Background / History
Search and Discovery
Heavenly Insect’s original body owner traveled hundreds of millions of miles from the Spirit Insect Tribe to the Northern Spiritual Realm to find the silkworm. His parents’ scroll identified it as a legendary insect and exposed the lethal consequences of its supposedly beneficial parasitism. He nevertheless hoped the tribe’s insect-control methods could tame it and overcome his mediocre aptitude 5.
After a month searching the Black Nether Abyss, Heavenly Insect discovered an underground nest containing more than a hundred high-grade spirit insects living together without fighting. The nest concealed Golden Cicada’s dark golden Light Cocoon, with the surrounding insects serving as guards during its transformation 9 10 11.
Life-Bound Contract
Golden Cicada resisted the intrusion by directing its guards and seizing part of Heavenly Insect’s bee swarm. Its golden control light clashed with his Blood Soul Array, destroying the souls of many contested insects and leaving eight surviving high-grade insects under his control 11 12.
Heavenly Insect recovered for three months, then spent another three months forcing a blood net through the cocoon. Golden Cicada finally weakened its resistance after he promised accelerated growth and protection during future vulnerable transformations. It also recognized that the Six-Winged Golden Cicada’s inherited reputation could make it a target throughout the Great Thousand World 12.
The completed bloodline contract exchanged traces of their origin energy. Golden Cicada angrily accused Heavenly Insect of stealing, while the energy he received strengthened his body and enabled his breakthrough into the Heaven Fusion Realm. Its cocoon subsequently settled inside his Qi Sea 13.
Partnership and Cultivation
Golden Cicada adopted its preferred name and negotiated a fifty-fifty split of the energy obtained by refining Heavenly Insect’s resources. Their first demonstrated use of this arrangement involved a high-grade Blood-Colored Giant Wolf essence 14 15.
During the Insect Prison expedition, it protected Heavenly Insect from hazardous mist, located valuable resources, and refined the seal imprisoning a Nine Revolutions Black-Whiskered Mosquito. It later returned stored energy that helped him reach the Heaven Transformation Realm 17 18 20 21 29.
In Flying Spirit City, the pair continued cultivating with supreme spirit liquid and other resources. When Heavenly Insect’s advancement stalled, Golden Cicada identified his insufficient integration of externally supplied energy and taught him the Golden Cicada Rebirth Art. He subsequently completed the art’s first cycle while Golden Cicada remained cocooned 35 36 41.
Appearance
Golden Cicada’s body remains concealed inside a dark golden Light Cocoon taller than a person 11 12.
- Pulsing radiance: The cocoon brightens and dims like a heartbeat, revealing faint shadows of the insect within 11.
- Silkworm form: Species records describe the Golden Origin Heavenly Silkworm as thumb-sized; this is not a direct measurement of the cocooned individual 5.
- Future cicada form: The Six-Winged Golden Cicada is famed for six wings resembling throwing knives and an immensely hard shell 5.
Personality
Golden Cicada is intelligent, outspoken, and intensely food-driven. It treats spiritual treasures as meals, argues over ownership, and repeatedly demands a larger share of refined energy. Despite human-level intelligence, its confinement to the underground nest left it inexperienced with the outside world and vulnerable to Heavenly Insect’s bargaining 14 17 18.
It is proud of its abilities and quick to protest being dismissed as a glutton or having its inherited art criticized. Its quarrels with Heavenly Insect include threats, teasing, and complaints about their original contract, but it also supports their shared survival. It lets him recognize a cultivation problem himself, while stating that it would have stopped supplying energy before he went too far 13 20 36 41.
Abilities & Skills
Devouring and Spiritual-Energy Refinement
Golden Cicada inherits the Six-Winged Golden Cicada’s ability to devour and refine substances, including spirit beast essence 14.
- Refines a high-grade spirit beast essence in just over half a day; Heavenly Insect’s half-share equals approximately two months of his previous cultivation 15.
- Devours the crystalline seal around the Nine Revolutions Black-Whiskered Mosquito, eventually releasing the imprisoned insect 18 21.
