Ch. 141Splitting Open the Stone Bodhisattva

Sha Wujing learned that the Stone Bodhisattva wished to meet and thank Manjushri, so Xuanzang argued that Manjushri still owed the stone a karmic debt. The Heavenly Dao bestowed a Wisdom Sword Buddha Wheel on Xuanzang, who gave its sword to Sha Wujing and ordered him to split open the Stone Bodhisattva.

  • Sha Wujing asked the Stone Bodhisattva what it wished for, and it said it wanted to meet and thank the monk who had recited sutras beside it.
  • Sha Wujing told Xuanzang and Manjushri that the stone wanted to cultivate as Manjushri's disciple, but Manjushri resisted taking it in.
  • Xuanzang reminded Manjushri that the stone had gained sentience through his sutra recitation and that their karma was not settled.
  • Manjushri said the stone could not leave because its primordial essence was exhausted and local vow power kept it alive, then challenged Xuanzang to find a way to take it away.
  • The Heavenly Dao bestowed the Wisdom Sword Buddha Wheel on Xuanzang, who formed it into a sword and handed it to Sha Wujing.
  • Xuanzang told Sha Wujing to use the sword to split open the Stone Bodhisattva.

Ch. 142The Stubborn Stone Became a Spirit Pearl

Sha Wujing cleaved open the Stone Bodhisattva, and Xuanzang’s Wish-Granting Stone transformed the stubborn stone inside into a Spirit Pearl. Manjushri took the pearl as his disciple and warned Xuanzang that his wish might one day become an ordeal.

  • Sha Wujing spoke to the stone inside the Stone Bodhisattva, and it agreed to be freed because it trusted him.
  • Sha Wujing used Manjushri’s Wisdom Sword to split the statue open and reveal a faint gray light within.
  • Xuanzang wished for the stubborn stone to become a Spirit Pearl, and the Wish-Granting Stone crumbled into powder that transformed the light into a golden pearl.
  • Manjushri took the Spirit Pearl, praised its memory and spirit, and thanked Xuanzang for granting it a new form.
  • Manjushri warned Xuanzang that his wish might bring another ordeal, encouraged Sha Wujing to protect the scriptures, and departed.

Ch. 143Water in the Yangtze, the Moon in the Sky

After the Wuji Kingdom Ruler returned to his family and resumed governing, Xuanzang secured Yongde’s release from office and urged him to return to sincere Buddhist practice. Yongde was moved by Xuanzang’s counsel and left the conversation in tears, offering him a respectful Buddhist salute.

  • The Wuji Kingdom Ruler offered Xuanzang a banquet, but Xuanzang, Wukong, and Bajie chose to stay at Baolin Temple while the ruler returned to the palace.
  • Xuanzang asked the ruler to remove Yongde from his official post rather than punish him, and the ruler agreed to bar cultivators from holding office.
  • After the ruler departed, Yongde attended to Xuanzang, then hesitated at his door before Xuanzang invited him inside.
  • Yongde admitted he had neglected cultivation while managing temple affairs, and Xuanzang challenged his excuses and urged the monks to live simply and support themselves.
  • Xuanzang compared moonlight shining equally on palaces and fields, and Yongde listened, wept, and returned Xuanzang’s Buddhist salute.

Ch. 144Dwell on your own island, rely on yourself

After Yongde left, Wukong questioned whether Xuanzang had guided him too directly, and Xuanzang explained that people must awaken through their own hearts and efforts. As the group settled for the night, Little White Dragon was left gazing at the moon after Xuanzang urged him to understand and awaken for himself.

  • Yongde bowed to Wukong, Bajie, Little White Dragon, and Sha Wujing as he left Xuanzang’s room.
  • Wukong asked Xuanzang whether Yongde had truly awakened and argued that people should find their own way rather than depend on others.
  • Xuanzang said his teachings only nurtured a seed already within Yongde, and that living beings could guide one another without needing to meet him.
  • Bajie urged everyone to sleep, while Sha Wujing said a seed needed fertile soil and the right season to grow.
  • A-Hu bumped Little White Dragon’s shin, and Xuanzang told him to rely on himself and awaken for himself.
  • Wukong and Sha Wujing settled down to rest and chant, while Little White Dragon stood by the doorway gazing at the moon.

Ch. 145Born into privilege

Xuanzang’s party left Baolin Temple after Yongde thanked him and the Wuji Kingdom’s emperor bid them farewell. On the road, Bajie worried about Little White Dragon’s silence and argued with Wukong about whether privileged people were too proud to accept advice.

