Ch. 223The Ninth Life: A Stone Blooms

Guizhong vented her hurt over Morax calling her stupid while Cloud Retainer comforted her. Morax came to apologize, and Guizhong forgave him, leaving them on warmer terms.

  • Guizhong threw stones into the river and told Cloud Retainer she was done trying to make Morax happy.
  • Cloud Retainer comforted Guizhong and left the two of them alone when Morax arrived.
  • Morax apologized for calling Guizhong stupid and for any other hurtful things he had said.
  • Guizhong cried, accepted Morax's apology, and reassured him that she forgave him.
  • Morax smiled with relief, and Guizhong froze at seeing him smile for the first time.

Ch. 224The ninth life: Your heart will tell you the answer

Morax asked Xiu Yuan for advice after Guizhong fled in embarrassment, but admitted he did not know whether he liked her. Xiu Yuan told him to give his heart time and observe people in love, leaving Morax to find his own answer.

  • Guizhong blushed and hurried away, and Morax left after she was gone.
  • Morax explained the encounter to Xiu Yuan and said he had always thought of Guizhong as an ally and friend.
  • Xiu Yuan explained how Guizhong had grown fond of Morax by observing his strength, gentleness, and care for Liyue.
  • Xiu Yuan told Morax that only his own heart could decide whether he liked Guizhong.
  • Morax agreed to observe loving couples in Liyue to better understand his feelings.

Ch. 225The Ninth Life: Utterly Revolting Sea Monsters

Xiu Yuan responded to Liyue’s plea for help when hordes of tiny, slippery monsters invaded the city. He used electricity to flush them from their hiding places, then told the evacuated people they could return home.

  • Morax observed Guizhong’s different sides and concluded that she was a strange person while he and the Adepti expanded their territory.
  • When monsters invaded Liyue, Xiu Yuan heard the people’s cries for help and sent the Long Spear with instructions for them to evacuate to the southeastern beach.
  • Xiu Yuan discovered that the monsters were weak, dark-blue creatures whose slime conducted electricity, and used shocks to kill them and expose those hiding in corners.
  • After four hours, Xiu Yuan cleared the city and told the people on the beach they could return home.

Ch. 226The Ninth Life, an Uncanny Place

While searching for Havria, Xiu Yuan found a ruined village near Stone Gate and felt its eerie presence drawing him in. He escaped before the presence and his karmic debt could assimilate him, leaving the source of the village’s ominous influence unknown.

  • Xiu Yuan wandered north of the Guili Plains, reflecting on the flood he believed Chi had caused and the danger of confronting it.
  • Xiu Yuan reached what he thought was Stone Gate and discovered a village filled with skeletons and rotting, mold-covered houses.
  • Xiu Yuan heard the voices of his karmic debt despite wearing his mask and felt a strange desire to remain in the village.
  • Xiu Yuan sensed a presence of ill omen, death, slaughter, and pestilence, then hurried away as the voices and sensations faded.

Ch. 227The Ninth Life: A Gathering Surge

After six months of strange peace, Xiu Yuan and Liyue’s leaders sensed a vast alliance of Demon Gods and Demon God Retainers converging on Liyue. The chapter ended as the overwhelming force charged toward the city.

  • Xiu Yuan fled the place whose powerful pull had nearly overcome him and returned empty-handed.
  • Morax mastered Planet Befall and became strong enough to fight Azhdaha evenly.
  • Guizhong invented the Guizhong Ballista, a weapon capable of killing ordinary Demon Gods, though it could not be mass-produced.
  • Morax grew closer to Guizhong while Liyue and the Guili Plains enjoyed six months without Demon God attacks.
  • Zhongli told Xiu Yuan that the absence of attacks was unnatural, and Xiu Yuan suspected their enemies were uniting against Liyue.
  • Morax, the Adepti, Azhdaha, and the others sensed countless Demon Gods and tens of thousands of Demon God Retainers approaching Liyue.

Ch. 228The Ninth Life, the Demon God of Strength, Eligor

Liyue braced for an approaching horde of Demon Gods as Morax organized the defense at Mt. Tianheng. Morax confronted the Demon God of Strength, Eligor, who mocked him for facing the battle without his allies.

