Background / History

Zhou Yuanhang is the younger son of Elder Zhou and Professor Yang. He has an older brother, Zhou Qihang, and an older sister. Already an engineer as a young man, he works in Shanghai City when his mother calls him home to seek Song Ning’s help with his father’s condition 47 48 146.

His older brother commanded Unit 331, an elite military unit tasked with protecting Blue Shield and the country’s researchers. In 1974, Zhou Qihang, his wife Tian Yingxue, and their young son died confronting Ghost. According to Gu Zheng, Yuanhang subsequently shut himself away for a year, refusing to speak or see anyone. After Elder Zhou recovered from a six-month hospitalization, the family moved from Capital City to Rong City to escape reminders of their loss 281 560.

The family’s sacrifices become a major obstacle to investigating Yuanhang. Gu Zheng, Lei Ming, and others regard the Zhou family as Ghost’s sworn enemies, while Song Ning repeatedly struggles to reconcile her suspicions with their history. Yuanhang is eventually exposed as a criminal who has maintained a courteous public identity while directing a hidden organization 433 497 502 590 676 682.

Appearance

Zhou Yuanhang is tall and slim, with fair skin, handsome features, and a refined, scholarly appearance. He resembles Professor Yang more than his soldierly older brother does 47 145 146 560.

  • Usual presentation: Neatly dressed and gentlemanly; wears a blue shirt during his intervention in Zhou Yunzhi’s dispute with Song Ning 145 260.
  • During periods of distress: Appears haggard, with bloodshot eyes after Cheng Hui’s death and at Zhou Weide’s funeral 274 326.
  • Disguised appearance: Uses masks to adopt rough, darkened skin and wrinkles, then changes again into an entirely different man in his thirties 673 678.

Personality

In public, Yuanhang appears polite, patient, and exceptionally even-tempered. Song Ning notices that he neither argues nor becomes angry when Jiang Chengshi interferes with his attempts to court her. He presents himself as grateful for her honesty and willing to remain friends after she rejects romance 150 151.

His attentiveness can nevertheless become intrusive. He insists on remaining with Song Ning in hospital, repeatedly seeks her company during the overseas delegation, and continues offering assistance after she asks for distance. He later admits to himself that his impatience has frightened her away 152 260 262.

Once exposed, his manner becomes cruel, possessive, and openly threatening. He restrains and drugs Song Ning, threatens Gu Zheng’s life, and alternates between treating her as a bargaining tool and proposing that they start a new life together after Gu Zheng dies 675 676 677.

Yuanhang describes his prolonged deception as a game that has become boring. In captivity, he boasts that killing is easy and that his victims include soldiers, researchers, people who obstructed him, and people he simply disliked. His final declaration that he has tired of living precedes his suicide; the supplied events do not establish a complete explanation for his betrayal of his family’s ideals 676 682 683.

Abilities & Skills

Engineering and Research

Yuanhang is an engineer who participates in research work in Capital City. Yang Ye notes that his research field overlaps with Kurt’s, a detail considered during the investigation into the overseas killings 146 274 528.

  • Joins the expanded delegation visiting Siemens for technical exchanges 260.
  • Comes to Capital City during efforts to overcome a research project’s technical hurdles 528.
  • His precise engineering specialty is not identified in the supplied passages.

Disguise and Impersonation

Yuanhang uses thin masks, clothing changes, and convincing performances to move under assumed identities 673 677 678.

  • Poses as “Comrade Ma,” a mountain villager returning home with his sick wife 673.
  • Disguises Song Ning as “Xiuying” and presents a medical record to explain her inability to speak 676.
  • Later claims to be Yang Dachuan’s third son from Yangjue Village; a local resident appears to recognize the assumed couple 679.
  • Changes both his and Song Ning’s disguises again before leaving the underground hideout 678.
  • Limit: Gu Zheng recognizes Song Ning by her eyes despite her mask and impaired movement 676.

Deception and Tactical Planning

Yuanhang sustains his public identity long enough that even repeated suspicions fail to produce immediate proof. Song Ning acknowledges his intelligence and sensitivity before his exposure, then recognizes the sophistication of his escape tactics 528 592 673.

  • Supplies a tip about a hideout to gain the military’s trust and secure an armed escort out of the mountains 673.
  • Uses Song Ning as leverage, expecting Gu Zheng to obtain the object he wants in exchange for her safety 675.
  • Shelters underground beneath a courtyard surrounded by buried explosives 676.
  • Orders Xiao Guang to clean up and destroy evidence before another move 678.

Drugs and Antidotes

Yuanhang possesses drugs that restrict Song Ning’s movement and speech. He also claims to have developed advanced drugs sold internationally 675 676 682.

  • Uses a red-marked syringe before presenting Song Ning as unable to speak 675.
  • A blue-marked injection previously eases weakness in her limbs 682.
  • In captivity, instructs the rescuers to administer two-thirds of the blue-marked medicine and one-third of the yellow-marked medicine to counteract the drugs 682.
  • Side effect: The incapacitating drug also interferes with swallowing 674.
  • Safety precaution: Gu Zheng sends the recovered medicine to Professor Ge for testing rather than immediately trusting Yuanhang’s instructions 682.

Armed Coercion and Criminal Resources

Yuanhang uses a pistol to seize control of Song Ning and prevent resistance. He claims access to substantial money, advanced weapons, and highly capable experts 672 682.

  • Holds a pistol against Song Ning’s temple and fires at He Lin before she can act 672.
  • Commands Chen Jiu and Xiao Guang during his escape 674 678.
  • Uses explosives around the hideout as a deterrent to rescue attempts 676.