  • Yongde brought Xuanzang and his disciples breakfast, then wished them a safe journey as they left Baolin Temple.
  • The emperor of the Wuji Kingdom presented Xuanzang with his endorsed Travel Pass and asked him to return after fetching the scriptures.
  • Xuanzang told the emperor that following the bodhisattva’s teachings and keeping his vows meant he had already obtained the true scriptures.
  • The emperor bowed farewell, and Wukong and Bajie warned him not to return to his old ways.
  • As the party traveled onward, Bajie told Wukong that Little White Dragon’s silence worried him and remarked that people born into privilege often refused advice.

Ch. 146Four Foundations of Mindfulness

Wukong challenged Bajie’s assumptions about birth and ability, prompting Little White Dragon to reveal how overlooked and dispensable he had always felt. Xuanzang taught him to rely on both himself and the Dharma, then left him to find his own path.

  • Wukong told Bajie that his abilities came from hardship and practice, not his birth, and Sha Wujing agreed that cultivation depended on oneself.
  • Little White Dragon admitted to Xuanzang and his fellow disciples that he felt inadequate, overlooked, and dispensable, as he had in the Dragon Palace.
  • Xuanzang explained that worldly approval and other supports were unreliable, and taught Little White Dragon to rely on himself and the True Dharma.
  • Little White Dragon recalled the four foundations of mindfulness, and Xuanzang urged him to use them to understand and untie his own troubles.
  • Xuanzang told Little White Dragon that neither his master nor his fellow disciples could choose his remaining path for him; he had to rely on himself.

Ch. 147We Can't Do Without You

Little White Dragon accepted that his companions valued him before the pilgrims continued west. They encountered a dangerous mountain, where a child demon blocked their way and demanded that Xuanzang stay and play.

  • Xuanzang asked Wukong, Bajie, Sha Wujing, and A-Hu whether they thought Little White Dragon was unnecessary, and each showed that the group valued him.
  • Little White Dragon silently wept, then smiled and bowed to Xuanzang and his fellow disciples.
  • After traveling west for about half a month, the pilgrims reached a gloomy mountain, where Wukong sensed a demon approaching in a red cloud.
  • A child demon descended before the pilgrims, questioned Xuanzang about his journey, and demanded that he stay and play.
  • Xuanzang politely refused the child demon's terms, and the child grinned ominously.

Ch. 148How About Trying a Different Trick?

Wukong and the others continued through the mountains after Hong Yun threatened them and flew away. They recognized another child’s plea for help as a trick, but Xuanzang ordered Wukong and Bajie to stop mocking him and led the group onward, leaving the bound child behind.

  • Hong Yun threatened Wukong after he refused to play, then transformed into red light and left.
  • Wukong and the others continued along the mountain path and found a naked child tied to a dead pine tree.
  • Bajie guessed the child’s fabricated story and mocked him alongside Wukong, who exposed the likely abduction scheme.
  • Xuanzang reprimanded Wukong and Bajie for their taunts and ordered each to copy the Heart Sutra one hundred times.
  • Xuanzang led the group onward without freeing the child, who remained bound and alone in the tree.

Ch. 149Samadhi True Fire

The child freed himself and used the Mountain God and Earth God to alter the mountain paths, then attacked Xuanzang and his companions with samadhi true fire. The Five Elements Chariots trapped the travelers in the blaze, and Wukong turned back toward Xuanzang as A-Hu shielded him from a charging cart.

  • The child snapped his ropes with crimson sparks, burned down the pine, and summoned the Mountain God and Earth God.
  • Wukong recognized that the child had changed the mountain paths and tried to clear the yellow mist, but the child’s fire spread through it.
  • The child charged Wukong with a spear, and the two fought while flames engulfed the mountain.
  • Five Elements Chariots emerged from the fire and attacked Xuanzang’s group; Little White Dragon’s rain made the samadhi true fire burn more fiercely.
  • Bajie and Sha Wujing held back two chariots as A-Hu shielded Xuanzang and was burned; Wukong drove off the child and rushed back toward them.

Ch. 150...Taken by a Demon!

Wukong and the others fought the fire-wielding demons, but Little White Dragon was dragged underground while Xuanzang suffered from fire poison. Wukong summoned the mountain and earth gods to learn who the little demon was.

  • Wukong defeated the demon who breathed poisonous smoke and flames, then rushed back to help his companions.
  • Little White Dragon knocked the Five Elements Chariot away from Xuanzang, but an Earth-Traveling Chariot ambushed and injured him.
  • Wukong smashed the chariots, but Little White Dragon grabbed a demon’s hand reaching from the ground and was dragged underground.
  • Bajie used massage techniques to drive the fire poison from Xuanzang, while Wukong’s attack on the underground demon’s hiding place found it empty.
  • Wukong summoned the mountain and earth gods, learned that they served Six-Hundred-Li Drill Hao Mountain, and demanded to know the demon’s identity.

