Background / History
Lailas trained under a mentor and took three months to learn how to enter a meditative state. She describes becoming a ranger as a gradual process of developing inner balance and a personal connection with nature, rather than completing a ritual or killing a particular monster 35 36.
In Fried City, she works at the Silver Deer Inn, a predominantly half-elf establishment. Although her equipment and access to magical resources make Renato question her finances, she insists that she genuinely is poor and needs her waitress’s wages. She initially refuses to reveal her full identity, promising that he will understand when the time is right 32 33 34 36. She eventually identifies herself as Lailas Forestsong, a Bright Lamp of the Harpers 91.
Youth and Training under Elna
Lailas was born in Fried City when it was still under Falania’s rule, before the construction of the Outer City Wall and the emergence of the Slums. As a young half-elf, she experienced frequent prejudice, contempt, and unprovoked beatings. She briefly belonged to a gang, which she retrospectively describes as little more than a group of idle youths 71.
After unspecified conflicts drove her to leave the city, she encountered starving dire wolves on a forest path and nearly died fleeing them. The druid Elna Lingge rescued her and sheltered her in a hut formed from living trees and vines. Elna became a parental figure as well as her mentor, teaching her to understand nature through direct observation and sensory experience rather than books 71 103.
During Fried City’s war for self-rule, the newly trained ranger protected a refugee camp at the woodland’s edge. She helped fortify its defenses, taught its inhabitants to set traps, and drove away predators. The villagers called her the Guardian of the Woods, giving her a sense of acceptance she had not experienced before. A young girl named Mila presented her with a wildflower garland, and Lailas promised to protect the camp 103.
When increasingly dangerous beasts attacked the refugees, Elna ordered Lailas to abandon them, calling their suffering nature’s lesson to humanity. She forcibly restrained Lailas with vines and took her back to the treehouse. Lailas escaped the following morning, only to find the camp destroyed and Mila and the other inhabitants slaughtered. A dying survivor revealed that Elna was a core member of the Shadow Druid Circle who had driven the beasts mad and summoned the destructive thorns. The survivor entrusted Lailas with a Harpers Badge and asked her to seek senior Harpers in Falania 103.
Lailas confronted Elna, who openly described civilization as a tumor that nature could heal only through its destruction. Pretending to accept this belief, Lailas poisoned their final supper’s flower tea with Mage’s Bane, then repeatedly stabbed Elna before she could cast a spell. She buried her mentor without a headstone and left the forest with the Harpers Badge, never returning 103.
Return to Fried City
Lailas remembers the oppressive taxation imposed by Falania’s royal officials and the hopes associated with Caspar Reisingen’s struggle for independence. She later became disillusioned by the city’s inequality, guild exploitation, and the transformation of its guards into extortionists. Unable to accept that those who overthrew tyranny had become tyrants themselves, she returned and remained in the city as a waitress, ranger, and clandestine operative 75.
Her Harper group later voted to accept a noble’s commission. She reluctantly cooperated with the Atwood Family in the search for Caspar, while warning Renato that the work offered neither money nor honor. The arrangement restricted her ability to pursue the disappearances, since Baron Atwood prioritized Caspar’s whereabouts and the political balance over the welfare of the poor 55 70.
Appearance
Lailas has a slender build, fair, fine skin, and a face combining elven delicacy with softer human features 32 36.
- Hair: Long and pale green; tied into a ponytail when armed 32 35.
- Eyes: Hazel, slightly elongated, and tilted upward at the corners 36.
- Ears: Pointed, usually concealed beneath her hair while working at the inn 32.
- Armed appearance: Fitted leather armor, a slender sword at each hip, and a noticeably sharper gaze than her customary waitress demeanor 32.
- Later disguises: Adopts a restaurant waitress’s appearance while watching over Renato and later appears with an unfamiliar face and an Atwood-crested surcoat; Renato attributes the latter transformation to another Disguise Self scroll 76 85.
Personality
Lailas shifts readily between a reserved, professionally pleasant manner and playful familiarity. She teases Renato about his youth, noble upbringing, and curiosity about her age, but becomes serious when teaching him ranger skills 32 33 35 36.
She presents concern for the missing people’s families as her reason for investigating the slums. Despite the danger, she wants to prevent further disappearances and repeatedly gives Renato the opportunity to withdraw. Her secrecy complicates that apparent compassion: she withholds information about herself and the case, and her assurances about sparing innocent people are notably qualified 32 41 42.
