But Gendo Ikari had devised his own plan on top of SELLE's.
It ran directly counter to SELLE's intended goal.
Gendo Ikari's goal was to become a god and resurrect Yui Ikari.
Gendo Ikari loved Yui Ikari deeply. After she disappeared during the Unit-01 experiment, he voluntarily proposed to SEELE's Chairman Ghil that they fully implement the Human Instrumentality Project, all to achieve his own ends. His plan was to defeat every Angel, trigger Third Impact, and initiate human instrumentality. During that process, he would attempt to enter a world where only souls coexisted through a particular method and find Yui Ikari. Then he would use the Spear of Longinus and other means to "kill god," allowing himself and Yui Ikari to become gods together, fulfilling his wish to remain with her forever and perhaps even take her back to their past life.