Ch. 151Red Boy, My Nephew?

Wukong learned that the demon who had abducted Little White was Red Boy, son of his sworn brother the Bull Demon King. After Xuanzang woke, Wukong promised to retrieve Little White, whether or not Red Boy recognized their family ties.

  • The mountain and earth gods told Wukong that Red Boy, the Bull Demon King's son, ruled from Fire Cloud Cave and had forced them to serve him.
  • Wukong realized Red Boy was his nephew because he had sworn brotherhood with the Bull Demon King five hundred years earlier.
  • Bajie and Sha Wujing worried that Red Boy might not recognize Wukong as family and could endanger Little White.
  • Xuanzang woke after recovering from the fire poison, and Wukong assured him he would rescue Little White.

Ch. 152Where Did They Go?!

Wukong found Fire Cloud Cave deserted and learned Red Boy had fled with Little White Dragon, so he sent the mountain and earth gods to search Hao Mountain. Underground, Little White Dragon woke in a cramped space beside the unconscious Red Boy.

  • Wukong left Xuanzang with Bajie and Sha Wujing and flew to Fire Cloud Cave to find Red Boy and Little White Dragon.
  • Wukong discovered the cave empty and learned from a hiding demon that Red Boy had escaped with the Five Elements Chariot and Fire-Tipped Spear after hearing Wukong had killed him.
  • Wukong ordered the mountain gods and earth gods to search Hao Mountain for Red Boy and Little White Dragon, then hurried back to report to Xuanzang and the others.
  • Red Boy tried to seize Xuanzang, but Little White Dragon grabbed his wrist, and the two plunged underground together before Red Boy created a small space and passed out.
  • Little White Dragon woke in the underground space, badly injured, and saw Red Boy lying unconscious nearby.

Ch. 153I'm not afraid!

Trapped underground and injured, Ao WujI and Red Boy recovered without access to spiritual energy and argued as they confronted their predicament. Ao WujI insisted that his master and fellow disciples would find them, leaving Red Boy speechless after asking who was looking for him.

  • Red Boy woke, threatened to kill Ao WujI, and tried to attack him, but his injuries left him coughing and unable to gather qi.
  • Ao WujI and Red Boy realized the earth around them blocked spiritual energy, leaving them too weak to escape.
  • Red Boy cursed Ao WujI and blamed him for their predicament, but Ao WujI ignored his outbursts.
  • Red Boy asked Ao WujI's name, learned it was Ao WujI, and introduced himself as Red Boy.
  • When Red Boy asked whether they would die underground, Ao WujI said his master and fellow disciples would find them and challenged Red Boy to name anyone searching for him.

Ch. 154He Will Come!

Wukong sought help from Ao Run to locate the captured Little White Dragon, and the West Sea Dragon King brought his troops to search Hao Mountain. Deep underground, Red Boy insisted that his father would come looking for him, while Little White Dragon reassured him that he believed it.

  • Wukong returned to Xuanzang and learned from his written suggestion to ask the Dragon Tribe to locate Little White Dragon.
  • Wukong went to the West Sea, where Ao Run used his secret art but could only sense his son faintly.
  • Ao Run rushed to Hao Mountain with Wukong and ordered his assembled sea troops to search every peak and cave.
  • Red Boy asked Little White Dragon whether his companions would find him, then insisted that his own father would come too.
  • Little White Dragon told Red Boy that he believed him, leaving Red Boy surprised before he turned away.

Ch. 155Fire and Water, Not Yet in Harmony

Ao Run’s search for Little White Dragon and Red Boy led the group to discover that the two were trapped deep in Hao Mountain’s earth veins, where only a harmony of water and samadhi true fire could reach them. Wukong flew to seek Red Boy’s father, while Ao Run and the West Sea troops began digging as they awaited a rescue.

  • Ao Run’s searches and the mountain gods’ reports found no trace of Little White Dragon until Ao Run used a bloodline secret art to locate him beneath the group.
  • The mountain gods tried to follow the golden light underground but could not descend far enough to reach the earth veins’ deepest reaches.
  • The old earth god explained that Red Boy’s samadhi true fire and Little White Dragon’s water nature had likely carried them underground through the cycling of the earth element.
  • Xuanzang wrote that the one who tied the bell must untie it, and Wukong set off for Banana Cave on Green Cloud Mountain to find Red Boy’s father.
  • Ao Run ordered the West Sea troops to dig into the pit and joined them himself.

