Though the maesters of the Citadel had fairly ordinary accommodations and meals, its central grounds were vast. Seneschal Waghram and the assembled archmaesters spent more than an hour showing Danyla around before they had covered most of the Conclave.
"Maester Tigris told us that Your Highness has loved learning since childhood. Now you have read widely and devised many novel inventions in White Sheep Town. Might you follow Queen Alyssa's example and give a lecture at the Citadel?"
After accompanying Princess Danyla throughout the tour, Seneschal Waghram found her fairly easy to get along with and made the suggestion.
Danyla answered with a smile,
"Of course, that would be no trouble. But those aren't really my inventions. At most, they were sudden inspirations built on the wisdom of my predecessors!"
"Besides, they're only little tricks of mine. They might seem marvelous while you don't understand how they work, but once the secret is explained, there's nothing much to them."
"The more I read, the more clearly I understand one thing. Knowledge is the chief force that drives and sustains the continued advancement of a kingdom or a people."
"Throughout the history of the Seven Kingdoms, the Citadel has borne the great responsibility of passing down knowledge. So if we want the Seven Kingdoms to become better, the Citadel's development is absolutely crucial!"
As the head of the Citadel, Wagham naturally recognized the deeper meaning in Danyla's words and immediately looked at Earl Hightower in puzzlement.
Earl Hightower, who had already made a binding pledge to Danyla, certainly would not let this opportunity slip away.
"Your Highness is absolutely right. Everyone knows the role the Citadel plays in the Seven Kingdoms. If we could truly help it flourish further, that would certainly be a wonderful thing!"
Hearing Earl Hightower