Her approach to weapons is practical rather than recreational. She sees their purpose as killing, questions Renato’s enthusiasm for sparring, and insists on wooden substitutes instead of live blades 35.
Lailas’s opposition to exploitation is deeply personal. She rejects the idea that independence is meaningful when the powerful continue to prey on the weak, and she credits Renato’s apparent kindness, bravery, and selflessness with restoring her hope for Fried City. Her admiration rests partly on an incomplete understanding of his motives 75.
Her sense of justice also permits extreme measures. Reggie acknowledges this tendency, while Lailas herself defends the Harpers’ intervention against unchecked magical power and potential tyranny. She treats the possibility that a present-day hero might become a future tyrant as justification for preventive action 89 91.
The massacre caused by Elna becomes central to her uncompromising creed: “Sacrifice the few to save the many.” She has repeatedly chosen to kill corrupted companions and fallen friends, and her resolve extends even to sacrificing innocents. During her final fight, she recognizes that Renato might have another explanation for his dark magic, but refuses to let uncertainty prevent her from acting against a perceived threat 103.
Abilities & Skills
Dual-Weapon Swordsmanship
Lailas uses two slender swords with evasive footwork, precise deflections, and coordinated attacks 32 35.
- Redirects Renato’s stronger blows and counters with thrusts toward exposed areas 35.
- Adjusts her posture while being thrown and retrieves a fallen practice stick with her foot 35.
- Can be overwhelmed at close range: Renato pins her arms and forces a surrender with an armored chokehold during their sparring 35.
- Critiques Renato’s footwork and limited use of feints, recommends a high guard to exploit his height and strength, and repeatedly targets his hands during training 72.
- Later acknowledges that Renato has surpassed her in swordsmanship, despite her many years of practice 75.
- Uses Zephyr Strike to change speed abruptly, evade his blade, and attack his throat from unexpected angles. She also delivers a magically supported kick to his breastplate and flips backward to disengage 102 103.
- Exploits her familiarity with Renato’s stance and reactions during their final duel, although his protective force field prevents her throat strikes from killing him 103.
Ranger Magic
Her magic comes from her bond with the wilderness rather than a mage’s spellcasting discipline 35.
- Zephyr Strike: Creates a supporting breeze that makes movement feel easier; normally channels magic into a weapon to increase its damage 35. In lethal combat, it sharply increases her speed and surrounds her blades with a pale blue-green glow 102 103.
- Simple casting: Demonstrates Zephyr Strike with an Elvish word meaning “west wind,” without accompanying gestures 35.
- Initially stated limits: Describes her own spells as mostly comparable to bard cantrips and explicitly says she cannot throw fireballs. Her discussion of archmage-like master hunters does not establish that level of power for herself 35. Later battles reveal a wider and more destructive repertoire than this initial explanation suggests 75 97 103.
- Nature-energy manifestation: Produces a ball of emerald-green primordial magic in her palm to help Renato seek resonance with nature 71.
- Flame Arrows: A ranger spell that ignites arrows and causes them to explode after impact. She uses it to kill outlaws and cultists and to destroy a cult magic circle 75 96. She can also ignite an arrow thrown by hand, using the resulting explosion as a distraction 102.
- Spectral bows: Transforms her shortbow into more than a dozen spectral bows behind her. They fire together, producing a rain of arrows formed from magical force that clears a path through a crowd of cultists 97.
- Entangle: Uses a vine-based restraint spell against Renato and later demands that he submit to it before being examined for corruption by a cleric of Torm. His shadow shield withers the attacking vines 102.
- Wind and storm magic: Summons a gale and later a storm that lifts sand and stones into a swirling barrier. She uses its cover and air currents to circle behind Renato for a killing attack; the spell’s name is not disclosed 102 103.
- Casting under pressure: Is accustomed to casting while attacked, completing her storm spell despite flying debris and earlier interruptions 102 103.
Meditation and Instruction
Lailas teaches meditation as a way to remain alert while relieving fatigue 35.
- Guides Renato through breathing, calming his thoughts, and sensing nature’s energy 36.
- Recognizes his aptitude when he enters a meditative state the day after her first proper lesson 36.
- Continues teaching practical ranger techniques during breaks from her inn duties 43.
- Explains that meditation deepens understanding of nature and that comprehending one’s own Way of Balance is necessary to command ranger magic 71.
- Attempts to guide Renato into contact with her nature energy. When it recoils from him, she attributes his difficulty to nerves and impatience rather than accepting that nature has rejected him 71.