Ch. 156Hariti Heaven

Ao Run and the gods dug through Hao Mountain to search for Red Boy while Sun Wukong flew to find Banana Cave. After Hariti Heaven warned him to spare Red Boy, Wukong reached Princess Iron Fan and learned the Bull Demon King had left her, then revealed that he had come because of Red Boy.

  • Ao Run reassured the mountain gods and earth gods that the West Sea Dragon Palace and Heavenly Court would compensate them, and they joined the digging.
  • Bajie questioned whether Sun Wukong really knew the route to Banana Cave, and Xuanzang silently shared his concern.
  • Sun Wukong flew south by mistake and met Hariti Heaven, who directed him northwest and asked him to spare Red Boy.
  • Sun Wukong reached Banana Cave, where Princess Iron Fan told him the Bull Demon King had moved to Cloud-Rubbing Cave and married Princess Jade Face.
  • Princess Iron Fan reacted fiercely when Sun Wukong said he had come because of Red Boy.

Ch. 157A mother's fault

After learning that Red Boy had become a bandit and trapped Xuanzang and Ao Run underground, Princess Iron Fan blamed herself and the Bull Demon King, then joined Wukong to help rescue them. She brought a seed of Red Boy’s Samadhi True Fire to Hao Mountain, apologized to Xuanzang and Ao Run, and prepared to follow the earth god’s instructions.

  • Wukong told Princess Iron Fan that Red Boy had become the Holy Infant Great King and had trapped Xuanzang and Ao Run underground.
  • Princess Iron Fan blamed herself for Red Boy’s misdeeds, cursed the Bull Demon King for sending their son away, and agreed to help rescue the captives.
  • Princess Iron Fan retrieved Red Boy’s Samadhi True Fire seed and insisted on accompanying Wukong to Hao Mountain to discipline her son and apologize.
  • At Withered Pine Ravine, Princess Iron Fan apologized to Xuanzang and Ao Run, who urged her to help with the rescue.
  • Wukong called for the earth god to explain what they should do next.

Ch. 158Water-Fire Golden Light Drill

The old earth god devised the Water-Fire Golden Light Drill, and Wukong, Ao Run, and Princess Iron Fan joined him to burrow underground and rescue Red Boy and Little White Dragon. Deep below, Red Boy worried that nobody was coming for them, but Little White Dragon insisted they had not been abandoned.

  • The old earth god presented his Water-Fire Golden Light Drill, with Wukong wielding the Golden Cudgel as its metal drill bit.
  • Wukong, Bajie, and Xuanzang praised the old earth god’s plan, and Ao Run urged them to begin the rescue.
  • Princess Iron Fan broke her crimson jewel to release Samadhi True Fire, enduring its scorching pain as she agreed to help save her son.
  • The old earth god combined Ao Run’s true dragon water and Princess Iron Fan’s Samadhi True Fire, forming the drill around himself, Wukong, Ao Run, and Princess Iron Fan.
  • The four plunged underground toward the deepest earth veins without leaving a hole behind.
  • Red Boy feared that nobody was searching for him and Little White Dragon, but Little White Dragon answered, “No.”

Ch. 159You're so lucky

Little White Dragon reassured Red Boy that his companions would come for him, prompting Red Boy to reveal how neglected and unwanted he felt by his parents. Little White Dragon recognized his own childhood in Red Boy and reached out to comfort him, leaving Red Boy startled and in tears.

  • Red Boy challenged Little White Dragon’s confidence that his companions would risk the Earth Veins to rescue him.
  • Little White Dragon admitted he had once felt useless but said his companions had told him they could not do without him.
  • Red Boy confessed that his parents rarely spent time with him and pushed him toward goals he did not want.
  • Red Boy said he had become powerful and wanted to become the strongest demon king so his parents would notice him.
  • Little White Dragon remembered seeking his own father’s attention as a child, then gently patted Red Boy’s head.
  • Red Boy recoiled from Little White Dragon, covered his forehead, and burst into tears.

Ch. 160Wuji, awaken to yourself

Little White Dragon helped Red Boy understand that his worth did not depend on being needed or approved of, but on choosing his own path and relying on himself. As he finished speaking beneath the earth, his eldest senior brother broke through the ceiling and arrived.

  • Little White Dragon asked Red Boy whether he needed to be needed, then explained how he had once feared he was useless to his companions.
  • Little White Dragon said he chose to remain with his master and fellow disciples because he wanted to, not because they needed him.
  • Little White Dragon taught Red Boy that self-reliance meant finding his own true heart and struggling upward like a seed pushing through the earth.
  • A thunderous crash sounded as the ceiling was torn open by a dark-gold Iron Cudgel.
  • Little White Dragon's eldest senior brother arrived and called out to reassure him.
