Background / History

Lost Past and the Accord

Melina has lost her past and does not know what duty awaits her. Her memory loss is selective: she retains knowledge about the Lands Between while lacking an understanding of her own mission and purpose 30 47.

Before introducing herself, she treated the Tarnished in the Stranded Graveyard and left him a Crystal Tear Flask. At Gatefront, she offers to fulfill a Finger Maiden’s role, converting his runes into strength in exchange for passage to the foot of the Erdtree. He accepts out of gratitude, and she gives him the Spectral Steed Whistle 17.

Learning About the Tarnished

Melina initially warns the Tarnished against pursuing dragon power too far, but subsequently explains how to perform Dragon Communion. His ability to cast draconic incantations without a catalyst prompts her to ask about his past. She learns of his battle with two Ancient Dragons and his later service under Godfrey 18 19.

After his return from the underground tomb, the Tarnished encourages her to see her uncertainty as something that can change rather than define her. Their conversation turns toward the meaning of her existence, and she learns that he is sworn kin to Godfrey and Marika 22.

Renewing Their Agreement

Before their first visit to Roundtable Hold, the Tarnished tells Melina that he intends to overthrow the age rather than become a lord like Godfrey. She agrees to continue traveling with him because he still intends to reach the Erdtree. Her conditions are that he must not extinguish all life or slaughter innocents 30.

Melina expresses hope that he will save the broken world and that she will find a new duty of her own. She then explains Roundtable Hold’s rules and takes his hand to bring him there 30.

Stormveil and the Divine Tower

During the journey through Stormveil, Melina cares for Kukla and discovers that the Spirit Jellyfish longs for her family. While integrating the Tarnished’s runes, she also identifies a mysterious internal vortex whose pull draws the runes together; neither understands its origin 34 36.

At Godrick’s Divine Tower, the Tarnished’s declaration against the Greater Will leads Melina to question whether she shares his dissatisfaction. She subsequently helps him integrate Godrick’s Great Rune and explains that an Arc is needed to awaken its dormant power 39 40.

Journey into Liurnia

At the Church of Elleh, Melina becomes wary of Kale’s altered presence. After leaving, she identifies the danger as frenzied flame and urges the Tarnished not to touch it 45.

In Liurnia, she identifies Albinaurics, warns about their blood’s ability to suppress Crystal Tears of Golden Grace, and helps the Tarnished select tears for his Flask of Wondrous Physick. By this point, she notices that talking with him has become natural enough that remaining silent feels wrong 47 48.

Appearance

Melina manifests as a young woman, her spectral form solidifying until she looks almost alive. She has a delicate, fair face and usually wears a roomy hood that conceals much of it 17 36.

• Hair: Shoulder-length rose-gold hair, gently curled at the ends 17.
• Right eye: Shimmers with gold 17.
• Left eye: Appears sealed shut beneath a black, claw-like marking extending from the upper eyelid toward the eye’s corner 17.
• Expressions: Usually subdued; changes are often visible only through slight movements of her brows or eyes 19 22 39.
• Physical presence: Despite being a spirit, she feels solid when the Tarnished touches her head 47.

Personality

Melina speaks slowly and calmly, admitting that she is not good at expressing herself. Her limited experience with others makes ordinary interactions awkward: she needs prompting to greet Kukla and initially does not understand that Tarnished need sleep 18 22 28.

Her reserve does not indicate indifference. She offers to heal the wounded Tarnished, feels sympathy for children who have become Spirit Jellyfish, and gently comforts Kukla over her forgotten family 22 28 34. She also takes quiet pleasure in the scenery from Godrick’s Divine Tower 39.

Melina prioritizes reaching the Erdtree over requiring the Tarnished to follow the established order, but draws a firm line against indiscriminate destruction. Their conversations gradually draw out her curiosity, personal wishes, and doubts about the Greater Will 19 30 39 48.

Rune Integration

Melina uses an incantation and physical contact to merge collected runes into the Tarnished’s body 17.

• Offers healing after his battle in the tomb; he declines because her Crystal Tear Flask is sufficient 22.
• As a spirit, she does not require rest and has no concern for herself when faced with the catacombs’ poison pool 20 22.

Melina can detect subtle changes in magical energy and perceive a spirit’s unresolved wishes 19 34.

• Identifies prior use of a Stonesword Key from its internal energy rather than its appearance 19.
• Senses the Tarnished’s growing power and the vortex within him, which feels warm and nostalgic rather than dangerous 28 36.
• Perceives Kukla’s longing for family, though she cannot recover whom the child seeks or where they are 34.

Melina retains practical knowledge despite losing her personal memories 47.