- Teaches monster anatomy and tactics, including ogres’ limited intelligence, their guarded legs, and the value of targeting their eyes 71.
- Warns against careless magical experimentation after Reggie’s failed attempts to improve Mending scrolls 74.
Investigation, Disguise, and Infiltration
Lailas combines detailed local intelligence with convincing cover identities 32 33 41.
- Knows the Wolf Gang’s leadership, business divisions, and the location of Solas’s private document lounge 32.
- Revises a casino floor plan after noticing changes since the previous year 33.
- Guides Renato’s successful dice bets and explains that the dealer controls the games; her exact method of predicting the results remains unexplained 33.
- Passes as a hired companion during reconnaissance and later slips upstairs in a casino waitress’s uniform without attracting attention 33 41.
- Claims her half-elf senses are naturally sharper, citing them as useful for detective work 32.
- Identifies Lord Orton as the Wolf Gang’s patron and analyzes the possible cooperation between him and Baron Atwood in the search for Caspar 70.
- Secretly watches over Renato’s meeting with Solas and reports that she has checked the food and wine for poison 76.
- Obtains intelligence about the Atwood succession dispute, including Sir Eric’s control of the family’s forces and Perez’s identity as his son 85.
- Recognizes a black ring and human-skin products as signs of the Dakoul Cult 88.
- Coordinates Harper searches through gestures and animal companions, dividing forces to cover Shantytown efficiently 95.
Archery, Animal Companions, and Mobility
- Archery: Demonstrates speed and accuracy sufficient to shoot three people dead in a short engagement at the hunting lodge. Later kills Reggie with shots through his heart and skull after persuading him to lower his guard 75 96.
- Animal communication: Receives a bird’s report that both living and dead people are present at the hunting lodge. Animal messengers also support communication during the cult investigation 74 89 95.
- Night vision: Can see in the dark, as Renato can 95.
- Agility and climbing: Leaps from walls, scales a two-story wooden building using her hands and feet, and runs along a low wall as easily as level ground 91 95 97.
- Rescue under attack: Lifts Perly by her collar and carries her onto a rooftop with several nimble leaps while cultists surround them 97.
- Ritual awareness: Senses that the heart of the Dakoul Descent Ritual lies deeper in the Slums 97.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Two finely crafted slender swords — Carried at either side of her waist 32.
- Fitted leather armor — Apparently custom-made, contributing to Renato’s doubts about her claimed income 32.
- Disguise Self scroll — Part of her proposed plan to enter the Gilded Dice as a human maid 32. Renato later believes she has used another such scroll while wearing an Atwood-crested surcoat 85.
- Maps and parchment plans — Used to identify the target, update its layout, and brief Renato 32 33 41.
- Reconnaissance costume — Tight red leather dress, worn fishnet stockings, conspicuous makeup, jingling copper ornaments, and cheap perfume 33.
- Shortbow and quiver — Used during wilderness investigations and the fighting in Shantytown; the bow also serves in her spectral-bow magic 74 95 97 102.
- Training equipment — Uses a metal helmet, gambeson, and steel training swords borrowed from the Security Department for Renato’s tournament preparation 72.
- Harpers Badge — Entrusted to her by the dying survivor of the refugee-camp massacre; she carries it away after killing Elna 103.
- Mage’s Bane — A poison specifically designed for spellcasters, used to disable Elna before stabbing her 103.
- Veronica Brightstone’s recommendation letter — Gives it to Perly as an opportunity to pursue academy study, explicitly denying that the gift depends on Renato joining the Harpers 91 92.
Relationships
- Renato de Fernando — Investigative partner and ranger student. Their cooperation develops through mutual suspicion, teasing, sparring, and lessons; she initially withholds her identity from him 32 33 35 36 42. She temporarily moves into Fragrant Words to watch over him, asking that he warn her before major actions, and their relationship becomes physically intimate. She praises him as a source of renewed hope but considers a lasting relationship impractical because of her age and dangerous, unsettled life 70 75 78. After revealing her Harper identity, she invites him to join, but he postpones a decision 91 92. Their partnership ends when she interprets his flesh-covered armor and shadow magic as evidence of corruption. He refuses her demand to disarm, and their ensuing duel ends with his killing her 102 103 104.
