The prison cells were divided among countless little gangs.
Little White Tiger and his brothers had a cell in the sunniest spot on the second floor of the cell block, the only room on the entire floor that occasionally got some sunlight.
That alone showed the strength of this gang of teenage boys.
"Boss... there's something else..."
His underlings looked at one another.
After hesitating for a while, they reported in hushed voices, "Little Jun came to visit yesterday. Old Xie said you'd embezzled company money. The brothers wouldn't stand for it and went to confront him, but Old Xie played dirty. San-San is dead, Little Five is crippled, and Brother Nine got hurt too."
The brothers finished quietly and looked at Little White Tiger in fear.
First, Old Xie had gotten Little White Tiger thrown into prison. Then he had gone after Little White Tiger's brothers.
Old Xie was afraid Little White Tiger would retaliate, so he intended to wipe out his crew completely.
"What's the story with this Old Yang?" Little White Tiger sat up straight again.
If he wanted to get out and take revenge, he first had to stay alive.
Old Xie had sent him to this death prison to have someone else do the killing. The immediate priority was dealing with the threats inside.
"Before you even came in, they said you wouldn't last three days. Old Yang runs the fifth floor of the cell block. He's got over forty men."
"Brother Tiger, it's not just Old Yang. Every boss in the prison has said they're going to kill you."
The brothers looked at Little White Tiger, their faces full of worry.
The corners of his mouth lifted slightly. "Then we'll kill until they're scared."
Early morning.
The sky was still a murky gray. That was how the climate was during this little ice age.
With temperatures more than ten degrees below freezing, sleeping on an iron-framed bed could get a man frozen to death if he wasn't careful.
Old Yang had finally made it through the night. Only when the temperature rose a little that morning had he drifted off, holding his "girlfriend."
"Get up. Time for breakfast."
A low voice sounded beside Old Yang's ear.
Then a figure sat down on his bed.
"Who..."
Old Yang jolted upright and stared in shock at the boy sitting on his bed.
The prison used inmates to manage other inmates, so Old Yang held the keys to every cell on the fifth floor.
His other underlings were still locked in their cells, unable to get out.
Wearing Old Yang's padded coat, Little White Tiger held a toothbrush sharpened to a gleaming point and stared coldly at him.
"You..."
Old Yang looked in horror at the underlings who shared his cell. Someone had sneaked in, yet not one of them had warned him.
His five cellmates knelt on the floor in thin clothes, shivering, each with a sharp weapon held against his neck.
"I don't like people coming after me. Since you want to take me out, you can't complain if I kill you, right?"
Little White Tiger glanced at the long-haired inmate in Old Yang's arms, who burrowed under the quilt in terror.
"What do you want?"
Old Yang asked, forcing himself to stay calm.
"You've been in prison too long. You think you're fit to play games with me? I'm making an example of you today, so every fucking nobody out there stops thinking they can come after me."
Prison was a place where the strong devoured the weak. To keep others from killing him, he had to show them what he could do.
If Little White Tiger killed Old Yang, the other bosses would have to think twice before making a move.
Old Yang's face went livid, and his hand began feeling around beneath the quilt for a weapon.
Thwack!
Little White Tiger drove the toothbrush straight through Old Yang's palm, piercing the bedboard beneath it.
Old Yang grunted, his body trembling, then forced himself not to make another sound.
He refused to lose face in front of a youngster like Little White Tiger.
"How the fuck did you get in?"
Old Yang panted heavily as blood stained the quilt red.
"Forgot what we used to do? You think picking a lock is hard?"
Old Yang softened his tone. He was afraid of dying too. "Brother, we've had our fight. Now we can be friends. Your boss put a bounty on you, and I'm not the only one who took it. Every big shot in this prison wants to kill you and collect."
Little White Tiger's gaze turned icy. He had risked his life for Old Xie, only for Old Xie to repay him by trying to wipe him out completely.
He had already been sentenced to death, yet Old Xie still couldn't rest easy.
"I want out."
"Brother, aren't you asking too much of me?" Old Yang's face twisted as he cursed through his trembling. "If I had a way out, I'd have left long ago! Would I still be freezing my ass off here?"
"Who else wants to kill me?" Little White Tiger settled for the next best thing, baring his teeth in a grin.
"Can I keep that to myself?"
Old Yang knew the prison's rules. Selling out the others wouldn't end well for him either.
Little White Tiger nodded solemnly. "You can."
"We're all men of the streets. You have your rules, and I won't force you. But I have my rules too."
Little White Tiger dropped his cigarette butt and looked toward the corner.
The seven or eight young brothers standing there took his cue and grabbed Old Yang's kneeling underlings.
As though slaughtering chickens, they mercilessly drove their toothbrushes and sharpened wooden sticks into the men's necks.
Squelch, squelch.
A series of muffled sounds followed.
A dozen seconds later, five corpses lay limp on the floor.
Blood had splattered all over the room.
These five men were Old Yang's core underlings. Little White Tiger had done this to establish his authority.
After all, there was a considerable gap between the two sides' strength.
He had to intimidate every inmate on the fifth floor.
"Well, old-timer? Do you submit?"
"..." Old Yang glared furiously at Little White Tiger.
"Fuck!"
A young underling with a buzz cut stood behind Little White Tiger. He thrust a hollow, sharpened bamboo tube into Old Yang's thigh.
"My boss is talking to you. Are you fucking mute?"
"I submit! I fucking submit!"
This time, Old Yang gave in completely.
Little White Tiger's ruthlessness had gone beyond anything Old Yang had expected.
Who could have imagined that, with enemies on every side, Little White Tiger would still dare strike him first?
After this, Little White Tiger had thoroughly cowed the inmates of the entire fifth floor.
"Brother, I'll stay out of your business with Madman Yang, all right?" Old Yang clutched his wound and begged in agony.
Little White Tiger slowly rose, mockery in his eyes.
"If you touch me, the other bosses in this prison won't let you get away with it."
Seeing the killing intent in Little White Tiger's eyes, Old Yang hurriedly tried to dissuade him.
"Old-timer, I grew up in a garbage dump. I learned as a kid that if you don't want to be bullied, you have to make people fear you. Go in peace."
Little White Tiger stepped aside. The buzz-cut underling yanked up the thin quilt and threw it over Old Yang's head.
Seven or eight young men swarmed him, grabbing their weapons and stabbing them into Old Yang.
"You can't kill me! I'm one of Mr. Li's men!"
"I don't care whose man you are. Today, I need to borrow your head." Little White Tiger silently lit three cigarettes and set them beside Old Yang's bed. "I need to kill one to warn a hundred, and you walked right into the line of fire. Safe travels, old-timer."
Old Yang's eyes widened. The quilt was already soaked red with blood.
Even as he died, he had never imagined Little White Tiger would truly dare to kill him.
"You... Mr. Li will avenge me... this whole... prison belongs to him. You're dead."
