Since Taibai Jinxing had spoken, tacitly permitting him to vent his anger,
Chen Wei certainly wouldn't stand on ceremony. He would go after the Rain Directorate. In the Heavenly Court, big fish had always eaten small fish. Since the Rain Directorate had dared to hand him a knife, it had better be prepared for him to turn around and bite.
Before biting, however, he had to find out just how many teeth the other side had.
Pang Long knew this business well.
"My lord, I've looked into it." Pang Long opened the Case Files and reported, "The Rain Directorate's Chief Official, Jin Chuan, is an accomplished Golden Immortal. He usually keeps a low profile and smiles at every immortal he meets. His backer is Tao Rong, one of the Thunder Department's Five Thunder Marshals. He once served in the Thunder Department, then was recommended by Tao Rong and transferred to the Rain Directorate as its Chief Official."
Chen Wei nodded.
The Thunder Department was one of the Heavenly Court's powerful offices, and the Five Thunder Marshals wielded real authority.
That connection did warrant a measure of respect.
Pang Long smiled and lowered his voice. "My lord, Jin Chuan has another connection. He's Hou Zong's cousin!"
Hou Zong.
At that name, Chen Wei's eyelid twitched slightly. It all became clear.
Back when he had risen through the ranks, leapfrogging Hou Zong to become an Inspector of Tongming Hall, that fellow had been sent to the Mortal Realm to undergo tribulations.
They called it undergoing tribulations, but it was really exile.
With that piece in place, the logic was simple.
Jin Chuan had risked offending Tongming Hall by handing over those trap-laden documents purely to vent his cousin's anger-and dig a pit for Chen Wei along the way.
Why had he dared?