- Perly — Initially distrusts Lailas and suspects ulterior motives. Lailas nevertheless supports allowing her to gain experience by assisting outside the casino 33 36 41. Perly’s suspicion continues through the political and cult investigations and becomes explicit hostility when Lailas identifies herself as a Harper. Lailas nevertheless gives her Veronica Brightstone’s recommendation without conditions and later rescues her from surrounding cultists 55 87 89 91 92 97.
- Silver Deer Inn supervisor — Oversees her shifts and leave. Returns Renato’s offered tip and checks that Lailas is accompanying him voluntarily 34.
- Solas “Gold Tooth” — Principal investigative target. Lailas selects his casino lounge for its concealed records and later identifies his involvement in the disappearances 32 42. She covertly protects Renato during his later restaurant meeting with Solas 76.
- Elna Lingge — Rescuer, druid mentor, and parental figure who introduces her to nature. After discovering Elna’s role in the refugee-camp massacre and her membership in the Shadow Druid Circle, Lailas poisons and kills her. The memory shapes Lailas’s willingness to sacrifice loved ones to prevent greater harm 71 103.
- Mila and the refugee villagers — People Lailas protected early in her ranger career. Their gratitude gave her her first experience of admiration and respect; their deaths become a formative trauma 103.
- Reggie — Bard and longtime associate whom she saved eleven years earlier. He respects her and defends her sense of justice while admitting that her methods can be extreme 74 89 91. She becomes alarmed when he misses an appointment, but later kills him after finding that he is protecting children corrupted by Dakoul and has opposed two Harpers who died in the courtyard 91 96.
- Baron Atwood and Albert — Political authorities with whom her organization temporarily cooperates. She helps search for Caspar and Orton, but objects to the priorities that prevent meaningful action on the disappearances 55 70 88.
- Kira — Fellow participant in the anti-cult operation. Lailas criticizes her shouted messages as a security risk; Kira later describes Lailas as approachable and easier to speak with than Master Echo 91 92.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Slum Disappearances Investigation
- Recruiting Renato: Encountered armed in the slums, Lailas claims to be searching for missing relatives on private commissions. She offers Renato half the payment, and his guide generates a joint investigation quest worth two silver coins and 4,000 experience points 32.
- Gilded Dice reconnaissance: Poses as Renato’s hired companion, surveys the casino, and updates its floor plan. She proposes waiting for open conflict between the Wolf Gang and Iron Fist Gang to reduce the casino’s guard presence 33 34.
- Document operation: Arranges to replace a casino waitress, saying the woman will disappear for roughly a month while denying that she has killed her. Renato creates a disturbance, allowing Lailas to reach the upper floor unnoticed 41.
- Discovery: Returns with records linking Solas to purchases of basic food and crude clothing, which she interprets as supplies for keeping captive, expendable people alive. She warns that he may serve interests beyond the Wolf Gang and leaves to gather more information 42.
- Political obstruction: After Renato obtains additional receipts covering two years of purchases, she suggests examining events from that period but says she cannot currently assist. Baron Atwood’s search for Caspar takes precedence over the missing poor 70.
- Cult connection: While searching the sixth suspected hideout with Renato and City Guards, she recognizes evidence in a letter as belonging to the Dakoul Cult and hurries to find detective Aldo 88.
Renato’s Ranger Training
- First lessons: Reveals her ranger identity after their sparring session and agrees to teach Renato in exchange for dinner 35.
- Continuing instruction: Coaches his meditation, praises his unusually rapid progress, and later supplements the lessons with practical ranger tricks 36 43.
- Nature-magic guidance: Teaches him about ogres and attempts to help him establish contact with primordial energy. When the energy recoils from him, she encourages patience and recounts how Elna taught her to understand nature 71.
- Tournament preparation: Resumes intensive sparring in the public gardens, offering specific advice about footwork, feints, and high-guard attacks while using borrowed City Guard training equipment 72.
Atwood Cooperation and the Reisingen Search
- Departure for the inner city: Announces that she will leave for work connected to a noble’s commission and warns Renato and Perly to avoid the inner city. She expresses discomfort with her organization’s decision to undertake the assignment 55.
- Warning about Orton: Reveals that Lord Orton backs the Wolf Gang and that she is helping Baron Atwood locate Caspar Reisingen. She suspects that apparent hostility between Atwood and Orton may conceal cooperation in the search 70.
- Temporary cohabitation: Agrees to move into Fragrant Words and monitor political developments for Renato, on the condition that he inform her before making major moves 70.