  • The people of Liyue heard the monsters approaching, and a frightened man’s warnings were dismissed as others put their faith in Rex Lapis.
  • Morax ordered the Adepti to hold Mt. Tianheng, then split off with Azhdaha to meet the approaching enemy while the Adepti set up mechanisms.
  • Xiu Yuan felt satisfied that Morax had calmly organized the defense without asking him what to do.
  • Morax encountered Eligor, an old sparring partner, alongside two other Demon Gods and a crowd of Demon God Retainers.
  • Eligor taunted Morax for not bringing the Dust Demon God, the God of the Stove, or the dragon king, while a female Demon God urged him to kill Morax.

Ch. 229The ninth life, one against a thousand

Morax attacked Eligor and his allies, using spear and bow techniques to kill their retainers before the battle escalated into a clash of summoned rock creatures. Surrounded by Eligor, two Demon Gods, and a massive host, Morax began to struggle as his protective shield cracked.

  • Morax hurled an explosive spear at Eligor, then controlled its fragments to wound the other Demon Gods and pierce their retainers.
  • Morax fired a splitting arrow followed by a faster, lethal arrow that grazed Eligor and killed several retainers.
  • Eligor summoned a Giant Rock Hand and ordered the two Demon Gods and their forces to attack Morax.
  • Morax summoned three Rock Whales, while Eligor called forth a towering Giant Rock Heavenly Beast that crushed one of them.
  • Morax turned a rock Kite Bird into a spear and split the Giant Rock Heavenly Beast, but his shield cracked under the enemies' combined assault.

Ch. 230The Ninth Life, the Despair Shield

Azhdaha fought four Demon Gods and thousands of Demon God Retainers, using successive shields to withstand their attacks. When one Demon God bypassed him and charged toward Liyue, Azhdaha tried to hold off the others while the Adepti prepared to defend the city.

  • Azhdaha used elemental attacks and his Geo shield to battle four Demon Gods and their retainers.
  • The four Demon Gods broke Azhdaha’s Geo shield, but he raised a blue shield in its place.
  • After five hours, the attackers broke the blue shield, only for Azhdaha to raise his Despair shield and mock them.
  • One Demon God led over a hundred retainers around Azhdaha and charged toward Liyue while the other three held Azhdaha back.
  • Azhdaha unleashed his power to stop the remaining attackers, and the Adepti aimed their mechanisms at the approaching Demon God and his host.

Ch. 231The ninth life: launching an all-out assault on Liyue

The Demon God Retainers overwhelmed the exhausted Adepti and began an all-out assault on Liyue. Xiu Yuan restored the Adepti, and they began evacuating the people toward the Guili Plains as the attackers closed in.

  • The Adepti and Ganyu fought the Demon God Retainers for seven days while the people of Liyue watched anxiously.
  • A one-eyed troll struck Skybracer into Mt. Tianheng, and the Retainers knocked the other Adepti out of the sky before charging into Liyue.
  • A masked man appeared with the injured Skybracer and Cloud Retainer and unconscious Ganyu, gave them divine power, and vanished; the Adepti recognized him as Xiu Yuan.
  • Cloud Retainer ordered Ganyu to evacuate everyone toward the Guili Plains, and Ganyu transformed into a giant Qilin as the Adepti warned Liyue’s people to flee.

Ch. 232The Ninth Life: With Our King Here, We Won't Lose

Ganyu began evacuating Liyue’s children as Demon God Retainers tried to collapse Mt. Tianheng and stop the escape. Xiu Yuan secretly reinforced the mountain, drawing the attackers’ fire and giving the Adepti confidence to fight back.

  • Ganyu loaded Liyue’s children onto her back and prepared to carry them to safety while their parents stayed behind.
  • The Demon God ordered the attackers to stop Ganyu, and the Cyclops Troll struck Mt. Tianheng until the mountain began to collapse.
  • Skybracer offered his antlers to brace Mt. Tianheng, but Moon Carver noticed the mountain had stopped falling.
  • The Demon God Retainers found they could no longer damage Mt. Tianheng and poured their attacks into it.
  • Xiu Yuan revealed that he had reinforced Mt. Tianheng to draw the attackers away from Liyue and wear them down.
  • The Adepti recognized Xiu Yuan’s help and charged the Demon God Retainers, declaring that they would win with their King there.

