"First, there was a patient last night, and Military Doctor Chen actually forgot to do a skin test before giving him penicillin. He had an allergic reaction, and they almost couldn't save him!"
Song Ning was startled too. Forgetting their earlier topic, she pressed, "Then what happened?"
"Director Sun was furious, and so was Captain Feng. They were calling everywhere for help, and an Assault Boat came in the middle of the night to take the patient out! A penicillin allergy can kill someone outright! And we don't have all the equipment here! The patient only had an upper respiratory infection-pneumonia at worst-but it nearly cost him his life. Think how bad that looks!"
Song Ning frowned. Doing a skin test before administering penicillin was basic knowledge. What kind of military doctor made such an elementary mistake?
"What was the second thing?" Song Ning asked.
Zheng Chang'an chuckled and was just about to speak when someone called anxiously outside:
"Doctor Song-is Doctor Song here?"
Song Ning got up and lifted the door curtain.
Doctor Zhou was looking around outside. At the sight of Song Ning, relief immediately crossed Doctor Zhou's face. "Hurry! Doctor Feng's been looking everywhere for you! He needs you to save someone!"
Song Ning paused for only a moment before immediately following.
Zheng Chang'an chased after her. "Ning! Ning! That's what I was about to tell you!"
Without slowing, Song Ning turned to glance at Zheng Chang'an.
Zheng Chang'an ran behind her, calling:
"It's Company Commander Lu! He developed a high fever last night! I'm guessing this is about him too!"
There was no need to guess. It was Lu Changqing.
Apparently, Chen Yuting had made a point of cleaning his wound again last night. As a result, the wound, which had already begun to heal, inevitably bled heavily again. The anesthesia problem remained unresolved too, leaving Lu Changqing screaming in pain. By the time the ordeal reached the suturing stage, he had already passed out.
That would have been bad enough.
The trouble was that Lu Changqing began running a fever in the middle of the night. Unlike his earlier low-grade fever, his temperature shot straight up to 39.8 degrees Celsius.
At that point, the Assault Boat carrying the patient with the penicillin allergy had only just left. Getting another patient out anytime soon was impossible.
The news Zheng Chang'an had received then was that the doctors were still trying to bring his fever down.
He hadn't expected them to be desperately seeking help everywhere so soon.
When Song Ning arrived, Doctor Feng was waiting at the door, looking haggard.
The instant he saw her, he pulled her inside and said urgently:
"Hurry! His blood pressure's dropped, his heart rate's too slow, and he's already in shock! Find a way to save him!"
Lu Changqing had been carried into the inner room and screened off from the other patients with a curtain.
He lay there, his face ashen and his breathing faint.
She hurried over and lifted Lu Changqing's eyelids, her other hand already settling on his pulse.
A moment later, Song Ning's expression grew grave too. She quickly took out her Silver Needles, disinfecting them as she gave instructions:
"Take off the patient's shirt and roll up his trouser legs. Hurry!"
Before anyone else could react, Zheng Chang'an stepped forward to follow her instructions.
The others nearby hurried over to help as well.
One by one, the Silver Needles pierced the major acupuncture points on Lu Changqing's head, upper body, and limbs. At first glance, with all those densely packed needles... he looked like a hedgehog that had lost its spines.
Everyone watched, not daring to make a sound.
There were seventy-two Silver Needles in the set. When she had almost none left, Song Ning said:
"Prepare 1,000 milliliters of 0.9% Sodium Chloride Solution. Start administering it intravenously in fifteen minutes. Also, give him one million units of penicillin intramuscularly within the hour!"
Once again, Zheng Chang'an answered immediately. "All right! I'll get it ready!"
Only then did the doctor beside him react. "I'll go! Doctor Zheng, you assist Doctor Song!"
Fifteen minutes later, Song Ning removed the Silver Needles and checked Lu Changqing's pulse again. She told Doctor Feng, who had been standing anxiously beside her the whole time:
"His heart rate has recovered! His blood pressure should be back up too! You can continue with standard treatment from here!"
Doctor Feng hurriedly picked up his stethoscope and listened to Lu Changqing's chest before finally letting out a long breath.
"Thank goodness you were here! We don't have any emergency equipment at all! That was far too close!"
Doctor Feng raised a hand to wipe the sweat from his forehead, then told the man beside him:
"Chief of Staff Xu! Thank goodness! He's out of danger!"
Chief of staff?!
Only then did Song Ning notice that, besides Director Sun, several unfamiliar faces were standing nearby.
Chief of Staff Xu gave Song Ning a small nod. "Thank you for your hard work, Doctor Xiao Song! Let's talk outside!"
They headed out while another doctor hooked Lu Changqing up to the IV that had been prepared.
The temporary disaster relief command post was right next door.
Song Ning followed the group over and only then saw Chen Yuting sitting in the main room.
Her face was pale, her eyes red and swollen, and her once-neat twin braids had become disheveled.
Nurse Xiao Zhang was keeping her company.
"Yu Ting! You're awake? Are you all right?" Chief of Staff Xu asked.
Chen Yuting lowered her head and bit her lower lip without speaking.
"Military Doctor Chen! Don't worry! Company Commander Lu is out of danger! It's all thanks to Doctor Xiao Song!" Doctor Feng stepped forward to reassure her too.
Only then did Song Ning learn that when Lu Changqing had gone into shock, Chen Yuting had fainted from fright as well.
Chief of Staff Xu turned to look around, then said to Director Sun:
"Sorry for the trouble, but could you ask all the comrades from the medical team to come over?"
Hearing this, Doctor Feng immediately beckoned to the team members outside and called them all in.
Chief of Staff Xu straightened his uniform and addressed everyone in a solemn voice:
"I am Xu Jian, chief of staff of the 7th Regiment, 13th Army, Southwest Military Region. Comrade Chen Yuting's inappropriate words and actions last night had an extremely damaging impact and caused you all harm. Now, on behalf of every officer and soldier in the 7th Regiment, I apologize to you!"
With that, he snapped to attention and raised his hand in salute.
Director Sun rubbed his hands together in extreme discomfort and glanced at Doctor Feng, who hurriedly spoke:
"It's all right! It's all right! There's no-no need to go that far! Military Doctor Chen was anxious and upset over a family matter. We understand! Well... our medical team members all returned to work this morning too..."
The timing had been unfortunate. When Chen Yuting came to make trouble yesterday, everyone had already worked through a full day and night without rest. They were exhausted and sleepy, drained both physically and mentally. When she added fuel to the fire, they had all walked off the job together...
They hadn't expected the incident to reach the military region's leadership, much less bring someone here overnight!
The doctors who had come here all had a strong sense of duty. After a good night's rest, they had voluntarily reported for work this morning.
Even if they were angry, none of them would truly abandon the people.
Chief of Staff Xu turned back to Chen Yuting and said sternly:
"Comrade Chen Yuting, as a soldier, your conduct has seriously damaged the image of our military. Now you must personally apologize to the comrades of the medical team and obtain their forgiveness!"
Before you continue
