Through Barbara's efforts, every Chitauri in the area had been wiped out, creating a pocket of safety.
Holding Peter's arm for support, she jumped down from the car roof.
Barbara's chest rose and fell. Her nonstop performance had left her forehead beaded with sweat, and a young woman nearby pulled out a packet of tissues and offered it to her.
"Thank you." Barbara quickly wiped her face, then turned her gaze to the soldiers and police officers who had held out until the end.

The soldiers and police officers thanked the girl in turn, then quickly organized an orderly evacuation of the civilians around them.
Their safety was only temporary. Getting the civilians out promptly was the sensible thing to do.
Once the ordinary people were out of danger, the battlefield would be clear for those with special abilities to cut loose.
