The two of them passed through the small gate and entered Nittel Royal City.
The gate slowly closed behind them. Renato did not look back, his gaze resting on the street ahead.
The streets of the Royal City were broad, level avenues paved with stone slabs. Unlike the haphazard buildings of Fried City's Inner District, those on either side had been laid out according to a municipal plan, neatly arrayed with sensible spacing between them.
In the distance, a pristine white Mage Tower stood at the center of the city. It pierced the clouds, its top lost from sight, and shone with a cold white light beneath the dim sky, as though pinning the entire city to the ground.
It had the typical shape of a Mage Tower: no windows, a broad base that gradually narrowed toward the top, and all manner of Magic Runes inscribed on its walls...

Yet the tower before him was taller than the landmark buildings he had seen in major cities before crossing over. Its soaring presence made him feel small despite himself.
Was this the power of magic? Could it create such an astonishing marvel in this backward age?
No, wait. Renato suddenly realized something. How could I have missed such a conspicuous building when I was outside the city?
He had distinctly remembered studying the city, including the gatehouse, the flags, and the soldiers on the walls... there was no way he could have missed
