Voldemort took a step back. It was only a small step, but he had retreated all the same.

He lowered his head and looked down at his feet, seemingly unable-or unwilling-to believe that he had lost ground in a head-on clash of magical power with Dumbledore.

Tris noticed it too, but it did little to ease his mind.

Although Voldemort had come off worse in his clash with Dumbledore, Tris knew that Dumbledore was holding... holding... Wait, Dumbledore, where's your Elder Wand?

To his astonishment, Tris discovered that Dumbledore was using a wand he had never seen before.

Tris was certain that when Dumbledore had appeared to save the day while they were protecting the Philosopher's Stone in their first year, he had been holding the Elder Wand. Now, however, he had switched to an ordinary-looking wand-extremely ordinary, at least compared with the Elder Wand.

That changed how Tris felt entirely.

If Dumbledore had held the Elder Wand and gained a slight edge over Voldemort in their sparking clash of beams, that would have meant he needed the Elder Wand's support to barely overpower Voldemort.

Whether that had always been the case or was the result of age and declining strength, his own magical power would probably have fallen short of Voldemort's.

But now, Dumbledore was using an unfamiliar wand rather than the oddly shaped Elder Wand and still managing to keep Voldemort at a disadvantage. That meant Dumbledore's own magical power surpassed Voldemort's, and the implications were vastly different.

Voldemort had not thought that far. At this point, he had yet to set his sights on the Elder Wand. Utterly confident in himself and his wand, he had lost the clash of beams, and his mood turned exceedingly foul.

"Dumbledore, it seems you're not too old to move yet."
