osamu Dazai — Former friend with whom Ango retains a deep, unspoken trust despite their estrangement. Dazai needles him over Prophet’s attention but ultimately admires his resolve; later, he invites Ango for a drink at Lupin Bar 72 80 85 97.
- Sakunosuke Oda — Friend whose death remains a source of guilt. Their reunion cannot erase the past, but Oda continues to express concern and admiration for Ango 74 78 80.
- Santoka Taneda — Superior who arranged Ango’s Port Mafia infiltration and later questions whether the promotion justified its personal cost 74.
- Chris — Direct superior at Prophet’s base. Their relationship becomes strained over An Xinyi’s treatment, although Ango acknowledges that Chris also faces desperate circumstances 74 81 82.
- Fox — Secret Keeper mentor who saves Ango from the mural and teaches him survival principles. Ango mourns him without ever learning his real name 78 79.
- Mountain Rabbit — Investigator trained by Ango. After his death, Ango preserves his memories through Fallen Theory 80.
Story Role / Major Arcs
- Early screenings: Ango initially stays inconspicuous and searches his recollection of Special Division records for information about An Xinyi 3.
- Prophet cycle: His counterpart’s perspective reveals Prophet’s confinement, the Secret Keepers’ work, and the numbered clones sustaining An Xinyi’s repeated sacrifices 71 78 81.
- Interlude: The viewing Ango understands his counterpart’s wish to help a friend while carefully concealing his own reaction. Elsewhere, An Xinyi remembers Ango as someone whose essential nature remains unchanged across apocalypses 85.
- Later screenings: Ango rejects Dazai’s description of An Xinyi’s companions as parasites. He argues that the people An Xinyi saved also supported and shaped An Xinyi, helping him continue through successive cycles 97.