Ch. 233The Ninth Life, the Signal

Ganyu evacuated Liyue's people to the Guili Plains while the Adepti fought the Demon God Retainers. A Demon God's signal convinced the other enemies that Liyue had fallen, leaving Morax to face Eligor's taunts as the battle continued.

  • The Adepti renewed their attack on the exhausted Demon God Retainers after Xiu Yuan restored their strength, while a barrier kept them from bringing down Mt. Tianheng.
  • Ganyu made three trips to the Guili Plains and evacuated most of Liyue's people, as Guizhong and Marchosius settled the refugees.
  • The Demon God in Liyue unleashed a burst of purple lightning that scattered the clouds as a signal.
  • The three Demon Gods fighting Azhdaha assumed Liyue had fallen and discussed using the Chi to overrun the Grassland.
  • Eligor saw the signal and told Morax that Liyue had fallen and his allies would suffer because of him.

Ch. 234The ninth life, mountains rise

While Morax fought Eligor, the Chi unleashed a catastrophic flood toward the Guili Plains. A masked man raised six enormous mountains to stop it, and the survivors believed Rex Lapis had saved them.

  • Morax charged Eligor again, determined to focus on the fight despite Eligor's taunts.
  • The Chi unleashed a flood powerful enough to threaten half of Liyue, sending it through Dihua Marsh toward the Guili Plains.
  • Farmers and villagers panicked as the flood approached, while Guizhong and Marchosius realized their mechanisms could not stop it.
  • A masked man in a black coat raised his hand and caused the ground to shake, sending enormous rocks rising across the plain.
  • Six colossal mountains rose north of the Guili Plains and blocked the flood, leaving only a small amount of water to splash over.
  • The survivors praised Rex Lapis, believing he had created the mountains and saved them.

Ch. 235The Ninth Life: No More Running

Xiu Yuan nearly succumbed to karmic debt and the Abyss, then realized he could not keep relying on luck to survive. When he returned to Liyue, the allied Demon Gods had withdrawn, and Morax learned how the Guili Plains had been saved.

  • Xiu Yuan resisted the voices tempting him to join them, but the corruption caused unbearable pain and drove him to nearly stab himself in the head.
  • Xiu Yuan recovered his mental strength with the Tranquility Mantra and decided he could not keep running or rely on luck to withstand the karmic debt.
  • A Demon God discovered that six enormous mountains had blocked the flood and that no one in Liyue or the Guili Plains had died, so the seven allied Demon Gods withdrew.
  • Liyue residents began returning from the Guili Plains, praising Rex Lapis with joyful excitement.
  • Morax learned from the Adepti and Azhdaha what had happened on the battlefields and why Mt. Tianheng stood in its precarious form.

Ch. 236The ninth life: Am I really that useless?

After seeing the six mountains Xiu Yuan raised to stop the flood, Morax admitted to Guizhong that he had saved the Guili Plains. Guizhong broke down over her inability to protect her people and asked Morax whether a weak Demon God like her deserved to live.

  • Morax and the Adepti went to the Guili Plains and saw six enormous mountains blocking the floodwater.
  • Morax left without claiming credit, then returned alone in human form to speak with Guizhong and Marchosius.
  • Morax told Guizhong that Xiu Yuan had created the mountains and promised to pass along her wish to thank him.
  • Guizhong confessed that she felt useless for being unable to fight or save her people, then asked Morax if she deserved to live.

Ch. 237The ninth life: I wanted to protect the Guili Plains for once, too

Guizhong devoted seven days and nights to building the Guizhong Ballista so she could help protect the Guili Plains. After testing its power, she collapsed from exhaustion, and Morax caught her.

  • Guizhong refused Morax's help and worked day and night on the Guizhong Ballista, while Morax stayed beside her.
  • After seven days and nights, Guizhong finished the weapon and asked Morax to test it.
  • Guizhong fired repeated blasts at Morax's shield, which cracked only slightly after dozens of shots.
  • Guizhong explained that the ballista could let even those with little divine power fire many powerful projectiles, then fainted from exhaustion.
  • Morax caught Guizhong and recognized how determined she was to protect the Guili Plains.

