At a training ground littered with wooden posts cut in half, Yasuo stood before a row of eight posts and took a deep breath. He practiced the One-Sword Style, and the task Kenny had given him a year ago was to cut through all eight posts in front of him with a single stroke.
Yasuo gripped his blade with both hands and concentrated his weight on the balls of his feet. In the next instant, he slashed forward at tremendous speed, his figure blurring as he surged ahead. A crack instantly appeared in the stone beneath him.
An afterimage flashed past, and all eight posts were severed at waist height. Yasuo kept taking deep breaths, a few beads of sweat trickling down his face. Compared to before, when one stroke had left him completely spent, he had improved considerably.
Realizing he still had strength to spare, Yasuo turned around in delight to find Kenny. As soon as he turned, he saw Kenny leaning against a wall, already wearing a cowboy hat, with a cigarette seized from Marley between his lips.
"Master! I did it! I can go to the Front Lines now, right?" Yasuo said, brimming with excitement.
Kenny did not answer. Instead, he walked to the center of the training ground, pulled out four wooden posts, and planted them again in a quadrilateral formation, with five meters between each post.
Yasuo followed him and watched what he was doing, unable to make sense of it.
"Your enemies will never just stand stupidly in one direction, and you'll never have only one enemy," Kenny said slowly, skillfully blowing a smoke ring. He could not help savoring the sensation. This really was good stuff.
"What do you mean, Master?" Yasuo asked, confused.