- Hunting-lodge investigation: Recruits Renato to investigate a Reisingen hideout north of Fried City, offering a magic scroll; his guide lists a 1,000-experience reward. After fighting outlaws at the abandoned hunting lodge, they find no useful clues despite her insistence on searching the surrounding area 72 74 75.
- Declaration of purpose: Explains why she returned to resist the city’s exploitation and tells Renato that he has restored her hope. Their relationship becomes physically intimate, although she later emphasizes its practical difficulties 75 78.
- Solas meeting: Disguises herself as a waitress to watch over Renato during his tense lunch with Solas. She assures him that the food and wine are not poisoned, but he still takes a universal toxin diluent as a precaution 76.
- Martial-law warning: Covertly informs Renato that Sir Eric has claimed the Atwood lands and gained most of the family’s forces. She explains the Baron’s fear of returning to his territory and reveals that Perez is Eric’s son 85.
Harper Revelation and the Dakoul Descent Ritual
- Open identification: During the siege, reports that Reggie and two young men sent to find him have not returned. She reveals her full name and Bright Lamp rank, invites Renato into the Harpers, and gives Perly Veronica Brightstone’s academy recommendation 91.
- Invitation postponed: Accepts Renato’s request for more time and leaves the recommendation with Perly, stressing that it is neither leverage nor conditional on his membership 92.
- Mobilizing allies: Raids Orton’s temporary residence and later arrives with eight Harpers, including a cleric of Lathander. She reports weak defenses at the Wolf Gang’s South Intersection and joins Renato’s force in advancing toward Shantytown to prevent Dakoul’s descent 94.
- Dividing the search: Assigns three Harpers and the cleric to accompany the Iron Fist Gang, sends the remaining five Harpers east, and joins Renato’s squad in the west. Animal companions provide communication between the search groups 95.
- Killing Reggie: Finds Reggie defending corrupted children in a courtyard containing the bodies of the two missing Harpers. She persuades him that she will seek help for the children, then shoots him through the heart and skull when he lowers his guard 96.
- Destroying a subsidiary circle: Uses Flame Arrows to kill the kneeling cultists and shatter their magic circle, but the ritual continues. Countless hooded, candle-bearing cultists surround the group as the sky becomes completely dark 96.
- Escape from the crowd: Uses spectral bows to open a path, rescues Perly, and helps the group reach a courtyard. After sensing the ritual’s heart deeper in the Slums, she separates with Perly while Renato and Gorlag escape by another route 97.
Final Confrontation and Death
After Renato destroys the ritual, Lailas encounters him covered in grotesque flesh-and-blood armor. She attacks with vines, then recognizes shadow energy in his defensive spell. Rejecting his claim that he remains mentally uncorrupted, she demands that he put down his weapon and submit to Entangle so that a cleric of Torm can examine him. She offers to apologize if he proves innocent, but Renato refuses to surrender because he bears Dakoul’s mark and fears being condemned 102.
Lailas begins the fight with an explosive arrow feint, then closes with her twin swords under Zephyr Strike. Their familiarity with each other’s swordsmanship makes the battle emotionally painful, but she repeatedly separates affection from her judgment of danger. Recalling Elna’s betrayal and the refugee massacre, she resolves not to let hesitation cause another tragedy 102 103.
Although she admits to herself that Renato’s magic might have another explanation, she convinces herself that the real Renato is dead and that her opponent is a Dakoul Cultist wearing his skin. She summons a storm, circles behind him, and commits to an empowered strike at the back of his head. Renato defeats and kills her, then reunites with Perly and escapes the fallen city through a hidden passage 103 104.

Trivia
- Her exact age is never disclosed. She jokes that she is probably old enough to be Renato’s grandmother, but rejects his guess of ninety 33 36. Her later account establishes that she was already young before Fried City’s independence, more than half a century earlier 71 75.
- Despite her elven ancestry, she says she knows only a handful of Elvish words 34.
- She explains that the Silver Deer Inn’s “Elf Beer” is actually sweet beer brewed in the traditional Fried City style, not an elven recipe 34.
- She admits to setting aside roast-pig ribs before serving a customer’s order to prevent “waste,” then offers Renato extra lunches after he suspects she did the same to his meal 34.
- She initially regarded Renato suspiciously because few ordinary humans stayed at the half-elf inn and he was accompanied by a young girl, leading her to suspect inappropriate tastes 34.
- Her early title, Guardian of the Woods, was bestowed by the refugee villagers rather than presented as a formal ranger rank 103.
- The high-guard stance Renato uses during their final duel is one she had personally recommended to him 72 103.