Ch. 238The Ninth Life: Slay Evil Spirits, Protect Liyue

After comforting Guizhong as she resolved to build more Guizhong Ballistas, Morax slew and sealed the Chi beneath Qingce Village. Back in Liyue, he faced a crowd of armed residents who wanted to fight alongside him, and tested their resolve with his killing intent.

  • Morax comforted Guizhong, who decided to build Guizhong Ballistas to help protect Liyue and the Guili Plains.
  • Morax followed the flood to Qingce Village, killed the weakened Chi, and sealed it beneath the village.
  • Morax returned to Mt. Tianheng and found Liyue residents gathered to demand the chance to fight evil spirits.
  • Morax asked whether the volunteers feared death, and they insisted they were prepared to fight and die for Liyue.
  • Morax released his immense killing intent over the crowd, and they endured its pressure with solemn determination.

Ch. 239The ninth life: a thousand rocks stand firm, the mountain ramparts never yield

Morax equipped and trained the Thousand Rock Corps while the Adepti searched for the seven Demon Gods who had attacked Liyue. Three years later, Skybracer found the enemies near Dragonspine, and Xiu Yuan returned to offer to guard Liyue while Morax and Azhdaha went after them.

  • Morax approved the Thousand Rock Corps’ name, gave its members armor and Rock Spears, and personally taught them spearmanship.
  • Guizhong continued building her Guizhong Ballistas as the Adepti searched beyond Liyue for the seven Demon Gods.
  • Morax searched for Xiu Yuan but could not find him, and sometimes tried to brew tea in his absence.
  • Three years later, Skybracer reported that the seven Demon Gods were near Dragonspine and had grown stronger by defeating other Demon Gods.
  • Xiu Yuan appeared on a rooftop at Mt. Tianheng and offered to defend Liyue while Morax and Azhdaha went to fight the seven.

Ch. 240The Ninth Life: Marching to War

Xiu Yuan stayed behind to guard Liyue while Morax led the Millelith and their allies toward Dragonspine to fight the seven Demon Gods. Five days later, a Demon God and its followers entered Liyue.

  • Xiu Yuan returned and assured Morax that he could protect Liyue while Morax led the campaign.
  • Morax rallied the Millelith and led them, the adepti, and Azhdaha toward Dragonspine to avenge the attacks from three years earlier.
  • Xiu Yuan watched the army depart and recalled that he had spent three years in Qingce Village studying how it affected his karmic debt.
  • On the fifth day after Morax set out, a Demon God entered Liyue with a host of followers.

Ch. 241The Ninth Life, the Dream Demon God

The Dream Demon God invaded Liyue while Morax and its fighting forces were away, planning to destroy the nation and provoke Morax into a war with the other Demon Gods. Xiu Yuan stopped his retainers and confronted him, leaving the Dream Demon God with a spear pointed at his forehead.

  • The Dream Demon God learned that Morax had marched out with Liyue's forces and set out to destroy Liyue and the Guili Plains.
  • The Dream Demon God ordered Golden Roc to attack Xiu Yuan, who blocked Golden Roc's spear.
  • Bosacius and Indarias joined Golden Roc, but the three retainers could not hurt Xiu Yuan.
  • The Dream Demon God sent five more retainers against Xiu Yuan, but Xiu Yuan evaded all eight of their attacks.
  • The Dream Demon God realized Xiu Yuan was far more powerful than a retainer and tried to run, but Xiu Yuan pressed a spear to his forehead.

Ch. 242The ninth life: We want to serve under you

Xiu Yuan drove off the Dream Demon God and freed his eight retainers. Five of them chose to follow Xiu Yuan and offered to serve him.

  • Xiu Yuan spared the Dream Demon God, who fled after begging for his life.
  • Xiu Yuan told the eight retainers to find somewhere safe and avoid being captured again.
  • Three retainers left, while Bosacius, Bonanus, Menogias, Indarias, and Golden Roc decided to follow Xiu Yuan.
  • The five caught up with Xiu Yuan, knelt before him, and said they wanted to serve under him.
