Within the silent Moonshadow Residence, only Xiao Yi's long, faint breaths could be heard.
Dim golden daylight spilled gently over the bed, illuminating the sleeping girl's almost translucent face.
Suddenly, Xiao Yi's body trembled ever so slightly. Then the fingers of her right hand, resting outside the brocade quilt, began to move.
Tao Ruyin, who had been keeping watch beside the bed, immediately caught that tiny change. Her eyes widened, and she held her breath.
Those slender, white-jade fingers first curled almost imperceptibly at the knuckles, as though gathering strength. Then-
"Envoy Su, look!" With irrepressible excitement and a tremor in her voice, Tao Ruyin turned almost immediately toward Su Ningxia. "Miss moved again!"
Su Ningxia rushed to the bedside in one swift stride, her blazing gaze fixed on Xiao Yi's hand.
Just then, the fingers moved clearly again: her thumb and middle finger slowly, yet unmistakably, bent inward, while the other three fingers straightened tautly-the striking Orchid Finger gesture whose meaning remained unknown!
"Orchid Finger!" Su Ningxia blurted out. "Quick! Go report to the Matriarch! I'll stay here with Miss!"
"Yes!" Tao Ruyin immediately turned, gathered her skirts, and raced out of the room as fast as she could. Her hurried footsteps receded down the deep corridor.
Su Ningxia focused all her attention once more on the hand holding the Orchid Finger gesture, not daring to let herself be distracted for even an instant.
This movement was clearly much more distinct and steadier than when she and Gao Cuilan had happened to glimpse it last time, as though conveying some silent persistence.
