Well, Hagrid had chained them up and put socks over their claws, which made the Hippogriffs extremely uncomfortable. They tried hard to get the furry bundles off their claws, because having one of their greatest weapons covered up really left them feeling unsafe.
Even though Hagrid repeatedly stressed that there was no danger, the young wizards were still too intimidated by the Hippogriffs' enormous bodies and threatening expressions to approach.
Only after Su Er successfully mounted Sanbick's back using the proper method, circled through the air, and landed safely did the students dare climb into the enclosure and try interacting with this kind of fantastic beast they had never encountered before.
