Danjin carried Ling An all the way out of the city.
She looked just like an innocent little girl who knew nothing and had come out for a spring outing.
Yet Tacet Discords roamed outside Jinzhou City, and bandits ran rampant. It really was no place for a spring outing.
She was short and looked utterly innocent, glancing left and right as she went.
Anyone who saw her would have thought she was some little girl who had sneaked out of her house, curious about every new thing she saw.
Ling An wanted to warn her, but right now, he was nothing more than a harmless little kitten.
Forget it. If we really run into danger, I can step in then.
Danjin skipped merrily through the wilderness, chatting away to Ling An as she enjoyed her spring outing.
"Kitty, kitty, why haven't we seen the person I'm looking for yet?"
Ling An said, "Meow."
Who was Danjin looking for?
Aside from caravans and the occasional patrol, there were probably only bandits out here.
They made their way to the Norfall Barrens, where they encountered a man in filthy clothes.
The man looked vicious, with a knife scar across his dark face. One glance was enough to tell he was trouble.
When he saw Danjin, he gave her a quick once-over, and the piece of uncut jade at her chest immediately caught his attention.
He hurried over. "Little girl, why are you wandering around out here alone? It's very dangerous out here, you know."
Ling An screamed inwardly, Don't answer him, don't answer him! One look should tell you this guy is bad news!
Danjin tilted her head up slightly, resting a finger against her chin in thought, and said innocently, "Sir, I'm looking for someone."
"Oh? Who are you looking for?" The man smiled, but it did nothing to hide the viciousness on his face.
"My little sister got lost out here a few days ago. Hmph, I'm going to find her myself!" Danjin clenched her fists, full of determination.
"Well, what a coincidence! I saw a little girl just a few days ago. Maybe she's your sister!"
"Really?" Danjin's eyes immediately lit up.
"Of course. How could I lie to such a sweet, innocent little girl?" The man patted his chest in assurance.
"Okay, sir, hurry and take me there!" Danjin's face brimmed with eagerness.
After witnessing that exchange, Ling An couldn't even muster a sarcastic comment.
Even a three-year-old could have seen that this man was a bandit with ill intentions.
She was far too naive.
Forget it. At least I'm here.
If there really is danger, I'll just step in.
Danjin obediently followed the man north, heading farther and farther into remote territory.
At last, a camp appeared before them.
The man walked up to the door and knocked, saying quietly, "Got some business."
Then he pushed the door open and turned back with a vicious grin. "Come on, little girl. See if the person you're looking for is in here."
Danjin craned her head curiously. Inside the dim room, men and women, young and old, sat bound.
A young man leaned helplessly against the wall. At the sight of Danjin's sweet, innocent face, he couldn't help lamenting:
"The bandit chief is back. Another poor soul has fallen into their hands."
Several bandits rose with wicked grins, grabbing their weapons.
In the blink of an eye, the two of them were completely surrounded.
Ling An's heart tightened. They had walked straight into a bandit den!
He couldn't help sighing. Fine. I was an upstanding young man who helped old ladies cross the street in my past life. I'll chalk this up as another good deed.
Ling An braced himself, ready to act.
But the next moment, he heard Danjin's excited, exhilarated voice. "That's right, sir! I've found who I was looking for!"
She gently set Ling An on the ground, her smile warm and sweet, and wagged a finger. "What comes next isn't for little kitties to watch."
She turned her back to him.
In an instant, the Crimson Blade left its sheath.
By the time Ling An came to his senses, the bandit chief's head, still wearing its wicked grin, had moved from his neck to Danjin's hand.
She held the head aloft, all trace of her innocent demeanor gone.
Her murderous aura rose steadily.
The smell of blood flooded everyone's nostrils.
The bandits panicked. A man who appeared to be their second-in-command raised his weapon and shouted, "She's trouble! Kill her!"
But the bandits merely exchanged glances. Not one dared step forward.
The blue in Danjin's eyes was gone, replaced by crimson.
She raised a slender, pale finger and gently wiped a spot of blood from her cheek. "A freshly repaired weapon really does work well."
Under Ling An's astonished gaze, Danjin darted through the bandits with the Crimson Blade in hand.
Necks, joints, waists, bellies-crimson light flashed everywhere.
A rain of blood swept through the bandit camp.
In just a few minutes, more than a dozen bandits lay in pools of blood.
Danjin advanced step by step through their blood.
Even after every bandit was dead, she did not stop, working her way back through the corpses.
She delivered finishing blows, one after another.
Until there was nothing left to kill, until they could not possibly be any deader.
Ling An watched, utterly numb.
He had seen people kill humans and Tacet Discords.
But this was his first time seeing someone go around delivering finishing blows after everyone was already dead.
Several times, he nearly spoke up to remind her that some of the bandits' heads were already separated from their necks. Did they really need another finishing blow?
But Danjin simply continued in silence, not missing a single one.
What was this?
This Danjin was overpowered but overly cautious?
Ling An watched quietly. Danjin's slaughter did not frighten him. Instead, he saw immense hatred in her crimson eyes.
That hatred was a mountain, and when it collapsed, it became crimson bloodlust.
Hidden beneath that hatred and bloodlust was a lingering sorrow that would not fade.
She had a story.
Ling An couldn't help being curious.
What could make this innocent girl turn, in an instant, into a machine that slaughtered bandits without blinking?
Judging by her practiced movements alone, she had probably killed well over a hundred bandits.
She must have been through something.
After giving every corpse a finishing blow, Danjin picked up Ling An, untied the unfortunate captives in the camp, and pointed them toward Jinzhou.
Having witnessed Danjin's slaughter firsthand, they thanked her over and over, yet fled faster than anyone.
Not one dared look back, as though Danjin were even more frightening than the bandits.
Danjin seemed long accustomed to that reaction.
Watching the rescued captives flee into the distance, she said loudly, "Looks like we're done. Let's go too, kitty!"
Then she carried Ling An away.
Just as Ling An thought the matter was finally settled.
She turned around and ducked into a nearby patch of bushes.
Her crimson eyes stayed fixed on the camp.
She murmured softly, "Be good, kitty. Don't make a sound."
Ling An froze. There was more?
Time ticked by, and before he knew it, they had waited nearly ten minutes.
Just as Ling An once again thought it was over.
A surviving bandit slowly poked his head through the doorway, cringing with fear as he cautiously scanned his surroundings.
Ling An was speechless. There really was another one!
"I knew I'd catch something!"
Danjin exclaimed softly, and the Crimson Blade shot out.
Before the surviving bandit could even react, it pierced his neck and pinned him firmly to the door.
Danjin deftly pulled out the Crimson Blade and said to herself, "I hid better than you back then."
She wiped away the blood and left again with Ling An in her arms.
Ling An relaxed, thinking it was finally over this time.
But the very next moment, shock froze on his face and refused to fade.
Danjin turned around and hid in the bushes once more.
Her gaze remained fixed on the camp, never straying in the slightest.
Ling An felt as though he had seen this scene somewhere before.
Just a moment ago, wasn't it?
Could there possibly be-
Another one?!
