Background / History

Killua grew up in a family that operated as an assassination organization. Since childhood, he followed its arrangements and underwent daily killing training. He completed assassination jobs himself, taking pride in his discreet methods and his mother's praise of his talent. His family also owned a private airship, making air travel and aerial nightscapes familiar to him 37 40.

Eventually, Killua became tired of that life and demanded the right to decide his own future. When his mother and brother tried to prevent him from leaving, he beat them both and escaped. He then entered the Hunter Exam, telling Gon and Kaya that he intended to earn a license and arrest his family for their bounties. Although he knew how powerful his father was, that ambition motivated him to become stronger 40.

Personality

Killua initially presents himself as cool, proud, and difficult to impress. His upbringing makes him awkward about showing interest in others: he is drawn to Gon and Kaya but hesitates to approach them openly. He also judges potential companions by strength, giving Pokkle only a cold acknowledgment because he considers him inferior in talent, ability, and fighting spirit 27 28.

Beneath that reserve, Killua longs for close friendship. Gon's pinky swear earns a heartfelt smile, while the trust between Gon and Kaya leaves him quietly envious. He reveals his family's profession partly to test whether they will accept him; their lack of fear or prejudice makes him more willing to grow close to them 27 38 40.

His desire to stop living as a killer conflicts with ingrained violent impulses. Frustration against Netero brings his bloodlust close to the surface, and harassment of Kaya nearly provokes him into killing two candidates. Nevertheless, he listens to Kaya's intervention and responds warmly when Kaya reminds him that he wanted to leave killing behind 42 43.

Killua is competitive without refusing to acknowledge his friends' strengths. He admits that Kaya is better at combat tactics and praises his adaptability during their spar. Chocolate balls also reveal a more childish side: he blushes while accepting Kaya's gift and becomes visibly excited at the prospect of buying more 29 42 43.
