Two towers stood at the entrance to the Almshouse. One was called the Dragon God's Cradle, and the other the Dragon God's Gift.

At Danyla's request, a rotating, dragon-shaped box had been installed beneath the first tower when the Almshouse was built. People could place an abandoned baby inside and rotate the box to carry the child into the Almshouse. Then they could ring the bell beside it to let those inside know that another baby had been left there.

Its main purpose was to give mothers who had suffered shame and hardship, or people who could not afford to raise children, a discreet and safe way to give up their children.

The other tower allowed the Almshouse's children to write down their wishes, place them in its box, and turn it outward, giving kindhearted people who wanted to help the Almshouse a way to grant those wishes.

After the Almshouse was completed, Danyla had someone collect these notes every day and helped fulfill the children's wishes. Later, when she went to Dragonstone, she left someone specifically in charge of the task.

The children's wishes were actually very simple. They mostly wanted practical things such as tasty food, clothing, or school supplies.

After all, any child capable of writing a wish without help must already have received the Almshouse's structured instruction.

The Almshouse mainly taught the children reading and arithmetic, while fostering gratitude and loyalty toward House Targaryen.

Like the Red Keep, the Almshouse's buildings were filled with Great Dragon motifs. Children raised in such surroundings would naturally develop an unconscious fondness for Great Dragons.

Of course, the Almshouse also taught the older children practical skills for earning a living.

For this purpose, Danyla had specifically asked King Jaehaerys for a hundred-mu Manor on the banks of the Blackwater Rush.
