"I still can't figure it out."

"Why did I get transported to an era without smartphones or computers?"

"For someone from the twenty-first century, living without a smartphone is practically a death sentence."

"But at least this world has one thing going for it."

"This is a world where devils and humans coexist. Devils appear in the human world from time to time, and there are devil hunters who fight them. As long as you're strong enough, you can fulfill any desire, whether human or devil."

At that point,

the boy lying on the wooden boards broke into a grin.

He seemed to have found a goal.

His name was Meng Fan.

He was a transmigrator who had traveled from the twenty-first century to the twentieth.

After arriving, he had signed a permanent contract with Freddy, the Dream Devil.

From then on, he had become a devil-human who could freely wield the Dream Devil's power.

Since he was new here, with no friends or relatives and no skills to fall back on,

his only option was to become a Civilian Devil Hunter.

He earned commissions by killing devils to keep his stomach full.

But he had happened to hear about a boy named Denji living nearby.

He was a devil hunter too.

So Meng Fan had come all this way to wait for Denji at his little wooden shack.

Before long, outside the shack,

a blond boy who was only sixteen yet already missing one testicle, his right eye, and a kidney came striding over.

He held a dog with a saw blade sticking out of its head in his arms.

The dog was orange.

Its body was almost oval.

Its tail was a chainsaw's starter cord.

Without its facial features and limbs, it would have looked exactly like a chibi chainsaw.

A bag of multigrain bread hung from the dog's body.

Despite its fierce appearance, its gaze was incredibly gentle as it looked at Denji.

"The money we made cutting and selling wood today will keep us in bread for a week."

"Pochita, it's all thanks to you."

"I never could've done it alone."

The two pushed open the shack's door, chatting and laughing.

But the next second, Denji's expression froze.

He stood rooted to the spot.

"You're back."

Meng Fan stretched as he greeted him.

Then he yawned.

"You..."

"Don't just stand there. Come in and sit down."

Meng Fan deliberately glanced at the sliced bread hanging from Pochita's body.

As a devil, Pochita was highly sensitive.

It immediately noticed Meng Fan's gaze.

It let out a low growl at him.

"Grrr..."

"Who are you? How'd you get in?"

"Forget that. I've been waiting for you for ages. Hurry up and sit down so we can enjoy a slice of bread together."

"Eat bread?!"

"Hey, who the hell are you? If you're Yakuza here to collect my debt, I'm already working with your boss. I'll kill devils for you to pay it off, so don't come to my house and mess with our lives."

Denji sounded irritated.

And this guy had better not even think about taking his bread.

"Don't get mad."

"I'm not Yakuza, just a Civilian Devil Hunter passing through."

Meng Fan brushed off his backside and stood up.

He walked toward Denji enthusiastically.

His smile alone was enough to make Denji lower his guard.

"You're a devil hunter too?" Denji looked him up and down.

"Too? Don't tell me you are as well?"

"That's right. We're devil hunters too."

"Then we're in the same line of work."

Meng Fan warmly patted Denji's shoulder.

One second, Meng Fan was all smiles.

The next, his expression changed abruptly.

He snatched the bread hanging from Pochita's body.

Denji and Pochita were shocked.

But before they could react, Meng Fan kicked both boy and dog out the door.

Denji was dazed when he hit the ground.

But he quickly got up and readied himself for a fight.

"Pochita," he called.

Bzzzz...

The shrill roar of a chainsaw rang out.

The chainsaw embedded in the middle of Pochita's head was spinning at full speed.

His bread had been stolen, and he had been kicked out of his own house.

Denji instantly flew into a rage.

Holding Pochita, he charged into the shack.

He was determined to fight Meng Fan to settle who was stronger-and who would live.

But the outcome was obvious.

Meng Fan easily kicked him out the door again.

"Too weak. You call yourself a devil hunter when you're this weak?"

Meng Fan took huge bites of the sliced bread.

He walked to the doorway and sneered at the furious Denji. "Whenever you find a stranger in your home, don't hesitate. There's no way he's a good person."

With that, he finished all of Denji's bread for the week.

Then he casually tossed the empty bread bag by the door.

For Denji, this was undoubtedly the worst day ever.

"You..."

"That was a week's worth of food for me and Pochita, and you ate it all!!"

Denji gripped Pochita tightly again and roared.

The chainsaw on Pochita's head spun faster too.

"A week's worth of food?"

"You mean the two of you only eat six slices of bread in a whole week?"

Meng Fan deliberately put on a look of disbelief.

"That's right!!"

"The Chainsaw Devil who once dominated Hell and devoured the Nuclear Weapons Devil and the Four Horsemen has it way too rough living with you."

"Pochita, I think you should come with me instead. I can buy you dog food."

"Shut up!"

"I can't do it now, but I'll make sure Pochita has a good life someday. As for you, piss off back where you came from."

Furious, Denji charged at him, swinging Pochita.

This time, Meng Fan didn't attack.

He stood there with his hands in his pockets, looking perfectly relaxed.

Only when Denji was almost upon him

did he turn sideways and stick out a foot.

Denji tripped and fell.

He slammed face-first into the ground.

Pochita flew out of his hands too.

"Pochita."

Even though his face hurt badly,

Denji still scrambled up and ran to Pochita's side.

At the same time, he realized how strong Meng Fan was.

The two of them weren't even on the same level.

"What the hell do you want?"

"I came here for one reason: to make you afraid of me," Meng Fan said casually.

"Afraid of you?"

Denji gritted his teeth.

But fear had already begun to take root in his heart.

He really was afraid.

Afraid that Meng Fan would take Pochita away.

Afraid that Meng Fan would keep stealing his food.

Afraid that he would destroy the ordinary life Denji had struggled so hard to maintain.

Sensing Denji's fear,

Meng Fan closed his eyes and let out a long, satisfied breath.

It was as though he had sucked something away.

When he opened his eyes again,

he narrowed them with a smile. "Denji, I was actually just joking with you."

"Joking?" Denji looked utterly bewildered.

Because Meng Fan's tone earlier hadn't sounded like a joke.

It had sounded more like he was pronouncing a death sentence.

"Don't doubt it. I was just joking. Otherwise, I'd have killed you already. I came here to help you live the life you want."

"Are you kidding me? I don't even know you."

"We'll have plenty of time to get to know each other. But before that, I'm going to turn you into a hero."

"A hero?!"

Denji laughed. He had dreamed of it, sure.

But he wasn't stupid.

There was no way he could become a hero.

"Don't laugh. If there were a chance to become a hero and solve your debt problem at the same time, would you want it?"

Denji froze, but still asked, "What chance?"

The corners of Meng Fan's mouth rose as he slowly approached.

Standing beside Denji, he said unhurriedly, "I'll help you slaughter the Yakuza."
