Tris was not the only one studying the opposing side. All the other wizards stared in uncertainty and alarm at the large crowd of Dark Wizards in assorted clothing beside Voldemort.
The British wizards in particular recognized quite a few familiar faces among them-former Death Eaters who should have been locked up in Azkaban.
What puzzled them, however, was that these bastards had spent at least ten years in a shithole like Azkaban. By all rights, they should have been worn down to shadows of themselves long ago.
Yet although they looked gaunt, every one of them seemed full of vitality.
There was also the matter of their numbers: there were rather too many of them.
Voldemort had commanded numerous followers back in the day, but Harold Minchum, the Minister for Magic at the time, had responded forcefully to the Death Eaters' unrestrained use of dark magic by allowing Aurors to fight back with Combat Magic.
His successor, Millicent Bagnold, had gone even further, approving a proposal from Crouch, who was also known for his hard-line stance at the time, to allow Aurors to use the Unforgivable Curses against Dark Wizards when necessary.
Thus, although Britain's Ministry of Magic and the Order of the Phoenix had suffered devastating losses in the previous wizarding war, the Death Eaters had hardly fared any better.
With more than a decade having passed since then, there were actually very few Death Eaters still able to take the field. And of the hundred-odd people standing behind Voldemort now, most were not Death Eaters they recognized, but... abominations!
Several Auror commanders were present, and they could clearly see that many of those behind Voldemort had eyes glowing green or red. Others emanated an aura of death utterly unlike that of a living person.
