Hao Jingye couldn't understand it.
Qiu Yu and Sheng An were "colleagues," but they were also "rivals," especially since their respective superiors wanted them to outdo each other and take full control of the Doomsday Special Affairs Office.
The Special Affairs Office might not have many people yet, but it was tremendously important—the future hub of all Superpower Persons.
And the importance of Superpower Persons in the apocalypse went without saying.
Both women were currently in charge. They had to cooperate, but they also had to compete.
Why had Qiu Yu gone out looking for Aberrants, keeping herself so busy she hadn't even come back?
Wasn't it because Sheng An had taken Qi Lingwu, leaving her with an overwhelming sense of crisis?
Now that Qiu Yu had returned with an Aberrant, this was a crucial moment. Whether for the sake of the Special Affairs Office or because of her relationship with Qiu Yu, Sheng An ought to go find out a little more.
How could she not be curious?!
Hao Jingye's eyes went wide, his glasses perched low on his nose and his expression a complicated mix of emotions.
Sheng An, however, was relaxed and unbothered.
If Qiu Yu had returned now, she must have an important card in her hand and be waiting to show it off. Why should Sheng An go watch her put on a performance?
As for what exactly an Aberrant was?
She wasn't worried. Qiu Yu would definitely bring one right to her.
Why bother investigating it herself?
Sheng An finished the work in front of her and stood up.
Hao Jingye, who had been distracted the entire time, immediately stood with her, his eyes lighting up. "Are we going to take a look?"
Sheng An said, "No. It's time to eat."
With that, she strode toward the cafeteria.
Hao Jingye: "..."
When the two of them entered the cafeteria, Jiang Yu and Li Xin arrived as well.
They came from different directions, but both looked like ghosts on the verge of death, drifting over with their heads hanging.
Jiang Yu's eyes lit up when she saw Sheng An, and she hurried over.
Li Xin gritted his teeth and came over too, looking resentful.
Sheng An asked curiously, "What happened? Got scolded again?"
Jiang Yu nodded miserably. "Yeah... I forgot most of what I learned yesterday and ruined a few plants with my shovel. Old Zhou practically scolded me to death..."
Sheng An patted her head and comforted her. "Be good and pay more attention next time. You're the only one who can enter your space, so you need to master all these planting techniques."
Jiang Yu: "..."
Ah, another day of wanting to reveal my cheat.
Li Xin leaned in, grumbling, "Hurry up and get rid of those teachers. They're awful! They actually called me stupid, when I haven't even complained that they don't know how to teach. They're just a bunch of researchers. How could they compare to Superpower Persons in the apocalypse—"
Sheng An looked behind Li Xin, her face expressionless and her voice calm. "Uncle Song, you're here."
Li Xin instantly clutched his head and wailed, "Grandpa, Grandma, I was wrong! I won't do it again!"
There was not a sound behind him.
Li Xin froze, then cautiously lifted his head, only to notice Jiang Yu stifling a laugh.
He whipped around. There was no one there.
Li Xin erupted. "Sheng An!!"
Sheng An smacked him on the head and smiled faintly.
"If you say anything like that again, I'll tell your grandparents and parents. I'll ask whether they're all less worthy than a Superpower Person like you."
"You actually told on me?!" Li Xin's eyes went wide.
"Not only will I tell on you, I'll do it over and over." Sheng An kept smiling.
Li Xin swallowed his anger, clutching his head and gritting his teeth so hard they ground together.
She's awful.
This she-devil is absolutely awful!
From woman, to Female Villain, to she-devil—the progression perfectly reflected Li Xin's attitude toward Sheng An.
Sheng An held Jiang Yu with one hand and dragged Li Xin with the other.
"Come on, let's go eat. You're wasting so much time. Do you think your lunch break is too long?"
Jiang Yu hurriedly waved her hands. "No, absolutely not! Our lunch break isn't long at all. It's too short!"
She meant every word.
Their lunch break really was too short. They only had time to eat, not even enough to rest for a moment.
Li Xin was even more indignant. "With this little time, it's worse than senior year of high school! That awful teacher actually wanted me to eat in the classroom. Absolutely vile!"
Jiang Yu nodded vigorously. "Exactly! Old Zhou said that too. Please, no."
This was their only little bit of freedom. If even that got taken away, how could they survive?
Sheng An spread her hands. "Fine. I'll have a word with them. You can keep coming to the cafeteria for every meal."
Pushing people too hard could cause problems too.
She still had to give them a little breathing room now and then.
Jiang Yu's eyes lit up, and she excitedly hugged Sheng An's arm. "Ahhh, thank you, Sister Sheng!"
Even Li Xin felt a little touched despite himself.
Maybe this woman isn't so bad after all?
Behind them, Hao Jingye: "??"
PTSD?
Have you two forgotten who the real culprit is?
The four members of Group B ate together.
Their lunches were already prepared. When they reached the entrance, the kitchen staff began bringing out dishes and tea, setting everything on the table.
They even put out little name cards.
The food steamed as though it had just come off the stove.
Jiang Yu's lunch was as lavish as ever.
Sheng An and Hao Jingye each had their own preferences, and their meals were tailored to their tastes.
Only Li Xin had a sparse, plain meal in front of him.
Li Xin was baffled.
He looked at Jiang Yu's feast, then at his own meal, and finally at Sheng An, gritting his teeth. "What's going on? Give me an explanation!"
Hao Jingye said, "The Academy of Sciences planned this meal for you. They want to examine how different diets affect your current body."
Li Xin: "?"
So now they're even controlling what I eat?!
Just as Li Xin was about to explode, Sheng An picked up her chopsticks and casually said between bites, "Three months."
Li Xin: "..."
His hackles settled back down. He lowered his head resentfully and started eating.
Huh?
This is actually pretty good?
Despite how plain it was, the food really did taste good.
Li Xin began eating faster. Beside him, Jiang Yu was equally focused on her meal.
They couldn't help it. They were exhausted and starving.
The cafeteria fell silent.
But soon, a series of footsteps rang out.
This cafeteria was for Special Affairs Office members. Normally, they were the only ones who came in.
At the sudden footsteps, everyone except Sheng An looked up, then appeared puzzled.
Seven people walked in.
At their head was a young woman, a little shorter than Sheng An and with an even colder expression. She wore casual clothes, but her appearance was carefully put together, unlike Sheng An, who simply threw on a Combat Jacket before heading out.
She had delicate features and was a beauty of an entirely different type from Sheng An.
As she entered with six people behind her, she cut an imposing figure.
Jiang Yu and Li Xin both watched them.
Sheng An calmly kept eating, without so much as a second glance.
Hao Jingye followed Sheng An's lead, withdrawing his gaze and focusing on his food.
Jiang Yu gave Hao Jingye a questioning look.
Hao Jingye silently mouthed, "Qiu Yu."
Jiang Yu: "!!"
She already knew about the situation in the Special Affairs Office. At this, she immediately looked away and focused on eating.
At the same time, she made sure to tug on Li Xin.
Li Xin looked utterly bewildered.
The group walked over beside them. Qiu Yu stopped, and everyone behind her stopped as well. They clearly followed her lead without question.
Qiu Yu swept her gaze over the four of them and sneered. "Well, if it isn't Team Leader Sheng. Finally got yourself two team members?"
She stressed the word "two."
Behind her, on the other hand, stood a full six people. The contrast was stark.
It was as though their sheer presence could overwhelm Sheng An and her group.
