Tris confirmed a theory he had held for some time.
Although Dementors looked large, their unusual nature meant they weighed very little and had very little physical strength.
The spell he was using to pin the Dementor in place was the Shadow-Binding Spell, a branch of Shadow Magic.
As its name suggested, the spell restrained an opponent's shadow with another shadow, thereby controlling the opponent. The larger, heavier, and stronger the target, the more magic it took to control them.
Tris had practiced his meditation method for almost a year and had taken Magic Spirit Potion at irregular intervals for two months over the holidays. His magical power had grown far beyond that of his peers.
Even the average sixth- or seventh-year student could no longer match his magical power.
It was not just him. Even Harry and Ron, whom he occasionally gave doses to, had shown noticeably excessive magical power during the first two weeks of term.

The pair were delighted, thinking their natural talent had suddenly blossomed. In reality, their magical power had developed ahead of schedule. With stronger magic, they did not need such precise control and could produce magical effects more easily.
Yet even though Tris's magical power now exceeded that of an average sixth- or seventh-year student, he still had little advantage over an adult wizard.
By rights, using the Shadow-Binding Spell on a magical dark creature as large as a Dementor should have been somewhat difficult.
In reality, Tris felt no difficulty at all. It was as though his Shadow-Binding Spell had caught nothing more than a sparrow or a mouse.
Dementors had no physical bodies. They existed much like spirits. They looked large,