- Removes the spirituality from supreme spirit liquid, producing energy that Heavenly Insect can absorb below the Sovereign level 30.
- Requires more than half a month to digest a single drop of supreme spirit liquid in its current state 30.
- Can retain Heavenly Insect’s share of refined energy and release it when he is ready to cultivate 21 29.
Insect Control
Its golden light can command other spirit insects and contest a Spirit Insect Master’s control techniques 11 12.
- Maintains a defensive force of high-grade insects around its cocoon 11.
- Shatters an existing control talisman inside a Devouring Spirit Bee and turns the bee against Heavenly Insect 11.
- Contends with the Blood Soul Array, although the struggle destroys many of the affected insects’ souls 12.
- Cannot safely select excessively powerful guards during its vulnerable cocooned stage, since they might escape its control and devour it 11.
Spiritual Perception
Golden Cicada detects desirable resources as enticing “food” and guides Heavenly Insect toward them 17.
- Senses a valuable source southeast of their position and later directs him toward a location 120 li away 17.
- Locates a spirit-liquid pool and detects a mature mosquito sealed beneath it 18.
- Identifies a treasure-rich valley within Sword Peak, leading Heavenly Insect to a sixth-grade golden crystal jade lotus 20.
- Possesses inherited memories, but those memories do not contain evolution information for an ordinary ice silkworm 38.
Golden Protective Halo
Golden Cicada projects a halo that stops approximately three inches beyond Heavenly Insect’s skin 17.
- Completely excludes Kongsang Mountain’s dense red mist 17.
- Shields him from the chilling wind inside the yin-energy-filled cave 17.
- Provides defensive support while cocooned, despite lacking direct combat ability in that state 18 20.
Life-Bound Connection and Origin Power
The contract links Golden Cicada and Heavenly Insect through bloodline, consciousness, and lifeline 12 13.
- Allows mental communication; Golden Cicada can perceive Heavenly Insect’s thoughts 12 36.
- Transfers origin energy that strengthens Heavenly Insect’s blood, flesh, bones, organs, and physical defenses 13.
- Supplies golden power that Heavenly Insect draws upon during his evenly matched battle with Tian Fu 33.
- Binds their survival together: if either dies, the other dies as well 12.
Golden Cicada Rebirth Art
Golden Cicada teaches Heavenly Insect a top-tier cultivation art that resolves his energy-integration problem while tempering his body 36.
- Requires the silkworm’s origin energy to have fused with the practitioner’s bloodline 36.
- Converts spiritual energy into a sharp, domineering golden form and circulates it along routes resembling a golden cicada 36.
- Causes the body to shed an outer shell with each completed revolution, strengthening it and doubling its defense 36.
- Can produce a body comparable to a divine artifact after nine revolutions 36.
- Consumes enormous amounts of spiritual energy; Heavenly Insect doubts his entire supply of supreme spirit liquid could complete the second cycle 41.
Parasitic Growth and Vulnerabilities
Species records distinguish the silkworm’s apparent benefits from the predatory purpose behind them 5.
- Lives in a host’s heart and feeds on heart’s blood, improving aptitude and spiritual-energy absorption to increase its own nourishment 5.
- Drains a host’s life force if their growth slows or reaches a bottleneck 5.
- Uses its host as protection and nourishment during cocooned evolution 5.
- Becomes extremely fragile when cocooned; failure to emerge can destroy a thousand years of effort 5 12.
- Its evolved form is reputed to resist weapons, water, fire, and spiritual arts, but those defenses should not be confused with its current cocooned condition 5 11.
Relationships
- Heavenly Insect — Life-bound partner, protector, and resource supplier. Their frequent disputes center on food, energy shares, and his promise to accelerate its emergence; their established division is fifty-fifty 12 13 14 35.
- Nine Revolutions Black-Whiskered Mosquito — Detects the sealed insect and refines its crystalline prison, making it available for Heavenly Insect’s use while extracting energy from the seal 18 21 29.
