Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Ash Fog (灰雾) |
| Alias(es) | Gray fog 1 |
| Type | Supernatural environmental phenomenon that obscures vision and disrupts direction 4 10 |
| Location | Encountered across the Ash Fog World, including hills, forests, mountains, and high-altitude airspace 10 27 29 34 |
| First Appearance | Mentioned in the opening declarations; directly encountered by the eleven surviving Pioneers after their second transfer 1 4 |
Properties
Visibility and Appearance
- Ordinary visibility: No more than ten meters; objects beyond that distance become blurred or disappear into the gray mist 4 10.
- Transcendent vision: Lin Shan remains subject to the ten-meter limit after attaining Transcendence. Heart Light cannot disperse the fog or improve his sight when concentrated in his eyes 22.
- Moonlight: The Red Moon remains visible despite the overhead fog, casting faint red ripples across it 27.
- High-altitude anomaly: Mountains appear visible at immense distances even where the fog is denser, not thinner. Lin Shan cannot explain this contradiction 29.
Directional Disorientation
The fog alters a traveler's perceived direction rather than demonstrably transporting them elsewhere 10.
- After stepping into it, Lin Shan cannot return to the cleared area simply by stepping backward 10.
- A traveler may believe they are moving straight while actually deviating from their route; repeated corrections are necessary 10.
- Horses lose their bearings just as humans do 24.
- The effect can isolate nearby territories: Lin Shan notes that two races less than ten kilometers apart might never meet unless their territories collide 38.
Pressure at Altitude
- During his mountain ascent, Lin Shan experiences increasing pressure, heavier spirituality consumption, and difficulty breathing. He identifies the fog itself as the source rather than altitude sickness 29.
- After absorbing Blood Wing, he flies at ten thousand meters while resisting the fog's pressure. He encounters neither anomalies nor Fallen along that stretch, though flight still consumes his supernatural power 34.
Navigation and Countermeasures
| Method | Effect | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Parchment | Tracks Lin Shan's position and destinations, allowing him to detect directional drift and correct his course 10. | Does not itself clear the fog; Lin Shan still needs another means of seeing approaching hazards 10 27. |
| Red Lantern | Initially grants sight through nearly two hundred meters of fog; later provides a four-hundred-meter field of vision 11 22. | Requires blood as lamp oil. When its damaged form is recovering, Lin Shan's visibility returns to ten meters 11 27. |
| Clan Artifact | Dispels the surrounding fog and maintains a golden boundary. The Human Race's Jade Tome initially clears a ten-kilometer radius 4 10. | Has no offensive abilities, and its barrier moves with it. Clearing fog does not eliminate every anomaly 16 18. |
| Spirit Marker | Provides a fixed spiritual target, allowing explorers to find their way despite losing their sense of direction 49. | Its range is theoretically infinite only with sufficient spirituality 49. |
| Giant Ship's passage | The wind stirred by the ship temporarily scatters fog for nearly a kilometer around it 11. | An incidental effect of a dangerous encounter, not a controlled navigation method 11. |
Clan Territory and Cleared Areas
- Clan Artifacts condense from a race's collective fortune. Once a settlement reaches a sufficient population, an artifact projection can form; its effectiveness depends on population 17.
- The Human Race's cleared range expands after more humans arrive 34.
- Fog rushes back into a ruined settlement when its Beastskin Book Clan Artifact shatters 26.
- The Purple Soul Flower Forest is specifically described as unaffected by the fog, making it a place where the Pioneers can remain during their advancement 23.
Hazards
The fog conceals supernatural creatures and dangerous phenomena, but their attacks are distinct from its documented effects on sight and direction 10 24.
| Hazard | Documented encounter |
|---|---|
| Supernatural beasts and Fallen | Lin Shan encounters fighting supernatural beasts, aggressive mantises, and a white-furred gorilla capable of meeting his Heart Light spear with its fist 12 24 27. |
| Nighttime darkness | Darkness descends from above the fog and repeatedly assaults the Red Lantern's protective barrier 12 13. |
| Uncanny entities | An enormous eye pulls Lin Shan's soul from his body; a terrifying old man exhausts the lantern's remaining oil with a single look 13. |
| Hidden anomalous terrain | A sea of bones reduces Lin Shan's horse to a skeleton before it collapses 24. |
| Colossal creatures | A gigantic Fallen passes through the fog. Its footprint is later measured at 150 kilometers long, and Lin Shan finds a city flattened along its route 24 25 27. |
- Quiet does not guarantee safety: An unknown being's lingering influence accompanies an unusually uneventful journey. Dangerous entities begin stirring again once that suppressive force is gone 23 24.
- Clearing the fog is not complete protection: The Specter Thread Fish remains a nighttime danger inside the Human Race's cleared area 16.
- Moving a barrier can attract attacks: During migration, the Clan Artifact's boundary disturbs anomalies and Fallen it sweeps over. Dispersing the fog also removes a natural layer of concealment 40 42 44.
Cosmological Significance
- The opening declarations describe the fog as both the origin and graveyard of Transcendence, and contrast rulers above it with living beings imprisoned beneath it 1 3.
- According to the Parchment, Earth humanity will entirely cross into the Ash Fog Universe within a millennium, after which Earth itself will merge into that universe 6.
- The Cat Clan reports that humans will arrive throughout the boundless world, not solely near the Pioneers' settlement. Those arriving outside protected territory may encounter lethal anomalies immediately 17.
- The terrifying old man's fragmented words connect the fog's descent with mourning, bloodshed, and a sovereign's death; the passage does not explain the event he describes 13.
Story Role
The Pioneers' Arrival
The eleven survivors first directly encounter the fog after an altar transports them out of the mysterious hall. Their Jade Tome activates on its own, dispersing the mist and establishing the cleared area from which they begin exploring 4 5.
Lin Shan's Expeditions
Lin Shan's search for a cure forces him beyond the cleared boundary, where he discovers the fog's directional distortion and acquires the Red Lantern. He later escorts seven Pioneers through it to the Purple Soul Flower Forest before undertaking a much longer solitary expedition 10 11 22 23.
Human Migration and Exploration
Moving humanity through the fog proves far more dangerous than traveling alone. An earlier relocation costs over two thousand lives in less than three kilometers; during Lin Shan's later migration, more than ten thousand people die over forty kilometers 40 44.
After settlement, exploration becomes an organized responsibility of the Military Department's Exploration Division. Chen Liyun explains the Spirit Marker technique used to guide expeditions home, while planned journeys seek medicinal herbs and other resources 48 49.
